webinvest··on Granting Pardon for the Offense of Simple Possession of Marijuana
Does anyone know the rationale for why the laws are currently written this way?
webinvest··on Granting Pardon for the Offense of Simple Possession of Marijuana
I wouldn’t call it evil either. As a general rule, don’t do drugs in foreign countries when it’s illegal. If you must, do them in your home country or where they’re made legal.

Non citizens can’t vote so they aren’t his constituents.

He dismisses the fact that most cameras have flash storage inside and don’t need a network connection. Others can use Ethernet. He mentions wifi-enabled when it is wifi-required.

It’s not even a crime. It’s like using a sheet of plywood from the hardware for a novel use other than protecting your windows before a storm.

Or using a tomato for something other than a pizza base.

I can’t comment on Mortgage News Daily but the FHLMC, affectionately called Freddie Mac, is a pretty good source. They have a decent graph on their homepage. 30yr fixed rates are currently at 6.29%.

webinvest··on Attempts to Stop a Hurricane in its Track
Without hurricanes, Floridians would run out of water. Hurricanes bring rainfall all over the state. The aquifers would collapse, causing sinkholes all over the state. The rivers would stop flowing and become full of smelly algae instead.

People from other states probably think hurricanes are scary but most Floridians (except the ones on the coast or the ones from Cuba) don’t panic until it’s a category 5th hurricane. With the exception of CAT 5s, hurricanes have never been as bad as the news portrays them.

The biggest negative has been the noticeable increases in the mosquito population but it’s only temporary. Maybe Project Verily or something similar can help with that.

webinvest··on President Putin has announced a partial mobilization in Russia
That’s the beauty of HN. Being able to talk about important events and still be civil when discussing them.

I didn’t upvote the article because I thought the article was lacking details. Example:

>>>“New concepts were introduced into the Russian Criminal Code: including “voluntary surrender,” “looting,” “mobilization,” “martial law” and “wartime.””

>>>The rulings were passed unanimously.”

In my opinion, the article is lacking for not including the actual new code or sentences from the code.

Anecdotally, I spent a year on most of the online dating apps with the paid features. Even as a 6’1 guy with a good surfing photo, and some Europe (traveling) photos, it was still a waste of time, effort, and confidence for me. Eventually I met my now girlfriend through a trivia night meetup. No photos and we were all sitting down. Hopefully it lasts.

Thanks for that info. Does that also remove beneficial nutrients like calcium, magnesium, potassium, etc?
webinvest··on The Ethereum merge is done
With the price of ETHW currently at $22.80 and the price of ETH at $1500, I can’t imagine mining ETHW would even cover the electric bill. It’s also not clear to me what advantages ETHW would over ETC which is about $37 ea.

Previously ETC was often used as a lower cost dev-testing server for ETH applications that might not be ready for the main-net.

webinvest··on The Ethereum merge is done
Ethereum miners were using GPUs. AMD, Nvidia, and others. They could switch their GPUs from mining ethereum which is about $1500 per coin to Ethereum classic but that is only about $40 per coin. I’d guess that wouldn’t be worth continuing with since it would be much less than than their electricity bill. They could sell their GPUs on EBay or other secondary markets, switch to protein folding, cloud-based password cracking, or SETI sky scanning. Maybe they use them to play high resolution video games like most people. Some smaller percent might notice next month when they eventually see that their ETH wallet hasn’t grown over the next month and Google why that’s the case.

Crypto mining occurs mainly where electricity is either cheap or free. Hydroelectric and Geothermal tends to produce the cheapest energy so many large mining outfits were relocated next to Hydroelectric and Geothermal plants. Many are in remote northern areas where computer cooling costs are less expensive too. $HIVE blockchain technologies was running enough ethereum miners to mine 7675 ethereum ($11.5 Million dollars worth) during the 3 month period ending in June 30, 2022 according to their quarterly earnings report. 100% of all of their miners used renewable energy sources.

webinvest··on Show HN: I built an extension for analyzing rental properties in Zillow
Regarding only #3,

Banks can afford to give out loans that are less than inflation because they are creating money out of thin air to lend to you. Sure, the lent money is collateralized behind a property but it’s new money. It doesn’t really matter how much of a return they get as long as the return is higher than the default rate percentage and the return (after factoring in defaults) is positive.

There used to be restrictions like a 10% reserve ratio. But that’s been lifted in the US in 2020.

Big banks can also borrow money from the central bank to lend out. Current federal rate is 2.25%-2.5% and mortgages are about 5.9%. Thus banks keep the interest rate spread. Using those numbers, a $300,000 loan at a 30yr fixed rate is a bank product that will thus earn the bank $178,959.73 in interest. No wonder banks are the most wealthy class of businesses!

webinvest··on Ethereum Proof-of-Stake
Not related to miners but to the best of my knowledge, every transaction is broadcasted to the network from an IP address. Therefore the IP can be traced back or hidden with TOR or proxies.

Receiving cryptocurrency is by default anonymous because it requires no public action on the part of the receiver.

Except, checking a transaction tx or wallet balance on blockchain.info could flag the IP checking that balance.

I wonder what number of suicides each year can be attributed to disenfranchisement on dating apps. They can rob an above average man of his self esteem, self worth, and self value from past accomplishments and cause depression.
