warning26··on EU opens Microsoft antitrust investigation into Teams bundling
I mean, what would you expect?

The fact is, browsers aren't a product, they're a platform feature. Users have zero incentive to ever switch from whatever their OS came bundled with, unless you make a massive advertising push. The fact that Google managed to get people to switch to a non-platform browser at all is a shocking achievement.

warning26··on Waymo puts the brakes on self-driving trucks program
The robotaxis struggle with dropoffs and pickups for this reason I think.

In a dense city, there’s often nowhere you can legally stop. Real taxi drivers will often just stop in the middle of the street, or double park temporarily.

warning26··on EU opens Microsoft antitrust investigation into Teams bundling
Yeah, GP is forgetting what the browser landscape looked like in 2008.

IE was awful, and Firefox was…perfectly cromulent. Chrome was so much better than any of the competition.

warning26··on Apple already shipped attestation on the web, and we barely noticed
Yup -- you see this same effect on articles about Apple's draconian OS policies.

When Microsoft bundled IE with Windows that was terrible. But Apple bundling Safari and locking out competing browsers? That's just what's best for the customer.

warning26··on Remote work on HN: Who is hiring? – 69% jobs in 2023 are remote
> 1.) The commute is brutal. If you live in any decent sized city and have a family, it's likely that you are far enough away from the office that you have to drive 30+ minutes in pretty horrendous traffic.

This is fundamentally a problem with urban design, not with in-office work.

warning26··on Google’s nightmare “Web Integrity API” wants a DRM gatekeeper for the web
I already hate SafetyNet™ on Android, which punishes people for rooting their phones. This basically appears to be trying to bring that to the web.

Want to go to an online banking site? Then we'll need to make sure your computer is unmodified and contains no unapproved software.

warning26··on Twitter(now X) CEO Linda Yaccarino claims usage 'at all time high' in staff memo
I love how, now that Twitter (sorry, 𝕏) is incredibly unreliable and glitchy, they want to move into banking of all things.

Sign me up! I can't wait to have all my money accidentally zeroed out because the one remaining software engineer introduced a bug in prod.

warning26··on Twitter has officially changed its logo to ‘X’
Looks like the X11 logo, doesn’t it?

warning26··on Time to bring back asylums?
> For instance, someone who doesn’t go along with whatever the latest dogma is could be sent away by whom ever is in power.

This can be the case for literally any legal system. It's why checks and balances and an independent judiciary are important.

warning26··on Twitter Rebrands to X.com
That name didn't work when he tried to make it stick for Paypal, but it'll surely work this time!
warning26··on Time to bring back asylums?
> The issue is that when you carve out exceptions to human rights, they get abused.

Even something as simple as detaining a criminal is "carving out an exception to human rights". You're correct that this could be abused, but so can any law. It's possible to mitigate though; that's the entire reason for the concept of an independent judiciary.

warning26··on Time to bring back asylums?
> What this person wants to bring back is the ability to lock people up and keep people locked up there with little recourse.

Yes. This is what we need; the fact is, many mentally ill individuals need help, but are not capable of realizing that they need help, and will refuse any attempt to offer it. Without the power to detain such an individual against their will, that person will remain on the streets, which is a worse outcome for both that person and also everyone else.

warning26··on Germany is no longer exceptional, and joining the European mainstream
Yup -- people don't realize that if you want to get large-scale projects done, you have to step on a few people's toes.
warning26··on Momofuku Ando invented instant ramen (2016)
I don't think it can actually -- I believe if you start your title with "How", HN will automatically delete it; editing it won't stop the deletion, AFAIK.
warning26··on Momofuku Ando invented instant ramen (2016)
Somewhat related: has there been any consideration toward allowing titles to start with “how”?

The current behavior of automatically deleting the word results in some strangely constructed article titles as seen here.

warning26··on Comic Code: Monospaced interpretation of the most over-hated typeface
I love the concept, but charging people for what is essentially a joke seems excessive.
warning26··on Nicole Nguyen: What Threads Needs to Beat Twitter
The desktop app is the biggest missing piece IMO. Hosting updates from various government agencies (weather services, transit agencies, etc), is the thing that Twitter is (was?) really good at.

Without a desktop app, though, no agency would ever consider posting updates to it; the app means it exists in a weird silo.

warning26··on Qualcomm works with Meta to enable on-device AI applications using Llama 2
You're getting downvoted but honestly I'd agree insofar as the UI.

Google Maps is loaded with suggested content. What about lunch? Need a haircut? Check out these top rated places!! Would you recommend Google Maps to a friend or colleague?

Apple Maps is like what Google Maps was years ago: a map and a search box.

warning26··on Meta now says Threads' ActivityPub integration is “a long way out”
I enjoy the bizarrely self-congratulatory tone in which this is written.

Congratulations! We prevented a popular service from adopting an open standard! Mission accomplished! Open standards are the worst!

warning26··on Every time you click this link, it will send you to a random Web 1.0 website
Another interesting aspect of these classic sites is that they’re pretty much completely compatible with screen readers with zero additional effort.
warning26··on Twitter's platform usage up 3.5% week over week
...based on a new arbitrary metric that was seemingly created solely to look good.
warning26··on Ask HN: How could I safely contact drug cartels?
If only OP could drop his amazing elevator pitch, every cartel in town would contract with him! Disrupting the illegal drug space!
warning26··on People on TikTok are paying elderly women to sit in stagnant mud for hours, cry
It's time to ban all social media, or at the very least any kind of "for you" feed. It's the only way to put a stop to this kind of engagement maximization.
warning26··on Twitter admits to having a Verified spammer problem
Who could have guessed that making "verification" trivially easy would have downsides???
warning26··on Ask HN
Yes
warning26··on Forget New Twitter – It’s Time for a New Instagram
Agreed -- I realize this is a bit of a hot take, but I think we should just blanket-ban all forms of social media.
warning26··on “Sadly, I Think Godot Is a Scam. I'm Not Sure I Can Do This.”
Everyone always talks up Godot as the Next Big Thing, but as far as I can tell zero notable games have been made with it yet.

Are there any Godot games out there that are more than just tech demos?

warning26··on People helping Uyghur children struggling to build new lives in Turkey
Ukraine amounts to giving military aid to a sovereign country. Potentially controversial, but not exactly "instantly cause WW3" material.

Your proposal is, what exactly? Airdropping crates of machine guns over western China? I'm sure that'll go over great.

warning26··on Windows 9x and Word 9x at 800x600 resolution. Spacious. Comfy
One thing to keep in mind is that older devices (ie CRT monitors) usually had lower PPI than modern ones, so you could get away with smaller font sizes and it still looked readable.
warning26··on Twitter is blocking Threads links in searches
Relevant Elon quote:

> The acid test for any two competing socioeconomic systems is which side needs to build a wall to keep people from escaping? That’s the bad one!

Just replace socioeconomic system with social network!
