webmonkeyuk··on Does anyone integrate with their customers' DB directly?
This works in some situations but the OPs use case seems to suggest near real-time access to records that would only have recently been created. I'm unsure if CSV could work well here.
webmonkeyuk··on How FoundationDB works and why it works (2021)
I suspect:

- memcached if you don't need to persist the data

- Redis if you don't know whether you need to use Redis or FoundationDB

- FoundationDB if you learn that Redis doesn't do what you need

I don't mean this in any kind of a derogatory way but I suspect that if you need to ask then you probably don't need FDB.

The principle of keeping tech stacks boring and using well established components is less exciting as an Engineer but is usually the best choice.

What's the solution? k8s!

What's the problem? Anything!

Nigel Richards learnt the words from the French dictionary but can't speak French
webmonkeyuk··on Parler's home page is back online, but app still not in stores
It looks like the website is proxied via a DDoS protection company called DDOS-GUARD https://gwhois.org/190.115.31.151

It looks like the website is being served from an Ubuntu server running nginx/1.18.0 https://parler.com/404

webmonkeyuk··on The CPUs of Spacecraft Computers in Space
"A CPU for use in space must first be MIL-STD-883"

Is this just for NASA craft? Are there any regulations for private craft or international standards?

webmonkeyuk··on Travis CI is no longer providing CI minutes for open source projects
Speaking from experience: they're not even managing to service paying customers well.
webmonkeyuk··on Lefthook: Knock your team’s code back into shape
Having to wait 30 mins for a build to run sounds like the real issue here. How would you push out an an emergency release in a timely way for example?
webmonkeyuk··on Lefthook: Knock your team’s code back into shape
Serious question: why would I want to use this instead of tests as part of the CI process? Or would the use case be to use both but just get faster feedback from Lefthook?
webmonkeyuk··on Kraken, an Open Source Peer-to-Peer Docker Registry
I'm chuckling inside thinking about how many people go and install/use this versus how many people actually work at a scale that they need to use this.
webmonkeyuk··on Raspberry Pi Pet Detector Camera Using Python, TensorFlow, and Twilio [video]
Yes. The this is the alternate way of doing it with the RFID flaps if for some reason your pet doesn't have a chip or there are issues reading it. Cats can lose collars though, many have a release mechanism so that if the collar gets caught the cat doesn't get stuck forever too.

webmonkeyuk··on Why do pilots say “Roger that”?
Interesting. Thanks for sharing.

I've definitely heard affirm from pilots in the UK

webmonkeyuk··on Don't use Hadoop when your data isn't that big (2013)
There's a very similar argument in this article that's trended on HN a couple of times before: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=12472905

webmonkeyuk··on Reverse Engineering a Mysterious UDP Stream in My Hotel
Exactly the same at my university except the the phone in the lift would ring and have to be picked up by someone.

We'd wait until the lift was totally crammed with people, call it and then ask to speak to someone we knew was in the lift!

webmonkeyuk··on GitHub had connectivity problems
As you say - In English they would be referred to as plural. I'm English.

webmonkeyuk··on Lessons learnt making our web app responsive
Next in the series: "Lessons in server capacity learnt when we got more traffic than usual". The page doesn't load for me.

As an amusing aside "dom kop" (same phonetic as their domain name) in Dutch or Afrikaans translates to "stupid head"

webmonkeyuk··on Putting a GPS Tracker in the mail
Bit confused by the "burn" bit. Do you mean one of the cheapo vibration switches?

webmonkeyuk··on I fought my ISP's bad behavior and won
Only for the unregistered accounts IIRC. Can't you disable it after going thought the simple registration and claiming of IP address?
webmonkeyuk··on I fought my ISP's bad behavior and won
If the ISP was being transparent about where they were going to source traffic I'm surprised that they ever got onto the affiliate program in the first place.
webmonkeyuk··on How "junior" developers can become regex wizards
I'm torn a little on my opinion of this post. On the one side I applaud anyone who's willing to self-learn and isn't a "I'll just Google it" developer. On the flip side I tire of hearing people tell me that they've written a CMS of their own, in some cases piggy backing on someone who's solved the an identical problem pays dividends and will be more mature than your solution.

Perhaps for a self-learner a nice approach is to write it yourself and then go searching for a solution. That way you'll likely: validate what you did, figure out that you missed a detail or perhaps learn some new regexp foo or different way of writing the same thing.
