It may have been over the top, but it looked so cool. And it did tricks that made it very difficult to replicate on other platforms of the time, including multiple transparent layers and dynamic gradients to create fake "lighting" effects on the metal.
One of these days I need to put together a realistic CSS take on it; it should be doable now, but it certainly wasn't in 2006.
This sounds like a horrible vision for the future -- everyone completely separated, all interactions via video chat? All in the name of making sure we never have to leave our homes for convenience's sake?
This was one of their stated reasons, but as you note, this rationale doesn't make a whole lot of sense considering that most AI datasets would just train based off scraped Reddit data, which wouldn't require use of their official APIs.
In practice, it was likely to kill third party apps, in a copycat move of what Twitter did earlier this year.
In a properly designed area, anywhere you’d likely want to go would be walkable from a transit stop. This is often non-obvious to people who grew up in car-centric areas, where everything is necessarily spaced exceedingly far apart to make room for parking.

2. You also would have to bring your laptop with you
To me, one of the major value propositions for something like the Vision Pro would be that it could replace your laptop entirely. But it doesn't seem like that will be the case, at least based on what they've announced.
(That’s why I was focusing more on the mirror-your-Mac functionality)
Like the iPad, it seems I wouldn’t be able to do anything productive on the Reality Pro due to the lack of any sort of meaningful coding tools.
You’re right though, if they allowed windows to freely float, it would also solve the issue.
Ideally I'd love it if I could simulate a 3 monitor workstation. Maybe for the next iteration.
I mean, even though you’ve directly linked to the server list (instead of their even less straightforward front page), it’s still confusing. What is a new user supposed to do with this? It’s all incredibly opaque.
If Hillary refused to concede and told her followers to storm the capitol to try and overturn the election, then the two would be equivalent.
