warpech··on I quit my business to start an open-source dev tool
I appreciate the Post Scriptum. Good luck!
warpech··on Double Commander
I loved VC. Its tiny size (less than 100k) made it fit on any floppy disk, even when it was already almost full. It inspired me by showing how powerful our computers are. It was an order of magnitude smaller than NC, if I remember correctly.

Here's some short story about VC: https://web.archive.org/web/20201027035410/http://www.softpa...

warpech··on The end of Optane is bad news
I guess it's because DIMM is physically closer to CPU than PCIe, so you get better bandwidth thanks to that (think that the data travels at the speed of light - the closer the faster).
warpech··on FOMO is disastrous for company strategies

warpech··on Iceland’s forest and bush cover has increased sixfold since 1990
Interesting, considering this old Icelandic joke I found once in a guide:

- What should you do if you get lost in a forest?

- Stand up! (other version: Just get off your knees!)

warpech··on Ask HN: What are you using to manage in your team the projects/features?
Kudos for building Codetree! I used it about 2017-2018. It helped meto manage a roadmap of GitHub issues.
warpech··on Challenge: Pixel perfect design
Apple invented the non-standard "viewport" meta tag and gave guidelines on how to use it [1]. The article that has popularized the term RWD mentions iPhone four times [2]. For me it is obvious that RWD started from the iPhone, but maybe our viewpoints (or viewports) differ.

warpech··on Challenge: Pixel perfect design
It's interesting that the nostalgia for "pixel-perfect design" comes from a company that seems to have been on a mission to remove pixels from the user's perception for the last 20 years.

First, Apple promoted skeuomorphism as the most visible difference from the pixelated look of Windows (OS X, 2001).

Secondly, they made pixel-perfect designs irrelevant by making a powerful, small handheld computer. It made the goals of pixel-perfect design futile and triggered the RWD trend instead (iPhone, 2007).

Thirdly, they successfully pushed Hi-DPI screens to the masses, which make the smallest elements on the screen too small for the naked eye to be seen. (Retina, 2010).

I say it with all due respect. These are absolutely brilliant achievements. Still, some "Yeah, thank us for killing pixels" would be in place.

warpech··on When old historic maps overlap with modern political maps
You are referring to the idea that some of these phenomena might not be due to the era of partitioning that ended in 1918 [1] but to the territorial changes after WW2 [2], in which people from former Eastern territories were relocated and mixed with the population of the "Regained Lands" in the West.

Interesting observation. It is hard to tell it apart, because it is the same line but different time.

I am no historian, so I shouldn't even try explaining. But for me, the "partitioning" explanation makes more sense, because during the communist time after WW2 there was a strong trend towards the unification of the country. If not for that, we would see even stronger divides at the other sides of the partition lines.

You can see the result of the 123-year partitioning of Poland on many maps, to the extent that it has become a meme:

warpech··on Show HN: Linen – Make your Slack community Google-searchable
If you could add GitHub-like Notifications, where the user has to explicitly mark a message as read, that would be golden.

I can't count how many messages I have missed on Slack because Slack assumed that I read them when in fact I did not.

warpech··on Ask HN: How to find a problem a solo founder could and would want to solve?
Consider changing your attitude towards your point 2. There are thousands of non-unicorn startups successfully serving their niches. See https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25614966 for plenty of examples. Go to a trade show/conference that exhibits software solutions for a certain business vertical and you will return inspired.

Not really. The early Internet was a tool for the army and the academia. Web3, so far, is a tool for speculants.

warpech··on Ask HN: How do I develop focus?
Limit your consumption of news (including Hacker News).

Paradoxically, there was a thread about this on HN recently: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30830772

warpech··on USWDS: The United States Web Design System
I shall stand corrected. According to Twitter, the hashtag #designsystem started to appear in the context of UX in 2012 [1]

I you used that term in 2010, you are a real pioneer.

warpech··on USWDS: The United States Web Design System
Are you sure about the meaning though? Afaik, it started to be used in the context of UX/UI starting from the book "Atomic Design". That is also the earliest reference in the Wikipedia article.

Of course, there were systems in graphic design used earlier [1], but before 2016, the thing in the OP would be called "The US Web Design Patterns" or "...Language" or "...Toolkit" or "...Library", for the lack of a common term.

warpech··on USWDS: The United States Web Design System
The term "design system" made a great career in a very short time. It wasn't really coined until 2016.

I hope AI can create links and backlinks in my notes for me. I guess it will be hard, because the notes are high context that's only in my head.

Most importantly, as far as I know, our brains not only make connections between concepts, but also grade them and mostly work on the strongest edges. It is not clear if we expect the same from the bidirectional note systems, or do we want to expose all the connections to "fabricate serendipity".

warpech··on A routine gem update ended up creating $73k worth of subscriptions
Perhaps before 7.1 Mongoid had a problem that the logical operators acted differently to ActiveRecord. But come on, this adjustment could have been implemented in another namespace or something...
warpech··on A routine gem update ended up creating $73k worth of subscriptions
The SerpAPI blog author seems cool about it, too.

After such a problem, I would roll back and never ever update this dependency again.

warpech··on A routine gem update ended up creating $73k worth of subscriptions
Mongoid docs[1] seem to be pretty cool about this change:

"As of Mongoid 7.1, logical operators (and, or, nor and not) have been changed to have the the same semantics as those of ActiveRecord. To obtain the semantics of or as it behaved in Mongoid 7.0 and earlier, use any_of which is described below."

Is it just me or is this one of the most terrible breaking changes in a popular, official library ever?

> What do you mean by 'worse is good'?

I meant this phrase as in https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worse_is_better.

Generally, we now have awesome levels of abstraction available for developers (and counting, for example see CSS Logical Properties). On the other hand, for simple solutions, less abstraction is the way to go. Luckily, there is still inline style for that.
