watchdogtimer··on Why Can’t Riding Bikes in America Just Be Normal?
I made a bike[1] very similar to the authors about 10 years ago and have used it as my main vehicle ever since.

It's been extremely useful for getting groceries and hauling packages.

My experience has been similar to the author's, with people curious about it and often taking pictures of it as they drive past.

Most people in the US get little or no exercise. __Any__ exercise would be a big improvement over none.
watchdogtimer··on Self driving cars and beyond
Any estimate of how many people these can move at peak volume? I'm curious how it compares to the Underground.
watchdogtimer··on Tesla’s promises don’t compute with current physics and economics of batteries
> To meet Tesla’s claim of 400 miles in 30 minutes for a semi carrying 80,000 pounds would require its new Megachargers to achieve output of more than 1200 kW

1200 kw is a lot of power. That's the average amount of power used by 600 homes, or half of the output of a large wind turbine here in the Midwest, to charge a single truck.

If they use a 440 V supply to charge it, that'd be over 2700 amps.

watchdogtimer··on As U.S. Postage Rates Continue to Rise, the USPS Gives the Chinese a 'Free Ride'
The article mentions E-packet rates apply to packages less than 36" in length and less than 2 kg (4.4 lbs). What are the rates like for packages that exceed these dimensions? Are US-based e-commerce sellers any safer if they sell larger items?
watchdogtimer··on Iowa's handout to Apple illustrates the folly of corporate welfare deals
As an Iowa resident, I think it's worth mentioning that all this is happening at a period in time when state government has been experiencing multiple years of unexpected revenue shortfalls.

The governor may have to call the legislature back into special legislative session again next month because revenue is again coming in less than expected.

The three state universities will be increasing tuition 7% per year for each of the next five years because of budget cutbacks caused by these revenue shortfalls.

Part of the decline in revenue is due to the decline in the ag economy, but some have also attributed it to the increasing amount of tax breaks like these that Iowa has been giving out.

Furthermore, this is not just farmland. Waukee is a west Des Moines suburb, the fastest growing part of the state and supposedly one of the fastest growing parts of the US. If Apple hadn't purchased that land, it likely would have been purchased and developed by someone else soon.

watchdogtimer··on Latency matters
I've experienced this on every version of Debian or Ubuntu I can recall using.
watchdogtimer··on Latency matters
Funny, I've noticed just the opposite using vim on a desktop or laptop--and its always driven me nuts.

If I'm editing a file and type several repeating j or l commands (e.g., 'jjjjj' in command mode), there is noticeable latency between the last movement command and the last cursor movement.

I get no latency, however, when performing the same commands using the right or down arrow keys.

The 'h' or 'k' commands have no latency, either, just 'j' and 'l'.

I've been using vim for years and still find it frustrating. I haven't noticed the same problem with other vi clones (e.g., nvi or elvis).

Well done. I like the clean interface.
watchdogtimer··on Show HN: Geek Canteen, Healthy Food for Developers
Just curious--why did you make this a phone app I have to install, rather than just a web app? Making the first step of the onboarding process having to install the app makes it more difficult for users just to give it a try.
watchdogtimer··on Show HN: Automatic Discovery for Let's Encrypt Certificate Monitoring
A better link IMHO would be to the main page (http://keychest.net) to learn how the app works and see how it compares to it's main competitor, letsmonitor.org

I'm experiencing the same problem. The link at the top of the page works, but not the main button below.
watchdogtimer··on What works in e-commerce – A meta-analysis of online experiments [pdf]
+1. We run a small business that manufactures bicycle trailers which we sell direct to our customers over the internet. The only reason we've been able to succeed has been because we deal one-on-one with our customers.
watchdogtimer··on Google’s Environmental Report
Google's new headquarters[0] to be built in downtown London is being built parallel to the platform at King's Cross Station. It will have parking space for 686 bikes but only four parking spots for cars.

watchdogtimer··on The Experimental Layout Lab of Jen Simmons
You're probably right. I just haven't needed to many layouts complex enough to make it useful. I should look into it more.
watchdogtimer··on The Experimental Layout Lab of Jen Simmons
Frontend designers often extol the benefits of layouts using CSS Grid, but I have to wonder if it's really that important given that people spend the majority of their browsing time on a mobile phone.

While it's now __possible__ to layout complex designs easily using CSS Grid, it's usually not the best user experience on a phone. Why go to the trouble of making a beautiful layout with lots of white space that won't show on mobile without scrolling?

Yes, you can use media queries to give a better UX on mobile. But if the end result is going to be a single-column page that strips out whitespace for the majority of users, why not just use a collapsing columnar layout?

watchdogtimer··on Ask HN: What's the Hacker News of hardware?
I like http://www.cnx-software.com (which, despite the name, is more about hardware than software) and http://www.linuxgizmos.com.
watchdogtimer··on Litebook launches $249 Linux laptop
There is more information about this laptop over at https://liliputing.com/2017/03/litebook-249-linux-laptop.htm....

Looks like a nice machine for a low-end laptop. It's rare to find low-end laptops like this with a replaceable battery and 1080p screen. Running Linux is by default is of course a big plus.

I don`t necessarily agree with them choosing WPS Office over LibreOffice. Do they really think that users who choose this laptop over a Windows laptop would want software because it "looks more like Windows Office"?

FWIW, the 360 videos aren't working on Debian using Firefox-ESR (which is 45.4.0). :( I'm getting the error "Your browser doesn't support 360 videos."
watchdogtimer··on PayPal? No way
Wire transfers may work well in Europe, but they do not work well for making transfers from Europe to most banks in the U.S. The reason why is because banks in the US do not use IBAN numbers, and very few have SWIFT codes.

To do an international wire transfer into the US, it must first be routed through one of the few large banks that have their own SWIFT code (e.g. Wells Fargo), then often through a second intermediary bank before the payment reaches the receiver's bank. All the routing in the US is done using ABA numbers, which is unique to the US.

Few European banks seem to be able to handle this convoluted process. More often then not, when we've attempted to receive an incoming wire transfer from from a European customer, the payment has gotten misrouted because the sending bank neglected to fill out the application form properly.

By contrast, we've had very few problems receiving international payments via PayPal.

watchdogtimer··on Wire (E2EE IM and Voip) Now on Linux
This looks like a great service, but I have to wonder how long it will be around if it's completely free, fully encrypted, and there's no ads.
watchdogtimer··on Yahoo makes it difficult to leave its service by disabling email forwarding
If you already have your own domain, why not just get a cheap shared hosting account, and use the mailboxes that come with it for free? They generally come with unlimited mailboxes with IMAP/POP3 support, and cost < USD$4/month.
watchdogtimer··on A decentralized web would give power back to the people online
> Imagine if installing a server-side chat app, message board, project management app, or CMS were as easy as installing a desktop app. In a desktop app, it's usually one click to start the install and then, if necessary, you're guided through a few screens to complete the install. Want to uninstall? The OS (operating system) will provide a feature to manage that.

It's this way already. Virtually every shared hosting provider (Hostgator, Bluehost, etc.) provides a Cpanel admin panel with Softaculous software installer. All kinds of apps (blogs, CMSs, project management apps, etc.) are a single-click install and removal.

watchdogtimer··on Show HN: Mobi.css – A lightweight, flexible CSS framework that focuses on mobile
I like how simple and lightweight this framework is. The idea of setting all top margins to 0 makes it easier to adjust things, too.

But I don't like the idea of having to install both Ruby and node just to work with a simple scss file. :-(
