websites2323··on All-new iMac features the M1 chip
>I guess I need to buy yet more dongles, or throw them away and replace everything with USB-C peripherals because some 20yo on HN says that USB-A is legacy.

The concern about dongles is so overblown. Let's take your examples each in turn.

>Suppose I have a nice USB-A optical mouse

You buy a USB-C to USB-A adapter and it lives on the mouse's USB-A connector, never being taken off, forever. And then... it's one piece. Are you taking the mouse with you? The dongle comes with it. You don't gotta think about it.

>mechanical keyboard

Same deal. Lots of keyboards even have USB-A ports on them -- which means you only need 1 dongle. One for the keyboard. That lives on the end of the USB-A connector. You have now converted your legacy USB-A device to USB-C and can forget about it forever, for the cost of $5 from Monoprice.

>a really nice $200 audio interface

If you really, for some reason just cannot stand to add a $5 add-on piece to get the latest gear from Apple, many of these devices have detactable cables. So, you can just.. buy a different cable. Let's take the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, which matches your use case at $200. A replacement cable from MonoPrice is... $5.29. And you can put away the old cable and just... have this one.

At the very, very worst case, you're talking about a $1200 machine and an additional cash outlay of approximately $15. For adapters which attach to the thing you want to use, forever, and don't have to be thought of again.

And somehow this is a travesty against the user? Worth of a scrap-and-redesign of the $1200+ machine?

All mac computers except the Mac Mini come with a keyboard and mouse. The Mac Mini 2 USB-A ports, which would be suitable for the keyboard and mouse with USB-A.

I think you’re a holdout for the pro version. This one is only 24” anyway.
websites2323··on All-new iMac features the M1 chip
I’m going to go ahead and say if you haven’t gotten onboard with USB C by now you’re behind. It’s been half a decade since the USB A port went away on Mac. I know everyone has their legacy peripherals they love but... it’s time to move on.

Yes. This is the case. And the versions that come with Ethernet have the Ethernet port on that brick.

websites2323··on Two people killed in fiery Tesla crash with no one driving
From Elon Musk on Twitter:

* Data logs recovered so far show Autopilot was not enabled & this car did not purchase FSD.

* Moreover, standard Autopilot would require lane lines to turn on, which this street did not have.

> So they could have held the steering wheel from the passanger seat.

We don’t have the diagnostic information that indicates AP was engaged. So, which is more likely: driver error and no seatbelt, or driver sitting in the passenger seat? I contend the latter is extremely unlikely, since there would be basically no benefit to doing this given the requirements of AP currently.

It’s possible the driver was pulling a stunt. In which case, the deaths are attributable to deliberate misuse, no different than “ghost riding the whip”

websites2323··on Two people killed in fiery Tesla crash with no one driving
Something in this story doesn’t add up. There is no implementation of AutoPilot on Tesla cars that doesn’t require intervention by the driver every 15 seconds. Perhaps the driver undid their seat belt and reached behind to get something and was then thrown from his seat elsewhere?

Because Facebook, along with Google, are modern day Robber Barons of Surveillance Capitalism. They monitor behavior and use that information to target ads.

Sure, cereal companies know that big boxes with cute characters at kid-height sells sugar pops. But Facebook knows every like, every friend request, every post, every message... check-ins at businesses. They combine the social anxiety of adolescence with advertising. It’s sick. Adults are easily manipulated. Children even more so.

And when you bring up those other advertisement pathways: they’re manipulative too!

websites2323··on Estate agent's hi-tech house tour exposes personal data
There’s a weird thing where home sellers are encouraged to be mindful of who they sell to. For example, in hot markets, couples buying a single family home are directed by their agent to send a photo of themselves and a letter talking about how much they want to be a part of the community, why that house is perfect, etc. I’ve never done this, primarily because I suspect we’d open ourselves to discrimination, but it’s a thing.
websites2323··on Iran Says It Will Enrich Uranium to 60%
US goal: Nuclear containment in Central Asia that threaten Israel. Iran goal: reversal of sanctions that cripple the economy.

US has no incentive to lift sanctions if Iran complies with sanctions in place. In a world where a bankrupt Iran abandons enrichment, Israel is not threatened.

I am not sure why you think this discussion about homosexuals in general and the possibility that they would attracted to trans men impacts you personally. The idea doesn’t hurt you. It’s just an idea.
websites2323··on You can't censor away extremism or any other problem
These ideas don’t point towards any animosity towards homosexuals, just a theory about how they might be attracted to trans people. Not really comparable to conversion therapy — no one is forcing you to date a trans man.

Always always always challenge it. In the American medical system is that the first bill is a first position. Expect to negotiate down, even with insurance, by at least 20%.

It’s time consuming, and confusing, and people will fob you off. But it’s necessary unless you want to get taken for a ride.

We haven’t totally lost the ability to have a civil discussion, we’ve just for some reason raised the stakes to mean that we should be able to have a civil discussion in a forum of hundreds of people, behind screens. Civil discussion exists plenty in smaller forums, like group chats and discords and slacks where people care about being civil.

Google Voice numbers are cheap. If SMS is the only barrier to verifying and they don’t block it, could be easy to circumvent.

But then again, this and every other technical “solution” to this problem presented here (piracy, etc) is far beyond what a normal user could be bothered to implement.

I get it. Business team needs to see an upward trend in account sign ups and they’re seeing a plateau. This move will get the normal users legitimized and it will delay a bigger increase in cost for a year or two.

websites2323··on Digital-only artwork fetches nearly $70M at Christie's
I guess I’m trying to figure out how rich people brag about their wealth. They can’t put this in a museum(?) and hanging it on your wall in your dining room isn’t particularly impressive either.

I suppose there’s lots of art just sitting in storage because it’s an investment medium, and this isn’t different?

Stupid question time. Apologies in advance. Could the buyer print it out and put it on their wall?
websites2323··on T-Mobile to share customers' data with advertisers unless they opt out
‘Although the saying tells us “If it’s free, then you are the product,” that is also incorrect. We are the sources of surveillance capitalism’s crucial surplus: the objects of a technologically advanced “and increasingly inescapable raw-material-extraction operation. Surveillance capitalism’s actual customers are the enterprises that trade in its markets for future behavior.’

Excerpt From The Age of Surveillance Capitalism Shoshana Zuboff

I don’t have any background is psychology. This information you provided increases my skepticism of ADHD as being a thing at all. In short, I’ve felt since becoming an adult that ADHD is simply the result of forcing people into situations that are poorly suited to their brains, implemented by people who happened to fair well in those situations. That is, the humans themselves aren’t broken, just a different neuro-variant.

websites2323··on T-Mobile auto opting in customer to targeted ads and selling data
We need to go stronger. "T-Mobile to begin selling customers' data without permission."

If I knew all of your behavior and then relayed that strangers so they could gaslight you into doing what they wanted, "you never told me not to share that information" would not be an excuse you accept.

The default should always be opt-in, not opt-out.
