The state doesn’t discourage it, they promote it. That’s the problem. Gambling is entertainment for people who don’t understand statistics. It’s a tax on the poor.
websites2323··on Please support Web Monetization if you want less ads on the web
Patreon is the real innovation, not web monetization. I spend more than $300/month on patreon, and there is room in my budget for more.

Interesting. It seems to be a similar story in multiple states. I oppose state funded gambling, and this is one reason.
websites2323··on China’s Bitcoin miners flee Inner Mongolia ahead of crypto mining ban
This thread is full of conflicting logic. For example:

“No one has the moral authority to tell you what is a good or bad use of energy” followed by “Bitcoin uses less energy than than banking and the military,” implying that these are “bad” uses of energy — and in fact, that’s the entire foundation of the Bitcoin cult! That Bitcoin is better than Fiat, that it’s the righteous currency because of decentralization/etc. When you have God on your side (in this case, Satoshi, someone revered despite having never been revealed as existing...) you can justify anything. Even massive energy waste and pollution.

websites2323··on China’s Bitcoin miners flee Inner Mongolia ahead of crypto mining ban
Hi, I oppose bitcoin and have lots to say about the sheer waste and pollution that most of us take part in.

I also put my money where my mouth is! I drive electric and charge only at my employer, which uses 100% solar. I don’t eat meat. I shop at package free groceries. I eat as much local food as possible. I don’t stream movies or music.

We exist, my friend, but that’s besides the point. There are no saints in systems as complex as energy. You can only take aim at the big stuff and hope you can make an impact.

Bitcoin is entirely unnecessary, unlike eating and driving. Participating is a choice. And it’s a bad choice.

Your occupation is terrible for the environment and there’s no sleight of hand with localized power sources that will change that.

All these dreams of decentralized money will be worth nothing when global warming and the associated chaos kick in.

websites2323··on Tim Wu Explains Why He Thinks Facebook Should Be Broken Up (2019)
Even better is “The Attention Merchants.” Pair that with Zuboff’s “The Age of Surveillance Capitalism” and you’ll have a good foundation for how dangerous Facebook is. Something needs to be done. Monopoly is a means to an end here, but it might not get the job done. What need is a ban on behavioral advertising full stop.
websites2323··on Banned Seuss
I’m not sure why the Suess company couldn’t do what the makers of old cartoons did on Disney+. There’s a title card warning on old cartoons that say they are a product of their time, cultural depictions are not accurate, etc.

It would be fairly simple to do this for new editions of the books. Print up front the precise images which are sensitive, and talk about what they would look like today or why they wouldn’t be included at all.

websites2323··on Banned Seuss
This is a good example of why copyright ought to be life of the author, full stop. Yes, it’s wrong to force the Seuss company to publish what they don’t want to publish, but it’s equally wrong for corporations to hold hostage cultural artifacts for profit well beyond the time in which the original author could possibly benefit from it.
websites2323··on Zshelf: Z-Library books downloader for reMarkable tablet
Similar to your use case #2, I use Z-Library (and others) to get DRM-free versions of books I bought on Apple Books. Reason being: I can't trust that Apple won't go ebook-bankrupt like Microsoft did a few years back.
websites2323··on NIH will invest $1B to investigate 'long Covid'
>How many people know that pneumonia can increase the risk of heart attack?

To amplify your point, I didn't know this until my father died last month from a series of heart attacks brought on by pneumonia, which itself was caused by COVID.

Side note: the cause of death is listed as a heart attack. How many deaths are we not counting because COVID was not the direct cause?

websites2323··on US policymakers lose faith in official unemployment rate
If I understand this correctly, we are long overdue for this change, since it was reported way back in October 2019 [0] that wages, despite low unemployment, hadn't increased.

I suspect that politicians have been hesitant to poke the bear on unemployment numbers since the top-line has been so low that they could claim victory, but we are now reaching a point where the signals are so far divorced from the reality that they have no choice but to integrate something else to bring it more in line.

websites2323··on US policymakers lose faith in official unemployment rate
This has always been the case, though. The top-line unemployment rate does not, and has not ever included people who aren't looking for work. So why is Jay Powell just now losing faith in it? Why was it ok to make economic policy based on this narrow definition before?

Could it be because "not looking for work" was the result of more "natural" forces (disability, old age, etc) in years past?

websites2323··on Google-free /e/ OS is now selling preloaded phones in the US, starting at $380
I don’t want to do this. I want to buy one that is already done for me.

It’s great that it’s so easy. I’m happy that people enjoy doing it. I simply don’t want to.

websites2323··on Google-free /e/ OS is now selling preloaded phones in the US, starting at $380
I’m a time strapped, privacy concerned smartphone normie who would love to find a good alternative to Apple / Google to recommend to friends. I use three apps: messaging, web browser, and camera. Seems like those apps are covered in this one.
websites2323··on Google-free /e/ OS is now selling preloaded phones in the US, starting at $380
I've flashed ROMs before. I don't get a kick out of it, and my hourly rate is more than $150. I'll probably buy one.
websites2323··on Spotify announces HiFi, a lossless streaming tier coming later this year
The difference will not be audible to most people because of the equipment and environment. Besides, audio has been mastered for 128kbps MP3, which most people prefer. So unless they are going to change the mastering, this is double worthless.

But I’m not in the habit of telling people how to spend their money. If they enjoy the music more because they paid more for it, no objections here. I’ve got plenty of wasteful hobbies myself.

websites2323··on Shadowbanning: The secret censoring by social media
I'm in favor of anything that makes advertisers waste money, since their entire endeavor is evil.
websites2323··on Before buying a NYT subscription, here's what it'll take to cancel it
While this solution has a certain emotional satisfaction, I do not wish to further the notion that service providers are owed any explanation whatsoever for my demand. If the terms of the contract I entered with the service provider permits me to cancel for no reason, it is to those terms I will abide.

Even with the system is a simple drop-down I always choose “other” and enter n/a in the comment box.

websites2323··on Before buying a NYT subscription, here's what it'll take to cancel it
Yes. Stick to the business at hand: this is who I am, this is how you can look me up in your system, this is what I want to do. Feedback doesn't help, they're not going to take your advice, don't waste your time.

For example: "Please tell us the reason for your call today?" Should be met with the answer, "Please cancel my subscription." "May I ask why you want to cancel?" "Please cancel my subscription." "Have you ever used reader mode?" "Please cancel my subscription."
