wasd··on We saved $50k/year with a Go microservice coded in a hackathon
That's extremely helpful. Thanks.

Great story, thanks for sharing. I wanted to ask a quick question about something:

> Refreshing caches automatically

How do people usually handle this? Is this something done on the application layer or database layer? Where is the cache stored?

wasd··on Instacart raises another $150M
"Picked perfectly" was appalling to me. Literally the reason we cancelled was because that there was no concern for what was purchased. We regularly had the wrong brands, claims that store didn't have the items (they 100% did) or the produce was extremely over/under ripe.
wasd··on Sourcegraph Server 2.6: Symbol search for 75+ languages
"75+ languages" -- Does this mean that non typed languages are now supported? Ruby, python, and etc?
wasd··on Skylight, a Ruby profiler, free for open source applications
Has anyone used New Relic and switched to Skylight or vice versa? Been looking for some comparisons [1].

wasd··on Slack comes to Linux as a snap
I wasn't able to get it working through software center but this worked.

> $ sudo snap install slack --classic

wasd··on Navigate tax season using Stripe Atlas
1. If you are already incorporated, is it possible to still use this service?

2. I know the world doesn't revolve around CA but a sure lot of tech happens here. Any chance you'll add CA franchise taxes too?

wasd··on Ruby 2.5.0 Released
hey pka,

some comments here mention that they've been doing ruby for years and never even heard of poodr. i think that's less of a point.

it sounds more like you feel stifled at your current job. there's no right answer when it comes to a software stack and it doesn't sound like your coworkers are excited about the same things you are. it doesn't have to be that way! i hope you find a new consulting (or full time gig) that stimulates you intellectually. merry christmas and happy new year.

wasd··on Show HN: Work at a Startup – Find a Job at a YC Company
Really cool. What niche is this serving that TripleByte doesn't? My impression was that if you wanted to apply to any YC company at once, TripleByte was the way to go.
wasd··on Show HN: Ruby static type checker – proof of concept
I'm incredibly impressed. @stereo, can you speak a bit to your ambitions? Have you talked with any ruby-core team about integrating what you're doing?
wasd··on Extending per-second billing in Google Cloud
Thanks for the update! Very excited to get going on App Engine.
wasd··on Extending per-second billing in Google Cloud
Hey fhoffa, got a second for a GCP question? Am I calculating App Engine Flex pricing wrong? From what I can tell, it starts around ~$40 / mo (1 vcpu, 512 mb ram) which is 5x over comparable Heroku hobby dyno instance?
wasd··on Ask HN: Ubuntu Desktop Default Apps
One of my greatest frustrations is the default email client. It's caused a lot of headaches with mailto links. I would prefer if Ubuntu did not ship with one.
wasd··on Ubuntu is now available on the Windows Store
Does this change anything for people using Bash on Ubuntu on Windows? It seems like they just added the ability to change distros and install through Windows Store (but otherwise no changes), right?
wasd··on RTL MJIT – Register transfer language VM and JIT for Ruby
According to Aaron Patterson (tenderlove / ruby and rails core committer) this maybe Ruby 3x3 branch [1].

wasd··on Heroku CI Is Now Generally Available
Wow, that's awesome! Thanks for the heads up.
wasd··on Heroku CI Is Now Generally Available
Congratulations to the team that shipped this! CI / CD is something I welcome to comoditize and turn into an integrated feature. If any Heroku team members are out there, please consider reducing the minimum price for encryption at rest for your Postgres database so I can use you for my startup.
wasd··on Introducing Surface Laptop
Have you tried Bash on Windows? Been using it lightly (still dual boot) but it's pretty good experience.
wasd··on Online Bootcamp for experienced developer?
I subscribe to a few screen casts series ($5-30)/mo and find them very engaging for an intermediate or advanced developer. In particular, I like destroy all software (https://www.destroyallsoftware.com/screencasts) because it makes me think of programming more creatively along with how to think about different big picture concepts. Screen casts and books fill the niche I think you're looking for at an affordable cost but don't share the same teaching style. They're no where as near hands on, collaborative, guided or have same level of structure. But they're much cheaper and flexible in terms of time commitment.
wasd··on YC Summer 2017 Invites/Rejections
Still waiting and got an acknowledgement email. Submitted a few hours before deadline.
wasd··on Launch HN: Sudden Coffee (YC W17) – Instant coffee that doesn't suck
I don't know how common it is but I bring an aeropress and hand grinder whenever I travel. It's a ton of work and sucks. I drink pour over everyday (dial in temp, grind, ratio, and draw time for every new coffee), make iced coffee during summer, and subscribe to a coffee service. In theory, this would work better. I have no idea if the addressable market is big enough but I certainly wouldn't mind trying it.
wasd··on Michael Seibel, CEO of YC, is doing an AMA
What's an upcoming changes to YC you're excited for?
wasd··on Ask HN: What are the best resources to create an LLC/Incorporate?
That was really helpful. Thanks for sharing. I rescind my previous comment.
wasd··on Ask HN: What are the best resources to create an LLC/Incorporate?
I didn't know this, thanks.
wasd··on Ask HN: What are the best resources to create an LLC/Incorporate?
You should consider an S Corp instead of an LLC. In California, you have to pay an $800 franchise fee every year. It's significantly cheaper for an S Corp and any revenue can be passed to your personal income tax.
wasd··on A Sad Announcement
I understand timr. Sorry for your lose. For what it's worth, I found omniref to be very cool. Good luck on whatever you decide to do next.
wasd··on A Sad Announcement
Would you consider open sourcing some of your work on Ruby analysis?
wasd··on Ask HN: What was your greatest accomplishment in 2016?
Do you have any suggestions for resources for someone also looking to do cold canvas calling?
wasd··on Ruby 2.4.0 Released
And it's likely the static vs dynamic programming debate has been around longer than you coding ;).
wasd··on Tit-For-Tat Office Hours with a Seed-Stage VC
Hey Leo, is this best suited for 1 on 1 or a team (say 2) of cofounders?
