wavesquid··on Plan Ahead for Phase Out of 3G Cellular Networks and Service
As far as I know, since mid-2018, all 2G networks are offline in Australia. I've seen similar articles for other countries.
wavesquid··on Congress' new mandate to carmakers: Figure out a way to stop drunk driving
Doesn't everyone disable this the first time they're a passenger in their own car? (e.g. if your spouse is driving)
wavesquid··on End Software Patents
> I agree with this, but my key question is: why stop at software patents?

Because the key argument is that math is not patentable. Software patents are relatively uniquely expressible amoung patents as mathematical conjectures.

wavesquid··on Tomu – An ARM microprocessor which fits in your USB port
They're almost up to date with LLVM: https://github.com/espressif/llvm-project/
wavesquid··on TIL: Press '.' In a GitHub Repo for Magic
Note: only works if you're logged in.

It brings up editor that appears to be vscode based.

wavesquid··on Zig 0.8.0 Release Notes
Yes. There is a repo containing exactly that: https://github.com/ziglang/zig-bootstrap
wavesquid··on Comparative assessments of dietary sugars on cognitive performance (2018)
I did keto for 5 months or so back in 2014. I found the brain fog description very apt. I couldn't think beyond a couple of moves ahead, which began affecting my work. Going back to a normal diet I was fine again.
wavesquid··on What went wrong with the Texas power grid?
They're immensely difficult to restart once the aluminium solidifies: difficult enough that the answer is throw it out and make a new one. But there's a big enough difference between operational temperatures and solid that you can deprive them of electricity for e.g. 8 hours while you restart your other power generation infrastructure. IIRC for some aluminium smelters you can even run the reaction in reverse briefly if you need to jump start something.

(citations needed.... I'm recalling this from a story someone told me ~15 years ago about the Alcoa plant in Victoria, Australia)

wavesquid··on Databricks is an RDBMS
> Think view-on-view-on-view (there's a BigCo policy against them materialising data..), and where the filter is applied in the last step. The stuff of horrors, but something I've seen in more-than-one-BigCo.

That sounds wonderful (really). I was contracting for a BigCo where they materialised things all the time, and they would regularly end up running queries over multiple materialisations from different points in time, which invariably means that you always get wrong answers. I very much wished to put a stop to use of any materilised views, but didn't have the buy-in to make the policy.

wavesquid··on American Airlines has so much extra wine that it is starting a delivery service
Qantas (the flagship Australian airline) has done this for years: https://wine.qantas.com/

I have received far more emails from them since covid though with "special deals" that don't seem that fantastic.

Interestingly, I've also seen airline food kitchens starting to do home-delivery: https://www.gategourmetmeals.com.au/meals --> they sell packs of e.g. 4 microwave meals for ~$15.

wavesquid··on An Update About Changes to Facebook’s Services in Australia
The Age and SMH (as well as Nine) are owned by the same company, which is chaired by Peter Costello. Though non-Murdoch, it's rare to see anything non-friendly to the Liberal party on there.
wavesquid··on Mozilla's Speech-to-Text Engine Is at Risk Following Layoffs
I thought mozilla irc was shut down?
wavesquid··on The AWS Controllers for Kubernetes
This is great!

Are other companies doing similar things? e.g. I would love to be able to set up Cloudflare Access for services in k8s

wavesquid··on Using Zig to provide stack traces on kernel panic on bare metal (2018)

wavesquid··on ICANN delays .org selloff after California’s attorney general intervenes
Because other governments found it unfair that one country (the US) could control the global namespace.
wavesquid··on New iPhone SE
I bought an S10e on launch. It was too large for me and when it got stolen a couple months after I had it, I just didn't replace it. Have now been phone-less for almost a year, waiting for a good sub-5 inch android phone.
wavesquid··on Essential shutting down after failing to launch ‘GEM’ smartphone
2G is already turned off in Australia and being phased out elsewhere (they need the spectrum for 5G and 6G). 3G is the minimum available.
wavesquid··on I Ditched Google for DuckDuckGo
I just tried this search myself; and what I think you're after is the 2nd, 3rd(ish) and 4th result. https://imgur.com/HSnq77P.png
wavesquid··on Explaining 4K 60Hz Video Through USB-C Hub
The HP ZBook Dock with Thunderbolt 3 tends to be on ebay for around US$50 and should do 4K 60Hz.
wavesquid··on Kong gateway reaches 1.0 GA, now supports service mesh
Kong indeed can, it's part of our API gateway for years :)
wavesquid··on Kong gateway reaches 1.0 GA, now supports service mesh
Hi all,

I was the lead developer on the service mesh implementation. I've just pushed https://github.com/Kong/kubernetes-sidecar-injector public, which should make deploying kong a service mesh simple on kubernetes.

Let me know if you have any questions, I'll try and check over the next few days.
