waspleg··on Canadian math prodigy allegedly stole $65M in crypto
The only person I knew who had BTC in like 2008 used it to buy drugs from the Silk Road. They're dead now so it doesn't matter.
waspleg··on I'm done with coding
How's your social credit score?
waspleg··on How to Train an AI Image Model on Yourself
Literally a Black Mirror episode.
waspleg··on Majority of US teens have lost trust in Big Tech
Top bracket taxed at 90%. Wealth disparity not at worse than 1920's levels as it is currently.
waspleg··on CentOS dropped because it “was not [..] providing [..] usefulness to Red Hat”
There are famous short-seller investors circling IBM for exaggerated earnings projections. Redhat could very well end up in someone else's hands sooner than later.
waspleg··on Ask HN: How do those eMMC Windows laptops work?
The school system I work for has thousands of devices with these. They're basically like an SD card for a camera soldered to the board. They do not have the wear leveling and other shit a real SSD has.

They're slow, (comparatively) unreliable and small. Because they're on the board a bad one means a new mobo which is generally not cost effective so it's done. I hate them and the cheap shitty hardware that they come with.

I'd like to point out that these came before Chromebooks but Chromebooks are also using them because they use the same shitty hardware as the cheapest Windows devices.

waspleg··on Pointless work meetings 'really a form of therapy'
"People often feel marginalised. They feel that they have no influence or position. In these cases, the perception is that meetings do not improve anything, but actually cause even more frustration."

Literally the last paragraph hits the nail on the head for, I'd wager, the vast majority of people.

waspleg··on Effects of Vitamin D and Omega-3 Fatty Acid on Biomarkers of Inflammation
I have MS. My neurologist straight up said many years ago that vitamin D is not a cure ... but he did recommend taking a supplement, unfortunately the urologist disagrees...
waspleg··on Google Plans to Deprecate FTP URL Support in Chrome
True. They're very much the new Microsoft and Chrome is the new IE. But the general public also doesn't know what it used to be like. I logged in just to up vote you. I wish we had functioning anti-trust laws.
waspleg··on Firefox 57 delays requests to tracking domains
I loathe ads and tracking. I run ublock origin/https everywhere/privacy badger (the latter of those 2 are from the EFF).

I run a dedicated pfsense machine (old optiplex 755 with an old ssd) I added a nic to it. All network traffic must physically flow through it (1 nic goes to lan 1 goes directly to the cable modem). It's running pfblockerng and DNSBL with a bunch of sources. It's amazing. I can watch youtube videos on my smart tv in the living room streaming with 0 ads.

waspleg··on Study shows the top 0.01% of Scandinavian households underpaid taxes by 30%
26 - 0 vote, now you know who runs both parties; the rich.
waspleg··on Facebook will lose 80% of users by 2017, say Princeton researchers (2014)
a lot of people have an app on their phone. that means no search.
waspleg··on Why isn't there a Google for the law?
because money

source: my dad was a lawyer for 20+ years.

waspleg··on Ask HN: What was your greatest accomplishment in 2016?
It's not over yet. I want to say surviving but given the spate of celebrity and personal friend deaths and my own health problems there's not enough wood on Earth to knock.
waspleg··on Hotel Stays, Especially in Inclement Weather
Vouchers also don't do anything for the possible damage/theft. I used to work hotels, mostly 3rd shift, and none would ever have gone for that. They also all always require ID cash (photocopied if cash) or not; even in the ghetto.

Let me possibly shatter an illusion though. Staying at a "nicer" more expensive hotel in not-the-ghetto doesn't make it safe or secure or have any less problems than the cheap ghetto ones. It just means the room might be cleaner and you might be compensated something for bitching instead of told to fuck off. I worked both.

I saw a lot of shit and basically if you go in and they look like they're cutting corners on things like, and I shit you not and am quoting an Indian manager fresh off the boat "We're not required to have coffee creamer", run the fuck away fast. I saw similar places not wash sheets to save soap money (different hotel, same mind set). I saw meth labs in "nice" hotels. It goes on.

But you're right they wouldn't do it just for the "reputation of being a homeless shelter" alone.

waspleg··on uBlock Origin for Microsoft Edge
Worst browser. Best ad block. Interesting combination.
waspleg··on My search for a MacBook Pro alternative
You could just have a desktop with vastly better specs. My 4 year old full tower still has better specs in almost every way than top end laptops do.

I don't understand the obsession with laptops. They have shit keyboards, small screens, are far more fragile, have less room to work (don't like having to clown-car my arms to type/use a touchpad), are generally under powered yet still exceedingly expensive. Yea, I have one at home and 2 at work - but I also have an illicit desktop at work (actually not allowed... for no reason).

The laptop's ONLY advantage is in portability, imo. But then I've never sat in a noisy coffee shop or whatever on one. I don't see the appeal in that either - I make my own coffee (roast/grind/boiled filtered water/french press) which is better quality for less money. To each their own I guess.

waspleg··on FCC says AT&T and Verizon ‘harm consumers’ with free data schemes
Completely valid comment. They've already been told to STFU until the regime change is complete. The FCC has been awesome under Tom Wheeler. It won't last much longer.
waspleg··on Qubes OS Begins Commercialization and Community Funding Efforts
There is such a thing as more than one kind of obligation. Are they LEGALLY obligated to share? Likely no. Are they MORALLY obligated? That's definitely up for debate.

EDIT: The parent does not deserve down votes because you disagree with their opinion. Grow up.

waspleg··on The Insecurity of OpenBSD (2010)
I was very fond of OpenBSD 20 years ago when I ran it (still have the t-shirt). It had a simple elegance that struck a chord with me. I haven't looked at it in a long time, the last time I looked it didn't support VMs at all and didn't plan to which was a deal breaker ;/

I've never heard of pledge so went looking to find out what it is and found Theo's presentation: https://www.openbsd.org/papers/hackfest2015-pledge/mgp00001....

waspleg··on The new MacBook Pro is kind of great for hackers
I read this as "fan boy with too much money replaces every peripheral he owns with USB-C; looks for ways to justify being an early adopter while showboating".

Fuck given? 0.

waspleg··on Fedex Waives On-Time Guarantee Starting Cyber Monday
I've had by far the best results with just regular USPS. FedEx is usually the worst, I've had them not even bother knocking and just leave the slip for the next guy multiple times (literally watched them do it on camera). UPS can be bad like that too but not as bad as FedEx.
waspleg··on I’m Sorry Mr. Zuckerberg, but You Are Wrong
I've been sick for weeks and done nothing but read news stories when able most of the day.

One of them said 170 million Americans read Facebook every single day.

How does that not have a massive influence?

waspleg··on Workplace by Facebook opens to sell enterprise social networking to the masses
I'd wager a large portion of the readers of this site are too young to know what it as like to not have your entire life under 24/7 surveillance.

I hope the back lash is enormous. Security = Privacy = Democracy; you can't have one without the others.

Chilling effects brought on by "you should be careful what you say (and to whom)" is the death of freedom of speech, and with it "free" society.

waspleg··on Why Writers Are the Worst Procrastinators
This is a great article thanks for posting it. My SO, in her not-day-job is a writer and stand up comic.

She has set a self imposed 100 word minimum per day and has been going over 3 months now in an attempt to combat this type of procrastination.

It seems to not only be working for her but people who read about what she's doing have also been motivated (but not me, and it's past my bed time ;)) to work on their own projects whatever they may be.

waspleg··on Amazon’s Ambition to Compete Directly with UPS and FedEx
^ This. And the race to the bottom continues.
waspleg··on Analysis of chronic fatigue syndrome study casts doubt on published results
I have MS. People can't/don't/won't empathize with things they can't see or understand firsthand. I could give work examples of being threatened illegally while on FMLA but posting this under this username is dangerous enough.
waspleg··on Pardon Snowden
It should embolden other leakers. The official reporting for these things is corrupted beyond viability. But Obama won't pardon him. He's at least as conservative as Bush and in some ways far far worse (that he's a considered a constitutional scholar is laughable).
waspleg··on The Age of the Never-Ending Performance Review
Oh good USSR style spy on your neighbors is back for corporate monetization.

You know, I watched a few episodes of the English show Black Mirror about how technology is used for vile dystopian hellscapes like this but it got too depressing to watching after about 3 of them.

How long before this is directly tied to your social media by the companies that require access to your accounts?

waspleg··on Hellcat: netcat that takes unfair advantage of traffic shaping systems
In my area, I have the highest tier of Comcast service (residential) at 75 mbps.
