ward··on The Evolution of a Python Programmer
On the other hand, that was 769 days ago.

Edit: Just realized you might be pointing this out to help the interested reader, I first assumed you were reprimanding for reposting.

ward··on IE9 pwn2owned with 0-day with exploit working back from IE6 to IE10 on Windows 8
I thought that too, at first, but it seemed to blatantly illegal to believe. Going by their site, it's mostly for government agencies against other agencies?[1] I'm not proficient enough at law to comment on the legalities of it.

Another possibility I had in mind is that they want to get paid by people wanting to fix this vulnerability on their systems. eg, company X will have to come to them if they want their IE browsers to receive the patch against this bug.

ward··on Getting the News — Evan Williams
> I’ll occasionally type in the domains of other blogs, but if I find myself doing that, it’s a sign I’m not very focused and should get back to work.

This is so true (for me at least). Especially when you reach that point that you actually checked some site only an hour or so earlier and know nothing new of interest with be there.

ward··on Google's new "batshit crazy" UX
Also odd: You can keep giving "kudos", refresh the page and repeat, the counter doesn't mind. Can't seem to take your vote(s) away though.
ward··on Now You Need Quora Credits To Ask Questions
Not to mention the ages it took before you could simply make an account without an invite and what not. I never understood the hype.
ward··on Firefox 12 will finally have a New Tab Page and Home Tab
Was this really that "long-awaited"? I for one quite like a clean New Tab and if I did want something like the envisioned, then I don't think 3 by 3 would quite cut it. Not to mention that if people were really that anxious for it, I would be pretty sure they could find an addon with that kind of function.

Good thing that like just about everything in Firefox, you can configure it to your needs when it lands. :)

Side note, for those interested of an overview of planned features in Firefox: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Features/Release_Tracking

ward··on Techmeme redesign
I have neither, hurrah!

As for the site, why is the JavaScript and CSS inline? Makes for pretty lousy caching...

ward··on World IPv6 Launch on June 6, 2012, To Bring Permanent IPv6 Deployment
At the risk of sounding ignorant... what's special about Wednesdays?
ward··on Twss.js

Darn!

ward··on That’s what she said classifier using node-twss

ward··on The Pirate Bay Will Stop Serving Torrents
> This is topical, since this week courts in both Finland and the Netherlands ordered local Internet providers to block the torrent site.

Is there a list of countries where this has been ordered by courts? I know it's already the case in my country (Belgium) as well[1].

ward··on Bigger than Google+, MySpace isn’t dead yet
Isn't the focus completely different, I thought MySpace became a hangout for small bands and the likes? (Though I assume MySpace still wants to be more than that)
ward··on iPad Survives Fall From Edge of Space in Jaw-Dropping Video
Not accusing you of doing so, it just struck me as relevant. I didn't notice before it was just an exact copy of their title. I would argue that in this case a title edit could've been better.
ward··on The point of the long and winding sentence
As a little addendum to that: the way that the articles of sites of some news agencies have this uncanny tendency to turn every single sentence in a paragraph of its own is something that's been bugging me. I know everyone feels like getting their article online as quickly as possible, but does that really have to make for worse content? I say worse, because if you take a step back and look at one of those articles it just feels like there's way too much whitespace and the entire article just looks like some laid out "tree" for content still to come.

Side note, I've been told, especially when in elementary school, that I made my sentences too long, though I was never sure if it was just the contrast with other kids. Do I still do that? It's been a while since someone told me so, not to mention that I'm not aware whether that property passed over to my English, a language I didn't "properly" start learning in high school, as a third language.

ward··on iPad Survives Fall From Edge of Space in Jaw-Dropping Video
I don't know why you didn't mention it in the title, but I would think it's pretty relevant that it wasn't just an iPad. It was "An iPad with a G-Form Extreme Edge case". Doubt the survival is something the iPad should be credited for.
ward··on Reddit successfully pressures Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) to back off support of SOPA
Must we have politics on Hacker News...

Edit: It always ends up in bickering about viewpoints anyway.

ward··on Turning off Google search results indirection
I get the same result on google and in duckduckgo it doesn't appear. I think it's also worth pointing out that "/dev/urandom" doesn't show bolded (as in "we found the string in this particular search result") until the 25th or so result. I don't know if duckduckgo just shows the bolding less often or that it just sorts its results very awkwardly.
ward··on Google+ passes 62 million users. Adding 625,000 new users per day.
In hopes you'll still see this, is there some sort of obvious Google+/Google Calendar integration in the works? Or just somewhere an official roadmap available for the Google+ development?
ward··on Google+ passes 62 million users. Adding 625,000 new users per day.
Guess I'll state the question: How many of them actively use it? Yes, yes, before anyone jumps in with the "but you have to follow interesting people", I know that side of Google+.

My question is more targetted at all those people that (had to) make an account for w/e reason, but just don't open it anymore. I can only assume they are included too, are there estimates to their numbers?

Edit: I do use Google+, I just notice a lot of (seemingly?) 'dead' accounts.

ward··on It only takes the mistreatment of one customer.
I cannot fathom being the only one not wanting to split up discussion over this like crazy, so I would suggest keeping discussion of this event in the earlier posted thread[1] that also happens to have more upvotes and comments (at the time of writing).

Am logged in and still experiencing it. Not sure what causes it. O well.

> We are sorry but the information that you have requested cannot be found. Please try searching or browsing the Help Centre.

Either there's something temporarily wrong there, or the page got removed. Whichever it is, that's the error I get. Searching for "find my face" gives me a link back to the page you linked (same link, so page still doesn't work).

ward··on Go Daddy No Longer Supports SOPA

I'm relatively sure the idea started on reddit too.[1][2]

ward··on KDE Doesn’t Suck Anymore, People Finally Realize
Not to sound harsh (well maybe), but that blog post doesn't really seem to add anything to the article it links to. Why not just link straight to said article?
ward··on Where's Waldo?
Gone with Where is Waldo?! The all new meta-existential gamebook Why is Waldo? is out now in your nearest bookshop!

I felt dirty with all the exclamation marks.

ward··on Microsoft decides to automatically update Internet Explorer for everyone
Seems like a bit of a stretch to require jQuery for a snippet like that.
ward··on The biggest iOS 5 bug you've never heard of
True, but an interface that you tend to use for messaging to one person should give an indication that you are, instead, messaging to several.
ward··on Snake game in a data: URI
Aah, the time I wasted on that one and the Gorilla game. It's a bit odd given how advanced our current games are.
ward··on The biggest iOS 5 bug you've never heard of
It is if there is no indication that you are replying to everyone though.

Disclaimer: I don't have a fancy phone so I don't know how clear things are.

ward··on Code snippets on Microsoft website shown in form of images.
That feels like a situation that could easily end up (copy pasting something, someone adding another var, ...) in an unexpected global variable declaration.

    var foo = 4,
        bar = 5,
        baz = 6,
        sprinkles = 'wee';
        qux = 'quux';
Making `qux` global.
