If we lived in a just, and virtuous world we'd all be using cheap coaxial cables with BNC connectors via whatever version of SDI is the highest bit rate.

Have to imagine that the niche market for making 40F/4C "cold" water from luke-warm tap water (if you live in an area that is so hot the tap water is warm) is fairly small.

How could you figure it out if you’re using Boeing surplus carbon fiber that’s past its shelf life. [1]

Your data will be all over the place from surplus to surplus sale.

wcfields··on Why isn't Titan classed? (2019)
> the 'titanic tourism carnival ride' business model.

That was more marketing; the main biz model was to create enough buzz with the oil/gas industry to get bootstrapped and produce a product fleet of cheap subs for independent contractors to use for oil rigs.

wcfields··on Don’t use sugar substitutes for weight loss, World Health Organization advises
There is a brand that has no added sugar that I believe the poster up thread is mentioning based upon the ingredients. It's ok, but honestly tastes a little like just thick tomato sauce, could be a little more fermented/more vinegar, but it's a fine substitute for HFCS based ketchups.

wcfields··on Chevy Bolt EV and Bolt EUV production is ending this year
What's crazy is that they sell waaaay more configurations of the Fit for the Japanese market [1], even a "Crosstar" trim level with 4wd + hybrid! [2].

A real shame they discontinued the Fit in the North American market, I would have easily bought one but ended up with an HR-V because it's basically a Fit on steroids (same chassis, still has magic seats until 2022), but it's a big percent price jump: $17k (2020 fit) -> $21k (2020 hrv).

wcfields··on Ask HN: People who were laid off or quit recently, how are you doing?
Kinda a trickle down:

A handful of us were laid off in Feb from a global advertising agency's SF office. They had a lot of notable SF clients including a well known bank in the area that made some headlines, so ya know... A few other tech clients really tightened up their retainers as well.

> Viewship is an easy metric to collect but it ignores perceived value

At a previous analytics job we were working for our client, one of the larger streaming platforms as were trying to quantify value, and more importantly attribution.

Attribution was huge and was still being worked out by the data scientists and then re-worked by marketing C-Levels at the platform. By the time I left, If you signed up for the service and immediately watched "Big Movie" as your first watch, or you finished >50% of "Big Movie" within the first of signup then "Big Movie" was the attributed thing that got you in.

This helped drive decisions (or helped "justify" in retrospect) for day-and-date movies (play on the platform + in theaters same-day), or to take what would have been a theatrical and put it only on streaming.

Hey, have you ever thought of why even the $149 Black Friday loss-leader no-name-brand TVs all have Amazon Fire, Roku, or are now "Smart" in some way?

Certainly isn't because they need to incentivise you to connect it to the internet so it acts as a Nielsen-esq measurement device of all media you view on the screen via digital fingerprints that exist in all commercial media and advertisements. [1][2]

wcfields··on Hyundai’s Ioniq 6 EV makes its US debut
I installed 400a service on my 1100sqft home. I was getting solar installed, and my panel had to be updated anyway from an old fire-trap Zinsco. I asked the company how much more to do a 400a service and they said $500 more so I went for it planning on eventually being able to charge 2 EV’s at max amperage in the future.

I had a buddy [1] that worked in the kitchen at Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station for a few seasons in 2012-2014. From what he told me: The internet works at certain times of the day at different bandwidths depending on the satellite. I think at that time there was 3 in orbit, and one of them was a retired Navy sat that had like dial-up speed.

Also everything that goes to the station stays there so the vinyl collection is amazing, and they have a huge Betamax / VHS library and most importantly they have /The Thing/ on Betamax.

wcfields··on Investors sue Treasury Department for blacklisting crypto platform Tornado Cash
> ban cash

Well, it's not banned, but over $10k USD in cash you need to fill out an IRS form 8300 [1] precisely to curb criminal use of cash. (Although I'd argue it should be upped and pegged to inflation as 10k isn't what 10k used to be.)

wcfields··on What's SAP, and why's it worth $163B? (2020)
Sharepoint is similarly entrenched at DOE when I worked with them in 2009. Any project that gets a bid contract can't say specifically that it must use Sharepoint, but the requirements will be written in such a way that Sharepoint is literally the only system that fits all of them.
wcfields··on California to ban the sale of new gasoline cars
My prediction is that there'll be a growing business of vulchers putting in pay-per-use chargers in large apartment buildings that the landlord gets a kickback on, much like overpriced washer/dryers.
wcfields··on California to ban the sale of new gasoline cars
In SoCal I pay, at most, 28¢/kWh, but usually ~20¢/kWh with Time of Use [1]. You configure the car and/or EVSE to only charge at night when electricity is cheapest.

They should also couple a "nationalization" of PG&E with this too. Municipal run power is typically cheaper than investor owned power.

wcfields··on California to ban the sale of new gasoline cars
They'll end of failing Smog checks and eventually be sold to Arizona and/or driven over into Mexico.

In Baja cars with California plates and long expired registration tags aren't too uncommon.

wcfields··on Bitcoin Lightning network could disrupt $150B year payment/remittance industry
I noticed that abroad too that no one batted an eye at using a credit card for tiny transactions worth ~$2, but in the US an independent merchant would either have a $10 minimum or charge a ¢50 fee or both.
wcfields··on EVs cost 22% less to service than ICE cars, new data shows
In California the coin-op air/water are a scam. They'll take your money, but if you ask the attendant they can turn it on from the booth. Some may even have a secret button on the side to turn them on [1]. Unfortunately for EVs, the law only applies if you are purchasing fuel.

> California law requires that station operators provide free air and water to customers who purchase gasoline or diesel fuel. [2: Complaint form if you were denied]
