wendroid··on Stop Piping Cats
You get mostly both with

    xargs foo < file | grep bar | sort | wc -l

zsh and rc provide primitives for this, this is rc

    diff <{ps} <{sleep 3; ps}

wendroid··on Anonymous hacks Australian Government in response to Internet censorship
Can you name the US Anonymous member that was imprisoned for a year and fined $37,500 for DDoS ing the Scientology website ?

>It would be like punching mist.

Ask Dmitriy Guzner his opinion on that, though you'll have to wait until he's released from prison. You might help him with his $37,500 fine too.

wendroid··on XHP: A New Way to Write PHP (from Facebook)
It's turd polish, that doesn't make anything shiny.

If your code looks anything like that, or the examples on the Facebook page, you're doing it wrong.

I think the paradigm you're looking for is CSP

wendroid··on Perceived Risk for hash collisions in deduping filesystems
You don't need NFS to run a de-deuping file system. PLan9's Venti has been ported to unix based user mode plan9

http://swtch.com/plan9port/man/man8/venti.html

I use it as a generale backup mechanism. I can save file systems from inside Qemu to it, from Inferno running on Windows, Linux stuff and I can write to it over the net (though it is in the clear so tunnel it).

http://maht0x0r.blogspot.com/2010/01/venti-on-linux-via-p9p....

You configure it so it will spit out certain sized data arenas suitable for burning to CD / DVD as the data is write once anyway.

wendroid··on Ask HN: What's the deal with Common Lisp?
Forth is in the same boat, no-one is going to make C based Plan9 libs for it. The one I use 4th only has file ops anyway so I plan9 to do something with it but it is the perennial todo list problem :)
wendroid··on Ask HN: What's the deal with Common Lisp?
I don't know mcuh about LISP. But what I know about OSes means I know the advantage of Everything is a File.

On Plan9 if you can open / read / write / close / remove you can do almost anything : networking, graphics, serial, debugging, mouse control, the list extends by design.

We have a few Schemes ported for those who had a personal itch. ALISP claimes a port but their site is down for me.

wendroid··on Windows is so irrelevant
Indeed. And while OSX might have a BSD heritage the command line isn't exactly where it's at with OSX.

Strikes me as being written by someone that does more reading than building.

wendroid··on Slowdown in Warming Tied to Less Water Vapor
> Those skeptical of man-made global warming say the temperature anomaly supports their case. Others say it is merely a blip, and that warming remains the long-term trend.

Are they the only two options? What about "natural systems will adapt reducing the likelihood of runaway AGW though more vegetation and increased water vapour"

wendroid··on Miguel de Icaza: "As a software developer, I find the iPad inspirational."
Does this sound like thumbing one's nose ?

In the Summer of 1997 my friend Randy Chapman invited me to interview at the Microsoft Internet Explorer for Solaris on the SPARC (because of my background in the Linux/SPARC port). I went to interview to Microsoft that summer and met both Randy Chapman and Nat Friedman for the first time in person. We had known for a long time from the LinuxNet IRC network.

At Microsoft I learned the truth about ActiveX and COM and I got very interested in it inmediately. Upon my return to Mexico Federico and I started to design a GUI control infrastructure for Unix that we code named `GNOME'.

Indeed, because they do work quite well. I have a CD case sized panel and I charge my phone with it in normal daylight. It pumps out about 500ma in bright sun so takes about 2 hours to charge my G1. wendroid··on Ask HN: A competitor stole my iPhone app content — what should I do?
Mor elike the oppsoite. Ireland is the whole island and Eire is the Republic of Ireland. It also depends on one's politics. Londonderry or Derry ? My t-shirt says "People's Republic of Derry", though round here it gets mis-read as "People's Republic of Derby" which is a neighbouring city!

wendroid··on Ask HN: A competitor stole my iPhone app content — what should I do?
Being technically correct is all I hope for. As an Englishman I always write Eire but say Ireland.
