wadetandy··on Kindness is Underrated
A separate but related issue I've sometimes run into in team interactions like those described (particularly in github issue discussions and other asynchronous text communications) is people mistaking kindness or inquiry for passive aggressive demands or mandate.

Something like "is there a reason you chose to do it that way instead of this other way that we have done things in the past?" might be interpreted as "This is wrong. Why didn't you do it the way I did it the last time I did something similar to this!? Please throw out what you've done and re-implement it my way."

This might have something to do with the assumption that the OP mentions: that everyone is aggressive and blunt by default, and this is just a passive aggressive form of the same. If this wasn't the norm, perhaps this subtlety wouldn't go unnoticed.

I work for a very large company that relies on a fork (with contributions back upstream) of SQLite for a majority of its massive enterprise SOA. It is not just unpaid volunteers keeping that project going.

He did. It was called Bitcoin
wadetandy··on GMail will now always show images by default
Not necessarily 100% a good thing for users. We don't know whether the images are pulled and cached by Google when the email hits their servers (which would cause 100% open rate from the perspective of the marketers) or wether it happens when the user opens it for the first time (in which case they can still track openings).

If it is the latter, users can still be tracked. If the former, legitimate uses that help users will now be blocked. Github, for example, uses a tracking dot to mark a notification as read if you read it via email, which means you don't get double notified on the Github UI and via email.

wadetandy··on Smartphone PIN revealed by camera and microphone
But these apps shouldn't be running/accessing those devices when your phone is locked. If the apps can manage to get around that permissioning issue then they can control a lot of things directly, most likely, and don't need your PIN for much.

One of my biggest questions/objections is about the battery life issue. They claim that this will run out juice every 2 years or so and that the battery cannot be replaced, so I'll just need to buy a new one. $100 every two years for this device seems like a pretty big expense, as opposed to $100 one time.

Yeah, pretty easy to just store all cards in the app and switch out the infrequently used cards for things like loyalty programs when you actually need them.
wadetandy··on Smartphone PIN revealed by camera and microphone
It seems to me that if an attacker can get access to your microphone and camera, you have way bigger problems and they don't need your PIN at all.
wadetandy··on Engineer's Solution: Neutral Redistricting so Reelection is Less Assured
That is still different than voting for a party. In proportional representation you would cast your ballot for e.g. The Democratic Party. If they got 54% of the vote, they would get to then appoint 54% of the representation for that district. In this way, a very heavily Tea Party district would still have representation for the democratic minority, just less.

wadetandy··on Open-plan offices make employees less productive, less happy, and more sick
I work for a large company with an open office plan. We have many different types of employees, from software developers to sales folks to editors and writers. While there is the occasional complaint about a loud coworker or something, I generally very much enjoy the atmosphere, and I hear similar comments from my colleagues.

One of the things that makes our implementation very effective is that everyone from the CEO to the interns sit at the same desks and share the same environment. The culture is very open and everyone is encouraged to walk up to anyone and ask them a question or ten, of they have them. This collaborative environment more than makes up for the occasional loss in individual employee productivity, in my opinion.

It probably also helps that we are an instant message culture as opposed to a phone conversation one, which cuts down on a lot of the noise distraction as well.

Except that merchant can't switch to the plan if they process that much, since it is limited to merchants under $250,000/year.

wadetandy··on WordPress 3.2 Released
I upgraded last night and it promptly crashed my site and made it so nothing would load. Be careful of any plugins using legacy features, as this newest version gets rid of many of them. Based on error messages in the log files, I removed any plugins that were referenced and the site got back up and running.

The very fact that I found this on HN while procrastinating my project for today means I probably shouldn't be allowed in the Cult.
