waithuh··on Following pushback, Zoom says it won't use customer data to train AI models
Yeah, that explanation is just TLS.
waithuh··on Fedora Asahi Remix first impressions
I'm on mobile, too lazy to make it into a userscript.
waithuh··on Praising children for effort rather than ability (2021)
Well, unconditional love does originate from the favorable treats you mentioned, but its also the stories you had with them, your experiences, your ups and downs. Everything that made your life a little more worthwhile by simply standing by your side. Past a point, i believe it is impossible to end that relationship voluntarily, for both sides.

If it was only because for who they are, I dont think your love for them would continue nor evolve, it would be a simple materialistic jealousy, never making it past conditions (hence, unconditional love).

For any HN users struggling to read, blocking Google Fonts or Fontawesome absolutely demolishes the website.
waithuh··on Inactive Google Account Policy
The whole ruse is because people store so much data with Google and dont want to bother with backing it up/cant back it up easily (i dont know, i never used G that much)

Plus, email is your everything now. Its your login, its your invoice book.

See: crypto. Marvelous technology. Ruined in the public's eye because of the amount of scams in it. Those same scams were used as justification for strict KYC laws. Which did not do much to stop the fraudsters really, hurt legally operating investors' privacy instead.
waithuh··on Was Y Combinator worth it?
YC did so well because they never really asked for the qualifications other investors did and put an end to potential founders deciding that its not worth it/procrastinating

The market for data is shady. They can simply sign contracts with a few reputable "market intelligence" firms. I am also very sure that another VPN firm wouldnt mind being a proxy seller the browsing data in return for some comission.
waithuh··on If you travel to China, be aware of an exit ban
Baseless?
waithuh··on If you travel to China, be aware of an exit ban
To be fair, any U.S government agency can very well torture you as well, as they can do an oopsie and send you over to somewhere middle in the woods in Poland.

The term whataboutism is also not exactly stable when it comes to politics because nobody plays fairly.

waithuh··on If you travel to China, be aware of an exit ban
everyone is a bad guy.
waithuh··on I don't want to host services but I do
I'd flash custom firmware at that point. Be aware that i suck at networking however. Is there a compatibility/hardware-related issue?
waithuh··on Show HN: Get notified when sites update their terms of service
A painful remark about how slow the government is, haha. I really like the idea, however. Hope you make some spare bucks!

How easy is the question.

1. Browsing habits would hardly have an affect on the vast array of data to have an effect on ads presented to you, unless you care about your privacy. Its all target auidence and marketing (look at ExpressVPN or Surfshark. They all offer privacy but never follow up)

2. Their algorithms can avoid showing you ads derived from the VPN if it detects the usage of your actual IP

Thats fast execution! You should get into the law industry.

...why do that when you can simply sell though?

FYI their monthly subscription doesnt have multihop and thus offer an easier avenue for metadata matching

un-CF'ed websites? im speculating however
waithuh··on Blocked by Cloudflare
I was using my PiHole and switched to NextDNS to check. Didnt work.
waithuh··on Blocked by Cloudflare
No i totally get it, i can see myself doing the same compromise. I cant see myself recommending such practice, however.

here is one. I'm not on my PC so i used a privacy enchanted fork of Mobile Chrome. Enabled WebGL, WebRTC and WASM. Disabled all the fingerprint resistant features i could easily (the only thing messing with your systems could be the HTTP Referrer or Timezone)

Perhaps its a DNS-level issue? Does cloudflare use any google related APIs to provide the integrity check?

waithuh··on Blocked by Cloudflare
I dont get your second point. Two things can be harmful to the open web at once. CloudFlare is definitely not taking the right approach at it, which damages the open web alongside botnets. Also, botnet owners are for some reason extraordinarily nerdy and smart so they probably will find a way to fool CF every other month. Its a cat and mouse game for them while actively harming everyone else both with their botnets and the increased aggressiveness of CF caused by their incorrect solution

its time to pull out lynx again.
waithuh··on Blocked by Cloudflare
in my opinion, the admins do not enable the option to ban lower trust users (or set the threshold high), so CF tries over and over again instead of doing that.
waithuh··on Blocked by Cloudflare
I dont know which type of Firefox you use, but any reasonably tuned browser (in the privacy sense) fails your systems. I literally didnt have a single instance of passing them without handing over a pixel perfect fingerprint.
waithuh··on Blocked by Cloudflare
I seriously never get people that love CF (or any company for that matter). Praising 1.1.1.1, giving it free advertising. CF is basically handing over your website in return for some less work on your part. I get the advantages of it (like less engineer credits wasted, less server maintaining work and probably cost, faster) but actively giving it free PR just doesnt fit right with me. Pay your bucks and sit. They are a Big Tech company, they dont need your prayers.
waithuh··on Blocked by Cloudflare
Maybe back when standarts where on shaky ground and different versions of the same content was made? I too cant see the performance advantage of it. Deprioritizing less mainstream browsers to mess with the nerds?
waithuh··on Blocked by Cloudflare
Of course they are. Thats the whole point of the 'Integrity Check'. Besides, almost every website you visit collects your fingerprint nowadays.

waithuh··on The antitrust trial against Google is starting in September
ah, yeah i kind of consider that as data selling anyways. Not outright selling, you are right there. Selling in bulk would be dumb for these companies when they have ad networks in place, though. Its like the DRM for ads.
