warmwaffles··on Car dealerships don’t want cash, they want to give loans
> Cars are waaay more durable than your assumption.

Truth. I bought a 2003 Ford Excursion in 2020. Parts are easy to find and are very compatible with F250s etc... It's all about resourcefulness. Not to mention I get to save a boat load of money in a used vehicle, I don't have to worry about damaging it too much. Scratch it a little with a tree branch, no problem, I don't care.

warmwaffles··on Satellite outage knocks out thousands of Enercon's wind turbines
I'm also confused as to why there is no communication cable like a fiber optic line to each one of these turbines along with the power cables. Am I missing something?
warmwaffles··on Bill to require job postings to include salaries passes Washington Senate
Apparently the low band of the pay can not be less than 90% of the top band. If you want that low band you have to make two job postings.
warmwaffles··on Bill to require job postings to include salaries passes Washington Senate
Texas does the same thing but every 2 years.
warmwaffles··on Moving the Linux Kernel to Modern C
> Apparently Mozilla, Microsoft, Google, IBM and all companies slowly moving their system infrastructure to Rust don't know enough C.

They are moving that direction because of the safety promise that Rust offers and it is a "hot" language with a bunch of momentum behind it.

warmwaffles··on Don't Use RAR
It's just a part of the scene. Momentum is a hell of a thing to stop in that respect. I don't know if 7zip or any other format will spit out chunked files in 50MB or 100MB part files for "easier" distribution. I say "easier" because it's the poor mans format to send files without using offsets to resume downloads.
warmwaffles··on Car stolen with homemade GPS tracker in backseat
I'm sure if a DA tried to pull this, a grand jury or judge would no bill this.

Personally, if found stuff that wasn't mine, it'd get pitched to a dumpster.

warmwaffles··on Podman 4.0
Thanks, I'll check it out. I've been wanting a replacement to fill the `rkt` hole in my heart.
warmwaffles··on IRS to adopt Login.gov as user authentication tool
> "if you got nothing to hide you got nothing to fear" mantra.

I know people like this and it's not a good mantra to follow. I have to remind them that all that needs to happen is to have political winds go the other direction and soon something they do regularly becomes illegal or suspicious. So dumb to give up privacy for safety.

warmwaffles··on IRS to adopt Login.gov as user authentication tool
> yet your entire life is accessible to the NSA.

I'll bet you money that most Americans are not okay with this either.

warmwaffles··on How can you trust a disk to write data?
Other's like the Samsung 963 NVMe have little capacitors on it that flush to disk in case of power loss. It's kind of cool to see it.
warmwaffles··on How can you trust a disk to write data?
> The problem is that disks are confirming writes before they actually store the write in the non volatile target.

Consumer NVMe's are bad about this. They'll fill a write buffer on the drive and flush it when it is convenient for the device, regardless of what the OS wants.

The Samsung 963 NVMe is an interesting device though because it has little capacitors on it that will flush the contents of that buffer when power is suddenly lost. But it still also just fills that write buffer and does not commit to disk when it said it did.

This is how they are gaming the benchmark tests.

warmwaffles··on Vim 9 will be dedicated to Sven Guckes
> Sven was my friend. I knew him well.

You are a wonderful friend.

warmwaffles··on YouTube CEO wants governments pass laws to have more control over online speech
The other issue they have to contend with is dealing with countries passing laws that give the executive authority to the administrate law with which ever way the wind blows. In the US once congress grants the executive power on something to administrate law it tends to flip flop on what is enforced every time the other party comes into majority.
warmwaffles··on Volvo and Daimler bet on hydrogen truck boom this decade
I edited and added some videos on HHO systems. It's a demonstration of splitting the H2O on the move rather than carrying a gigantic tank of liquid hydrogen.

warmwaffles··on Volvo and Daimler bet on hydrogen truck boom this decade
> Most of the trucks nowadays can be replaced with trains. Let's focus on that first.

Yes and no. Trains do not work well for distribution centers like walmart, krogers, target, etc... The last 1-100 miles will need trucks.

Long haul, yes, trains _can_ be used. But there are situations where that is not a feasible solution.

warmwaffles··on Volvo and Daimler bet on hydrogen truck boom this decade
They will not be carrying the hydrogen in a compressed form. Most solutions are to carry the water and split the hydrogen and oxygen on demand. This reduces risk of explosion.
warmwaffles··on Ransomware gang threatens release of Washington D.C. police records
I don't trust them either. I should have clarified that, but government seems to always lag behind on security updates for all sorts of devices.
warmwaffles··on Ransomware gang threatens release of Washington D.C. police records
This is why I do not trust government registries for anything. It _will_ leak and it is just a matter of _when_ that leak will happen.
warmwaffles··on A New AWS SDK for Rust
I've had mixed success with VSCode and JVM related stuff. Although the projects I was working on were using some really obscure Maven stuff and god forbid gradle.
warmwaffles··on A New AWS SDK for Rust
Honestly though, VSCode has been pretty good in this respect. Although I wouldn't use it to write Java or Kotlin, but for C/C++/Zig/D/Rust it's been good.
warmwaffles··on Goodwill doesn't want broken toasters
Thanks for the NPR video. Eye opening.
warmwaffles··on Use Alacritty instead of Termite
It also depends on your window manager too. I use BSPWM and tabs just always felt off when I could quickly flip to another workspace.
warmwaffles··on How Cities Will Fossilise
Uh no, axis and allies produced the cheapest/most effective means to win the war. Take for instance the Stg44, mostly stamped sheet metal. Russian PPSH, stamped sheet metal.
warmwaffles··on Pandora says laboratory-made diamonds are forever
Instead of a diamond ring, I went with a saphire ring. My wife likes blue and it was all I could afford at the time (~$800). She loved it either way and knows we were dead ass broke at the time and doesn't complain.

She works as a physical therapist now and wears a silicon ring because she bent the wedding ring giving CPR to a patient in a hospital a few years ago (patient lived).

warmwaffles··on Mining robot stranded on Pacific Ocean floor in deep-sea mining trial
I know that mining methane hydrate off of the ocean floor has been a discussion. We would be wise to try and get that out and contain it / burn it before it is released into the atmosphere as pure methane.
warmwaffles··on Apple’s M1 Positioning Mocks the Entire x86 Business Model
Did Mores Law take into account 3D density or was it just single layer compactness?
warmwaffles··on Stranded sailor allowed to leave abandoned ship after four years
I don't know how collateral on a mortgage on a ship this size works. But I am pretty sure even if they handed it to him, he couldn't do anything with it because it would have a Lein on it.

Your point still remains valid though.
