walamaking··on Coinbase says hackers bribed staff to steal customer data, demanding $20M ransom
Underappreciated comment.
walamaking··on Coinbase says hackers bribed staff to steal customer data, demanding $20M ransom
I always thought that the government ID photos were claimed to be wiped out immediately after document verification. Guess not.
walamaking··on Databricks in talks to acquire startup Neon for about $1B
Dumb question - how is this different from Snowflake?
walamaking··on My 16-month theanine self-experiment
Yeah surprised at all the comments saying this was a good experiment. Seems like a huge waste of time.
walamaking··on Tech’s flight from San Francisco is a relief to some advocates
What's the earthquake risk - are you close to any faults? That's always been my concern about the west coast.
walamaking··on Laid Off, Now What?
It is scary to think about 1) how much control CBP officers have over the fates of people entering the country especially on non-citizen statuses, and 2) how little they know about the rules affecting the latter.

E.g. I've heard of CBP officers not knowing that Canadians don't need to get a visa to enter the US. Also heard of CBP officers not knowing what "Massachusetts Institute of Technology" was on a student's F-1, and had to ask around to confirm that it was a legitimate school. And many more.

walamaking··on Remote work is reshaping San Francisco, as tech workers flee and rents fall
I wonder what impact will WFH have on getting promotions, and the likelihood of being laid off.
walamaking··on Feds say Yale discriminates against Asian, white applicants
Maybe universities should consider adding an optional box to specify if the applicant is willing to give up their potential seat for an affirmative action candidate. /s
walamaking··on Feds say Yale discriminates against Asian, white applicants
Measuring the nth degree from 1st-gen immigrants is a pretty poor proxy for "personality".
walamaking··on Fitful nightly sleep linked to chronic inflammation, hardened arteries
> CPAP ... is a band aid that the medical industry can make money on.

Incredibly uninformed.

walamaking··on Procrastination is about managing emotions, not time
Could you elaborate a bit on what this bio-emotive framework is? I checked out Dr. Douglas J. Tataryn's website but there's some paid content.
walamaking··on China's rising tech scene threatens US brain drain as ‘sea turtles’ return home
Probably why Baidu is such a terrible search engine.
walamaking··on The Adult Brain Does Grow New Neurons After All, Study Says
No, she used the good stuff (eyedrops).
walamaking··on Ask HN: Annual Bonus Time, Team's Not Happy
How's this advice good?
walamaking··on Harder programming questions do a worse job of predicting outcomes
Your experiences closely reflect mine for GCP. Some of the tools, although amazing in and of itself, often have some minor flaw that makes the user experience extremely inconvenient when you encounter it many times. The simplicity of the inconvenience only exaggerates the frustration.
walamaking··on Harder programming questions do a worse job of predicting outcomes
This company sounds terrible. You have to be hazed by all the other brogrammers at the end after doing 80-160 hrs of unpaid work, ridiculous:

walamaking··on Harder programming questions do a worse job of predicting outcomes
It wasn't clear at all in the article what it even meant when it referred to "final outcome".
walamaking··on WeWork Gets a Visit from Financial Reality
Do you mostly rely on brokers to look for commercial lease space?
walamaking··on Ask HN: What skills to acquire in 2019?
This is fantastic.
walamaking··on Bogle Sounds a Warning on Index Funds
Have you ever voted before? Assume 10 questions per company. Exposure to S&P 500 would mean 5,000 questions to answer. I don't know what the general stats are, but some proxies I've seen have 20+ questions.

Now, you will most likely be uninformed about most of the decisions that need to be made, which lead to your 2nd point about default options suggested by the index fund manager. But that just circles back to Bogle's points in the article. Also, with index fund costs at rock bottoms, good luck getting quality research into your voting options.

walamaking··on Ask HN: How to stop being cynical all the time?
I'm a bit confused and would love to hear you elaborate on your last paragraph.
walamaking··on Compare career levels across companies
5 months sound about just right to get past the honeymoon phase with a new company and see what's swept under the rug, and seems fine given he/she wasn't fired.
walamaking··on Brief aerobic exercise immediately enhances attention and perceptual speed
Please share, that's fascinating
walamaking··on Ask HN: Cheap places to live with a good intellectual atmosphere?
People I know who have left Singapore tend to say it's a suffocating little place though. Not to mention how conformist everyone is.
