wendroid··on POSIX IO Must Die
Why is the speed of stat a POSIX issue ? I don't see anything in there that warrants changing the semantics of open() read() write() seek() stat() and close(). I don't see how it is any business of POSIX to mandate meta-data caching.

I' m not signing up to post there but just so you know: Association Football doesn't have "rules", they are adjudicated by an "umpire". Soccer has a "referee" ipso facto it has "laws".

wendroid··on Ask HN: What are you working on tonight?
Working on our backup path. I run some Limbo[1] code using Windows Scheduled Tasks. This copies the contents of My Documents and Desktop (or wherever) to a Venti[2] server running on Linux on the LAN. The storage arenas of that server are extracted in 500Mb chunks and encrypted, along with the scores for accessing them, using GPG[3]. These are then copied offsite, via the internet and bundled into DVD sized groups and burned to optical when appropriate. As Venti arenas are append only this is minimum transfer, secure backup. That's obviously just the Windows machiens that use Limbo. Unix likes have native clients. Our Venti store also contains data from other soruces such as the website and imap servers. Though it might make sense to separate them out, that's the decisions I'm working on as I go along.

I would also like to find an encryption method that uses fixed size chunks so I can upload only the appended data. That's something I need to look more into. I know they are around somewhere.

What is mildly amusing is that Gnash has had H.264 HW acceleration available for months.

wendroid··on DRM from hell.
50kbps about 6Kb per second, 22Mb per hour

On a TWC 5Gb cap line for $30 per month thats 232 Hours playing time per month (8 hours per day) if you do no other downloading.

What if you had 3 people in your house all wanting to play games DRMd like this ? You'd have to upgrade your connection just to play games you already paid for.

wendroid··on DRM from hell.
hehe you think you get >= 50kbps without ever going under for more than a few seconds ? I guess you've never been on dial up
wendroid··on DRM from hell.
50kbps - good luck if you're on GPRS. What about dial-up, some people still use that don't they ?

wendroid··on Why I'm an ebook convert
Good for Charlie. I love my Sony PRS500. Ok no wifi or fancy (it does play mp3s!), but it was $150 for ebay, so when I driopped it and a bit of the case broke I just stuck some duct tape on it and didn't care.

I've filled it with stuff from Gutenburg, stuff you can't even buy if you wanted to. It'll be a long time before I've read my way through the free stuff. And by then I'll be able to bay a fancy one.

I would say that specifying that warming 1860-1880 'not statistically significantly different' to 1995-2009 is quite an admission. Not the same as "No global warming" but not exactly evidence of runaway AGW.

wendroid··on How secure is your password? [Graphic]
I so don't get why people are not encouraged to use pass phrases rather than single words as they are both easy to remember and long.

Take the example weak password "iloveu" if you changed that to "i love beer" or "i love big cocks" you rocket from weak to strong. You can even work the name of the site in there "i love facebook" or "i love hacker news".

The concern is about a) false positives, b) what happens on non-internet connected machines inside secure facilities e.g. nuclear power stations, banks, police stations, hospitals &c. &c.

So the only victims will ever be valid paying customers.
