warent··on Using any C++ library in Godot
It depends on what your use case is. GDExtension is the standard way to go, unless its API is too limited and you have to access/modify engine internals not otherwise exposed.

That being said, this has no impact on distribution either way as far as I know.

warent··on The AI Productivity Gap
Very well said.

Programming has always felt like converting thought-stuff into something that the computer can understand. That's still the same, it's just a different language, and much faster.

My hot take is: if people are saying AI code is bad, yet they're using cutting-edge models like Opus 5, then those same people are writing bad code even without AI.

I'm finding that AI today can write excellent code, as long as you plan, review, and help it along with a little guidance.

You’re layering several hypotheticals on top of each other, which leads to progressively distant possibilities. Good on you for caring about humans though

warent··on ‘ELITE’: The Palantir app ICE uses to find neighborhoods to raid
Palantir came to me multiple times over the years asking me to interview as a senior swe. The temptation was very strong back then. Insane pay package as you can imagine... but I had a really bad feeling about them and always turned them down.

What a huge relief. One of my best moments of foresight.

Sure, they build innocent dashboards in the same way that your name is an innocent Dutch word. Obvious bad faith arguments coming from a troll.

Thanks for sharing. Absolutely right; people need to feel useful and valued—not to mention, jobs can help us get out of the house and connect with people.

Just to be clear, are you saying the only life work that you can find fulfillment in is work that can be perfectly automated and handled by AI? Do you have an example of what you mean?

warent··on Replacement.ai
Runaway capitalism! Time for me to log off for another ~2 years
warent··on Replacement.ai
Elites unilaterally claiming and reaping the benefits of automation (i.e. consolidation of wealth) is not a law of nature.
warent··on Replacement.ai
You’re right and validating the point.

A specific part of GP’s comment keeps getting overlooked:

So the problem isn't robots, it's the structure of how we humans rely on jobs for income.
Humans being forced to trade time for survival, money, and the enrichment of the elite, is a bug. We are socially conditioned to believe it’s a feature and the purpose.

Nobody is saying robots should replace human connection and expression

Edit: tone

You’re getting a lot of negative feedback for whatever reason, but you’re absolutely right.

I for one remember reading about possible silicon/methane based life, etc. Actually, here’s a whole wikipedia article on what you’re talking about.

warent··on GameMaker to be free for non-commercial purposes and have one-time fee license
I've been using https://cascadeur.com/ to animate the models that I hire artists to make
warent··on GameMaker to be free for non-commercial purposes and have one-time fee license
If you have the money for it, you should really consider hiring a contract artist to supplement your gaps.

A concept artist and a 3D modeling artist altogether will cost like $3000 for 1 fully complete character that fits your vision. For 2D probably a lot cheaper.

For me, $3000 is worth the months/yrs of saved time.

Of course if you are having fun learning the art side and don't care about the destination as much then ignore this and have fun with it! If you practice every day for a year you'll probably start getting close to what you invision.

EDIT: I'll also add that it's possible most of the aesthetic you're looking for can be achieved via shaders (for both 3D and 2D games). A lot of art looks very different in-game because of shaders doing all kinds of manipulations.

WOW that's amazing how different people's experiences can be.

I smoked one pack spread out 2 or 3 days, for about 3 years (in college). Rarely would do a full pack in a day.

Quitting was pure torture. I stayed up 24 hours walking laps around my campus. Took like four full days for cravings to go away.

Haven't had a cigarette in 10 yrs. Occasionally enjoy a cigar without problems

There is no hate here nor anything intended to be a personal attack on specific individuals, but clearly my comment struck a nerve.

This comes across as a saddeningly extreme armchair psychological evaluation and extrapolation to just attack my entire character.

warent··on SpaceX files for new 29,988-satellite W-band network
Sharing this in a forum full of "billionaires temporarily down on their luck" is bold and not likely to end well; yet, I agree with you and GP. Hacking should not be synonymous with runaway capitalism, siphoning human energy, and plundering the earth.

Star Trek economy for all!

warent··on Celebrity Flights
In the same way that vaporizing vicious dictators--subtracting how many people they personally killed by their own hands--would have no detectable difference to global murder rate.

This specific idea of limiting CO2 is being taken a bit too out of context of the broader point. Sanctions against Russia hasn't stopped the murder, any more than limiting individual CO2 consumption would stop climate change. Yet both are correct actions because they are steps in the direction of fixing larger issues.

EDIT: clarify wording

warent··on Celebrity Flights
Well, I'm glad we're finally on the same page that you are in fact specifically defending top-consuming billionaires. Conversation ends here
warent··on Celebrity Flights
Maybe the disconnect here is a misunderstanding of how much wealth billionaires have. We could increase fuel tax by 1000x, increase landing fees by 1000x, and this would not even begin to give billionaires pause on waste and excess flying.

The average person will be priced out by taxes and increased fees far long before any mega wealthy person will even feel it as a stiff breeze against their accounts.

warent··on Celebrity Flights
Not sure why you're so deeply triggered by this; is your name on that list of top consumers that you would be personally affected?

Your comment comes across as yet another average joe randomly defending billionaires wrecking the world while we take the consequences of it. warent··on We are beginning to roll out new voice and image capabilities in ChatGPT
This is the classic teenage thought of sitting in a bus / subway looking at everyone thinking they're sheep without their own thoughts or much awareness.

For everyone who we think is an NPC, there are people who think we are the NPCs. This way of thinking is boring at best, but frankly can be downright dangerous. Everyone has a rich inner world despite shallow immature judgements being made.

warent··on We are beginning to roll out new voice and image capabilities in ChatGPT
The number of comments here of people fearing there is a ghost in the shell is shocking.

Are we really this emotional and irrational? Folks, let's all take a moment to remember that AI is nowhere near conscious. It's an illusion based in patterns that mimic humans.

warent··on A boy saw 17 doctors over 3 years for pain. ChatGPT found the right diagnosis
Interesting, the way I interpret what you're saying is "Obviously ChatGPT can make an accurate medical diagnosis" in the same way of "Obviously a Python app can be rewritten in Go"

Go has been around for quite a while now. ChatGPT relatively has not. If Go was still quite new and people were unsure of it, then your article headline actually does makes sense.

For people such as myself, it is not obvious that ChatGPT could do such things, hence the headline is useful context.
