webmonkeyuk··on Show HN: just released our beta, please give us feedback
I wasn't sure what the product was. From the homepage I can see above the fold that it's "The human touch of your everyday sales. Inch is here to help you make and live more everyday." from that I'm still not sure what it is. Something for people in sales and some kind of productivity tool?

Scrolling down the page I get to see "Inch plays your tune. Inch completes your current workflow in the most natural, seamless and productive way. It is triggered by the way you work and gives back and asks for information right when you need it.". So generic, that still doesn't tell me what the product is or does.

Further down the page I can see that it links in with CRMs. So maybe some kind of productivity tool that's for sales people and links in with CRMs.

As a user by now I'd have given up as I still don't know what this thing is.

Scolling back to the top I clicked "About" to learn about the product. First I see some pictures of the team, definitely not something that's very important or warrants being the first item in the top level menu. Still nothing on this page tells me what the product is or what it does.

The "How it works" does give me some more info about what the app does. Pretty sure it is for sales people and it's not for me.

I'm not a marketing expert, just trying to give a narrative of how I experienced the site. I think you need some kind of clear message about what your product is and what the USP is so that users can (in the few valuable seconds that you have their attention) find out what you do and why it's so great.

webmonkeyuk··on EasyJet refuses to let columnist on board for sending critical tweet
> Easy Jet's T & C do not override EU regulation. If they don't get you there, reasonably timely, they owe you compensation; period.

Clearly :)

webmonkeyuk··on EasyJet refuses to let columnist on board for sending critical tweet
> hen services were not rendered as expected when the soldier mentioned in the article couldn't be on time...

Granted they weren't on time but EasyJet's T&Cs do say that they don't guarantee their schedule at all:

15.1.1 Without prejudice to any applicable passenger rights pursuant to any international or domestic laws, times shown in timetables, schedules or elsewhere are not guaranteed and form no part of the contract of carriage.

webmonkeyuk··on Wuala: Secure Cloud Storage
AeroFS only stores data on clients (unless you run your own team server) and I think it has the option to store it encrypted there but could be wrong.
webmonkeyuk··on Sydney tunnel water screen stop sign for oversized vehicles [video]
The Blackwall Tunnel in London has a something similar with heavy metal weights on chains. http://www.sabre-roads.org.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=...

These will make a fair mess of a vehicle, I saw them hitting a lorry once but are pretty attention grabbing.

The Blackwall Tunnel has different heights and widths for different lanes due to the tunnel profile which is why the restrictions are different in each lane in this photo.

webmonkeyuk··on Ever wondered how Netflix delivered their content? Open Connect
The hardware design page is particularly interesting. It's a system similar to the Backblaze Pod https://signup.netflix.com/openconnect/hardware
webmonkeyuk··on Security incident update
At least if someone tries cracking the passwords they won't have to bother with a dictionary based attack or short strings ;)
webmonkeyuk··on 4K gyro-stabilized aerial video of San Francisco
I particularly like the way that the Jet Ranger changes colour in the photos
webmonkeyuk··on Diamonds Are Bullshit
I think the author of the article is way off the mark. An engagement ring isn't any kind of a financial investment (unless you think the wedding's unlikely to happen and you want to sell the ring/diamond). It's a token of committment/love.
webmonkeyuk··on Using a Hosts File To Make The Internet Not Suck As Much
I think that most users will be a lot lazier and less informed than you
webmonkeyuk··on No more remote work at Yahoo
We all love a sensational post!

"Of course not, you’re going to be angry at such a callous edict, declared without your consultation" seems a bit out of place when the pull quote from Yahoo! reads: "If this impacts you, your management has already been in touch with next steps"

webmonkeyuk··on Using a Hosts File To Make The Internet Not Suck As Much
There are some really poor ideas in there like blocking the domains of affiliate marketing networks. That won't just block ads, it'll prevent you from clicking through from affiliate sites to vendors' websites.
webmonkeyuk··on BufferBox (YC S12) launches deal with transit system
OK - we have left luggage in large train stations but all bags are subject to security inspections. They have to go through a TSA body scan ;)
webmonkeyuk··on BufferBox (YC S12) launches deal with transit system
I don't think it relates to law, just common-sense after decades of terrorist attacks in London. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_terrorist_incidents_in_...

I'm guessing that the risks are far lower in the US

webmonkeyuk··on BufferBox (YC S12) launches deal with transit system
I wouldn't have thought this would have ever got of the ground with potential security issues. An underground station would be the perfect place to plant explosives. In London they don't even have rubbish (trash) bins in the stations.

Perhaps only pre-approved retailers can deliver to it. That system's still open to abuse though.

webmonkeyuk··on A Man Walks into a Bank
Off the back of this Hacker News post I went to see him perform yesterday evening here at the Edinburgh show.

It was a great and really animated show. I wish I'd just skimmed the FT article though as the first 10 mins were just going over that again!

webmonkeyuk··on Rural residents' DIY 1Gbps fibre project
This is a great initiative. I wonder if there are any plans to bridge sections with WiMax or similar and/or break out from 1G fibre to Copper GigE or wifi in population points to reduce the client-side install and equipment cost.

I reckon it'll just be a matter of time until the BBC start blocking traffic from IP ranges that look like VPS hosting companies.

webmonkeyuk··on London Olympic website T+C linking policy (sect 5) "no nasty links"
I'm not sure but suspect not. The Olympic Committee are very, very hot on usage of the olympic logo and the word "Olympics"
webmonkeyuk··on PHP is much better than what you think
Great post. The grammar in the post title has a bit to be desired though. "than what"?
