wendroid··on Spreadsheet of the glycemic indices of 4,000 foods as measured by the NCI [xls]
> - meal GI can be lowered by simply consuming more protein/fat based foods, or high grain foods alongside the food.

I'm not refuting your GI point but the combination of foods does have an impact on how they are digested. E.g. want to fatten a cow? Give it plenty of water with its food.

Other combinations such as wholemeal bread & fats are better than fats without wholemeal.

Denatured flour will re-absorb vitamins & minerals from the other foods on the plate.

I'm not advocating the Shang-ri-la but http://www.sethroberts.net/ has some good reading on the subject, particularly "What Makes Food Fattening? A Pavlovian Theory of Weight Control" - http://www.sethroberts.net/about/whatmakesfoodfattening.pdf

wendroid··on Ask HN: Any health tips?
Get to bed by midnight & get up when you wake (no alarm clock).

Only eat wholemeal wheat.

Eat plenty of greens - broccoli, kale, savoy cabbage (high iron stuff)

Eat an apple on your way to the office.

Coffee only before mid-day

wendroid··on MPI-Mapreduce
The sad thing about MPI is that it's entrenched. To run it on the biggest iron such as Blue Gene they have to use a mechanism called OS Bypass to get the bytes on the wire fast enough because the Linux kernel takes an age. One of the other teams in Sandia work on alternatives to running Linux; see their use of Plan 9 in "Using Currying and process-private system calls to break the one-microsecond system call barrier, Ronald G. Minnich, John Floren, Jim Mckie" - http://iwp9.org/slides/usecsys.pdf

However, obviously the actual users want to maintain their investment in their MPI based Fortran software so it's one of those situations where merely matching the current systems is not enough unless you can demonstrate heaps of potential.

This is my favourite from 1992 :

http://docs.google.com/viewer?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ulb.tu-da...

His is spot on though, but we need to get the vector unit as standard on the MB, not some add-on card. Larabee talks good graphics talk but the real gift should just be the vector FPU made available to the OS.

SSEx processes 128bits in one operation which can represent 2 x 64bit doubles or 4 x 32bit floats or 8 x dwords or 16 bytes, which I thought was me reading it wrong, they call it SIMD and let you have 2 64bit data points which I suppose is technically true :) I was expecting something spectacular like 128.

wendroid··on Is H.264 a legal minefield for video pros?
That's not the scariest part for Pros

Here's the EULA for our PRO camera :

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=584693&l=d37e6ecc2...

That's right, a MPEG2 camera that can't be used for anything but home movies without paying MPEG-LA more money.

And when you pay them for using your own camera, you find that you have to pay again to import MPEG2 into Final Cut

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=584692&l=a8a46fa56...

And according to MPEG-LA encoders & distributors must pay, so by using your camera you are exposing the venus you show it in to royaslty payments to MPEG-LA.

Want to know how much that'll cost :

http://www.mpegla.com/main/programs/AVC/Documents/AVC_TermsS...

It's still cheaper than doing a Blu-Ray

wendroid··on New Camera Has Real-time Focus of Near and Far Field
> Supposedly the key to this is the fact that intensity is proportional to 1/distance^2, but just how they use this (given that different objects will be different in brightness) the article doesn't say.

I'd imagine something not far away from :

pixel(x, y) = max(intensity(x, y, ccds))

The IR distance system has been around for a while. Sony released a camera which recorded the distance per pixel too, they introduced it as an alternative to green screening, using the distance map as a matte. I can't find what that's called atm. and though I looked forward to using one, I've never come across one in my film work.

wendroid··on New Camera Has Real-time Focus of Near and Far Field
No it doesn't. It has an array of CCDs and chooses the appropriate pixel to capture at runtime based on inferred distance information so the headline should read :

"New Camera Simulates Real-time Focus of Near and Far Field"

Sounds like a fun piece of kit though personally I think in general, having all objects in the field of view in focus will be sensory overload and perhaps a little disturbing, similar to the dissonance created by the inverse - fake depth of field.

Nice one Cory, spot on mate. The shills like Sharkey and the tech-illilterate in parliament have F'd us in the A.

It makes me so mad. I can't wait for this Act to get some teeth, cos I'm going to punch them in. The last two times they made my life illegal I was pretty powerless to fight back but now they stepped into my ring, bring it the fuck on.

And no, I'm not a freetard either. I don't Torrent movies and the like, I produce them. Seeing the projects I work on on TPB is pretty galling but I would never ever give those fuckers more laws to beat us down with - remember Peterloo !!!

wendroid··on Plan 9 from User Space
My car doesn't have a stereo either.

Plan9 has three graphical web browsers but no, not CSS3 & JS. Russ doesn't even run a Plan9 terminal at all so he's not much of a benchmark.

If web browsing is what you use your computer for, then perhaps Plan9 is not for you.

Plan9 doesn't have anti-aliased fonts by default as it uses bitmap fonts. There are unofficial builds that use TTF fonts (I run one of those) and also some other NDA goodies. I think perhaps the TTF will migrate back into the main.

These people are really beginning to annoy me. They are under the impression that a few poxy songs are the most valuable things on earth. They had a fwe good years in the sunshine but now it is autumn in the land of sing a song for sixpence.

Your product has lost its value. Adapt or die.

I know it's a shock to wake up on morning without a steady income from the songs you sang a 10 years ago but tough, try doing something productive today.

And yes, I do know what it is like. I've had my lifestyle made illegal, TWICE.

You should try doing more than using Safari. Some of us even replace the command line on OSX to be something more friendly (Plan9port). The number of times I've dropped to the shell to find the contents of a resource fork for colleagues using "find" is > 0.
