waltercool··on Big Tech's A.I. Data Centers Are Driving Up Electricity Bills for Everyone
It's usually the opposite.

When a company requires lot more energy, power plants are expected to produce lot more.

When a power plant produce a lot, the low consumption rates tend to get cheaper. It's gets cheaper to produce energy as the demand increases.

This is, of course, considering the input material is not scarce, like hydro power plants or wind power. Everything else (coal, oil, nuclear, gas, solar) should be easy to increase supply/demand.

waltercool··on Europe launches program to lure scientists away from the US
I disagree. You can't kill million years of history, so you can get more immigrants.

Languages are lot more than speak, it also describes people and the way they interact each other.

waltercool··on Why I don't discuss politics with friends
Discussing politics with friends and relatives is what makes you a moderate overall.

Otherwise you will grow up inside an echo chamber, far away from reality.

People talking about politics IRL makes you understand and reason other points of views. If you can't tolerate others views, then you are clearly a radical.

waltercool··on The "Take It Down" Act
The issue and reason about this law is, what happens when some teenager post naked photos of some ex girlgriend at internet.

While I don't care much about AI deepfakes, revenge porn can be very harmful to women, at the point of considering suicide.

This needs to be normalized at some point. While I don't like what Germany usually does, privacy about private photos/videos need to be respected

waltercool··on Norwegian fuel supplier refuses U.S. warships over Ukraine
It's their loss, literally. USA have ton of oil reserves.

I'm surprised that Norway, a "progressive" country with a huge welfare state, is only known for their oil extraction as wealth generation.

If they don't diversify their economy, they might face the same problem as Venezuela.

waltercool··on A son spent a year trying to save his father from conspiracy theories
Please don't post trashy articles from trashy media, government funded.

I know there are weirdos everywhere, but not much related to "Hacker News"

waltercool··on Introducing a terms of use and updated privacy notice for Firefox
Wht does Open Source needs any terms of use?

This is into the opposite direction about what "free open-source" means.

You get that software into your computer, you are entitled to free unrestricted use or modify in any way you want.

Except by the Firefox trademark of course.

waltercool··on Jeff Bezos exerts more control of Washington Post opinion
You are wrong here. You can't have free markets without personal liberty.

In the same way, personal liberties aren't a thing if are are unable to establish your own business

waltercool··on Claude 3.7 Sonnet and Claude Code
But there is no way to know if their claims are true either. Your inputs are processed into their servers, then you get a response. Whatever happens in the middle, only Anthropic knows. We don't even know of governments are actually pushing AI companies to enforce censorship or spying people, like we seen recently at UK government getting into Apple E2E encryption.

This criticism is valid for the business who wants to use AI to improve coding, code analysis or code review, documentation, emails, etc, but also for that individual who don't want to rely on 3rd party companies for AI usage.

waltercool··on Claude 3.7 Sonnet and Claude Code
Just like OpenAI or Grok, there is no transparency and no way for self-hosting purposes. Your input and confidential information can be collected for training purposes.

I just don't trust those companies when you use their servers. This is not a good approach to LLM democratization.

waltercool··on Big tech has disrupted the social contract
So, you are forcing people to accept something regardless of their opinion.

Isn't that the principle of authoritarianism?

Sure, you have vote, you may ot many not have freedoms depending of the country, but did that person accepted that social contract?

What is the difference with slavery? The social contract is basically slavery of born children to do whatever the "nation" says. This is not different than a slave and their owner.

waltercool··on Tariffs result in 10% laptop price hike in U.S. says Acer CEO
Progressive taxes are usually one of the worst and attacks the success, it limits poor people to become middle-class earners, or middle class to get wealthy.

Taxes are already a certain percent. It doesn't make any sense to tax more or less percent to people over certain amount of money.

At the end, poor people dont want to work because they will lose all benefits and get taxed. Middle class people don't want to earn more than certain amount because they will get taxed more.

Because progressive taxes are reliant on certain income (value) or wealth, inflation makes people to pay more taxes over time.

waltercool··on 'Honestly terrifying': Yosemite National Park is in chaos
Hey mods, how is this even helping to discourse?

I got some comments flagged for less than that.

waltercool··on 'Honestly terrifying': Yosemite National Park is in chaos
- Why is this being posted in Hacker News? This is technology related stuff.

- Do you realize Trump assumed less than a month ago?

Even when this government is trying to resolve the huge amount of federal waste, it is normal to wait couple of months until it stabilizes.

I remember when my country did a massive reform to the judiciary, it was entirely chaotic for few months.

Under a certain problem you can always hire more people and expect that resolves the issue, but this goes against efficiency as government doesn't have accountability (just check US debt!).

Resolving an efficiency issue is always difficult and chaotic until it stabilizes, governments around the world are known for never updating their processes. They don't even have a database for Social Security!

waltercool··on Why bother with privacy when I have nothing to hide? (2023)
Not sure what to hide, everyone knows that's a dude.
waltercool··on Elon Musk's terrifying vision for AI
AI is not intended to be used unattended.

It will get better over time, but it will never be perfect using the current paradigm (RNG and tensors)

waltercool··on Elon Musk's terrifying vision for AI
This article was written by a technological conservative for sure.

Just like Ted Kaczynski mistake, technology is there and nothing you or me can do to prevent anything.

I feel this is a right move overall.

Companies who use AI for customer support are really idiots, anyone can jailbreak AI and force them to give you absurd deals. I'm more than happy to see those lazy business go broke

waltercool··on The reason behind the TikTok ban
> It all started with Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack on Israel...

It's not. It started by Trump around 2020 trying to challenge China trade and being considered a propaganda asset.

Democrats later used the argument for their own benefit.

> You're pushing a conspiracy constructed in pursuit of a narrative.

I don't play conspiracies, I distrust everything proven, this includes conspiracy theories with arguments made from air.

I haven't said that was intentional. I blame their errors and mistakes.

> Maybe, just maybe, if people listened to the CDC and WHO we would have better outcomes.

When? They changed their narrative almost 6 times, while killing people with the mechanical respirators or keeping them stuck in-home with no physical activity.

The world already faced this kind of acts during the Spanish Flu, and CDC repeated the exact same mistakes of that time, considering we have better technology and information by that time.

The Wuhan lab research and blame to Chinese people was a conspiracy during COVID, and today we know how CDC was involved into the gain-of-function Wuhan Institute of Virology. Why did they negated everything when questioned?

Do you understand many Chinese people faced discrimination because of this? And this was well known project funded by the NIH.

waltercool··on US Park Service erases ‘transgender’ from website commemorating Stonewall riot
This is actually a good idea. I do use this website to read items according to my job and personal interest, and I have zero interest to see daily posts about the Trump administration or US politics et all. There are lot better websites for political debate like reddit, X, Fediverse, etc.

I can understand some technology/hacking posts may be related to politics, it's inevitably true, but this is not even that.

waltercool··on Half of CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service Laid Off
First of all, the way CDC works, it's just a board of directors from many pharmaceutical corporations. There are known conflicts of interest here.

Secondly, USA is considered a very unhealthy in comparison to Europe and other countries, while that's mosrly related to FDA, CDC also plays a role here by promoting drugs/vaccines in cases you only need a change of habits (like eating well to minimize flu severity)

Third, the way CDC dealt with COVID was unacceptable, their mixed messages about facemask, social distancing, herd immunity, reapiratory machines caused many people to die, and not because of the virus necessarily. This is a 15k people agency.

And worth to mention their controversy to require social media companies to censor posts about Wuhan Institute of Virology, when we all know today it was true, and CDC was partially responsible of the COVID 19 crisis. Also their censorship of scientists who disagreed with CDC conclusions, and some of them resulted to be factual.

After all of this, I do think it's fair to reform the CDC entirely. The economic impacts of their mistakes destroyed millions of business and caused many people unemployed. Even today 2025 you see few large companies struggling or going bankrupt because of their debt under COVID.

You may think we had to do that to prevent COVID spread, but all current data says the opposite, and many countries who never took hard measures had same or lower spread than US. CDC had to rectify all of their errors.

I have many friends who lost their jobs, VISA or green card process, because CDC was incompetent to act against a virus they previously knew, and recommended things they didn't encourage in the past (like paper/cloth masks to prevent spread of a viral virus).

waltercool··on Dinner at a North Korean Restaurant in Shanghai (2016)
How is this related to Hacker News?

And why posting an article of 2016?

waltercool··on Half of CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service Laid Off
How is this related to Hacker News overall? No idea. People keep posting politics here with no reason.

Anyways, this is a good thing if you want to clean up the mess from very long time, regardless of the party.

waltercool··on The 20 year old PSP can now connect to WPA2 WiFi Networks
This is good news

And finally non-political articles here lol

waltercool··on Reddit plans to lock some content behind a paywall this year, CEO says
Cool

They already paywall people behind a VPN, so don't care.

If you like Reddit but you complain about their decisions, I would recommend to use Lemmy instead.

waltercool··on LinkedIn is the worst social media I've ever seen
Linkedin used to be business. Today is just idiota trying to sound smart or business influencers.

Seems like LinkedIn boost people with less useful content ever seen.

There are ton of people (mostly Indians) who just copy good articles from internet and put into Linkedin without quoting the real authors.

waltercool··on Anyone can push updates to the doge.gov website

Apart from jokes, why appealing to victimization when you have internet trolls bombing your system?

Trolls will always troll, and it's idiotic to blame far-whatever stuff always. If you have an online platform, you should at least keep your site safe from trolls and spammers.

They should stop doing victim-hood things, recognize their site was attacked by internet trolls and fix that thing. Everyone who have online services (including myself) knows this is a common issue.

Our site have attacks from radical left comments instead, and we don't do this "oh no, political extremism is too far, hate is never accepted", instead, we just delete the comments, try our best to keep them out from our platform and that's it.

Trolls will post extremism from left, right, anarchist, porn, ads, whatever in order to disrupt services

waltercool··on US and UK refuse to sign AI safety declaration at summit
That is a good thing, if we want AI companies to be competitive enough.

If you add regulations, people will use other AI companies from countries without them. The only result of that would be losing the AI race.

You can see this at Huggingface top models, fine-tuned models are way more popular than official ones.

And this is also good considering most companies (even China) offer their models free to download and use locally. Democratizing AI is the good approach here.
