Amtrak is delayed so often, I'd be hard pressed to blame the commuter for it.

I hate Newark airport so much because of this. Even worse, as a non-American just visiting, I tend to not have mobile data stateside. The wifi is pretty shit in many spots, I've had to literally leave one place because I could not get a wifi signal to even order and the staff refused to help. All this nonsense while there is a tablet right in front of me! Stupid company that does this, stupid airport that allowed a company to do this.

I had a finder window open still on another workspace. Doing this still does not give you a new finder window. You then have to press cmd+n...

If I wait a second before pressing enter, spotlight decides that instead of Activity Monitor, Dropbox.app is now the top hit for this query.

ward··on Uber loses licence to operate in London, will still operate while appealing
I used to think like this (and still do for movies and such), but recall reading that a driver under 4.6 or 4.7 rating will barely get any clients matched any more.
ward··on قلب: a non-ASCII programming language written in Arabic
There is definitely a difference. If you don't hear it, you might be saying one of them incorrectly? Wiktionary has audio files for input (English) and put (Dutch) if you need a comparison. In IPA the difference is ʊ vs ʏ. In terms of describing it to a Dutch person I would say the English u is somewhere between the Dutch u and the Dutch oe sounds.

> I'm wondering about your personal reasons also.

That's an ad hominem for something you clearly did not properly check yourself.

- "Edit Berces, 24 hour treadmill world record holder; holds several Hungarian records". She actually had the overall when she got it, broken by men since then. (http://www.recordholders.org/en/list/treadmill.html)

- "Frith van der Merwe, set Comrades Marathon records for both directions". Female records. When she ran the 5:54 down record in 1989, the men's record was at 5:24 from three years before. When she ran the 6:32 up record, the men's record was at 5:27 from two years before. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comrades_Marathon#Winners_and_...

- "Elena Nurgalieva and her sister Olesya Nurgalieva have won a total of 10 Comrades Marathon titles between them; Elena holds the uphill course record (6:09:24)." They both won the _female_ editions. The lead man finished 30+ minutes ahead of them. The record is a female record (see previous).

- "Camille Herron, first ultra athlete to win 2 World titles in the same year (2015- 50K and 100K); 2017 Comrades Marathon Champion; holds the World Best for 50 Miles (5:38:41), 100 Mile Road and Trail World Record (12:42:40), 12 Hour World Record (149.193 km, 92.66 Miles), 100 Mile Track World Record (13:25:00), and 24 Hour World Record (262.193 km, 162.919 Miles)[22]". Women's world titles. Women Comrades Marathon Champion. Women's World Bests. Just scroll up in the wikipedia page you linked: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ultramarathon#IAU_World_Best_P...

What you linked is a list of very impressive ultrarunners, male or female. The women you then linked from that list _are_ incredibly impressive runners in their own right. They would beat nearly any man that shows up. They are still outcompeted by their elite male equivalents though and it is not even close.

> Science becomes a Special Discipline requiring Special Language different than what your family uses at home. Like if all science were still done in French or Latin, and you needed to study those to read a paper.

You realize this is still a problem for most of the world and needing to learn English, right? :P I'm hoping we can solve this in my lifetime with everyone knowing one standard language through education as a child, but as it stands the struggle is real for many of my fellow non native English speakers.

That said I agree with you, all these differences are a pain and I'm confronted with them way too often in my daily life.

ward··on OpenStax – openly licensed textbooks
I like it.

For some of these though, I feel like it would be nice if an "order" was established between different books (or the lack thereof mentioned). At least, I do not immediately seem to spot a mention of this.

What I mean is that I assume College Physics comes before University Physics, but at what point are you ready to start Astronomy? Also, where does College Physics for AP Courses fit in? (that might be more obvious for Americans?) How about the Biology books, do I need them for Anatomy?

ward··on Runner Disqualified After Claiming 2nd Place in Fort Lauderdale Half Marathon
It says so in the article, it is the Garmin Forerunner 230 or 235. The 230 uses a chest strap for heart rate, the 235 has optical heart rate built in. The software is Garmin's. To connect the watch and get the data off it you can use Garmin Connect (works via your phone and bluetooth) or you can connect the watch with a wire and use it as you would a regular hard drive. The files on a Garmin are saved as .FIT files. I use a Garmin Forerunner 225 and am quite happy with it.

30% of the ranking's rating is based on nobel laureate/fields medal in alumni or staff. 20% based just on amount of publications in Nature and Science.

I never know why people rate these rankings so highly when there are such unimpressive metrics like these.

Not to mention that this particular ranking does not seem to consider education at all anyway, which is what the GP was talking about.

ward··on SourceForge Acquisition and Future Plans
NB: I used to help with STK development around 2011-2013, so have a likely biased view in this particular discussion.

Actually, SuperTuxKart definitely moved some things away from Sourceforge already. You can find the Github account at https://github.com/supertuxkart. (Finished) assets and their "development" files (blender files, lossless audio, ...) are still on Sourceforge. I have not been actively involved with the project in a few years now, but as far as I am aware this is due to the simply enormous size that assets take up in a game. The finalised assets download is 650MB, the originals is 1.5GB (see http://supertuxkart.sourceforge.net/Source_control). Due to the nature of svn this is only the current HEAD, you can imagine how big of a git repository this would end up becoming, where you by default download the entire repository. (EDIT: Github allows repositories of up to 1GB in size, see https://help.github.com/articles/what-is-my-disk-quota/)

Furthermore, up until recently I believe Github severely limited the size of binaries you could upload. You understand this puts them at an impossibility.

Also, Sourceforge provides mailing lists, Github does not.

The wiki could be moved from Sourceforge to Github, but I do not know if that is a project they currently feel like undertaking. The current setup uses mediawiki and is easy enough for non-developers to update as well as having the same style as the landing page. If you switch to Github wiki, then the style breaks completely with the rest of the STK site. If you switch to a project page by means of the github pages, then you make things (I believe) significantly more difficult to update for the less technically oriented volunteers.

ward··on Singular ‘They’ Is Word of the Year
But you also use "vous" as a form of politeness, be it to people older than yourself, more formal situations, or just people you do not know. It is very prevalent. This form also still has the verb in its plural form despite talking to only one person.
ward··on Composer – Disable GC when computing deps and refs
Ugh. I remember that, I had posted on that to explain to the developer why there was so much attention and kept receiving mails and notifications from github for ages. At the time there was no way to "stop watching" when you had commented on something, if I remember correctly.
ward··on Put an end to people mispronouncing your name
Yet to encounter a monolingual English speaker to be able to pronounce my first name "Ward" (Dutch speaking Belgian). Only one I know of was someone who had spent several years in Paris (so he knew French and wasn't actually in the monolingual category anymore).

I recorded this one several years ago: http://wardje.eu/dll/ward.wav

Let's not even get started on my last name...

ward··on Fake Name Generator
Same in Dutch-Belgium setting. None of the names sounded realistic and when van de/van der or variants were used it was always in lowercase which is a thing from the Netherlands. In Belgium it'll be in capital letters.
ward··on Why is a minute divided into 60 seconds, an hour into 60 minutes?
And the beauty is that you are still able to easily convert it to the type you are used to. I, as a Belgian, might blink once when you use hectogram, but it is trivial to convert it to what I am more used to (say kg or g).
ward··on We switched from an icon font to SVG
I know and because of this something nice looking in one font becomes something completely useless when not using that font. (like the Github character in my previous post) It's exactly what I dislike about the entire practice. I don't want to have to use a certain font to make sure your site doesn't break.

I like the consistency of having the same fonts that I like and find readable in my browser as I have in every other window on my computer. Browsers give me the chance to aim for that consistency by picking one font for all sites, but then some sites look terrible because they rely on some particular font to show non standardized icons.

ward··on We switched from an icon font to SVG
Ok, allow me to rephrase. Fonts shouldn't be used as icons in such a way that the same point gives me a wholly different icon in a different font. A 'y' will look like a 'y' in any reasonable font. Github's settings icon just looks like a broken box in most other fonts () and if it doesn't, then you're still not sure it resembles something that would, in some way, remind you of "settings".

I'm not a fan.

ward··on We switched from an icon font to SVG
As someone who does not allow his font choice to be overriden, yes please. Fonts shouldn't be used as icons, it has felt wrong to me since wingdings.

Document Font Toggle ( https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/document-font... ) helps for the few sites I use frequently enough that do this, but I still don't like the inconsistency in looks it gives across websites then.

ward··on Signholder Receives Over $24,000 In Bitcoin After QR Code Appears On ESPN
As a confused Belgian, what is meant by "Unlike traditional bank accounts, where you would never share your account number on national television, Bitcoin public addresses are secure"? Giving out your account number in Belgium is pretty secure, nobody can do anything with it beyond putting money on it.

What's different in the USA? What extra info are you handing out by giving your account number beyond "this is a 'bank address' that you can use to send me money"?

ward··on The Onion quits print
I believe they were free, or maybe the box...thing was just broken. I remember being amazed seeing The Onion in a printed version when I was in Philadelphia for a bit (I live in Belgium), always just assumed it was but a site. Saw them outside the Superfresh on South and 10th, I believe.
ward··on Firefox fixes save gigabytes of memory on image-heavy pages
That's actually Hacker News being terrible. Their font declaration is just "font-family: Verdana;" so if you don't have Verdana installed (which just about never is installed by default on Linux), it defaults back to the one mentioned in the browser settings (which tends to be a serif font).

Hacker News could've made their font declaration have a fallback (like "font-family: Verdana, sans-serif;") and things would look way better by default.

As for me, I solved it by editing userContent.css and adding a font-declaration for Hacker News myself. (or you could use something like the Stylish addon)

All in all, I'd say it's the fault of website creators.
