But also iirc; Stargate was well along before trumps horse/pony show also no idea how much is still necessary to purchase.
If our testing framework is in Python; writing a wrapper to code tests for your feature in Perl because you're more comfortable with it is the Wrong way to do it imo.
But if writing a FluentD plugin in Ruby solves a significant problem in the same infra; the additional language could be worth it.
Everything is about tradeoffs.
You aren't paying per request/GPU access, CCP is.
As an aside; if you do the mapping system wide - it's useful everywhere - caps lock is useless everywhere, and Escape is marginally usefull in general desktop usage. I do ctrl-a-ctrl-a tmux 100x/day to swap panes; and ctrl-u in terminal countless times. Minimizing finger movement on all the little things is valuable. That said; I've also become a fan of home row mods also.
VSCode may be seen as a larger attack vector due to its popularity; but maybe not as many won't use the SSH agent? It's also fairly common sense that you should never run it to mount on a production resource; but again, you shouldn't be able to ssh into a production machine anyway.
Today; it works ~perfectly for TV control/Alarm setting - I can't think of it not working first try in the last month or so for me. Maybe more consistent than prior?
The rollout was simply borked from the PM/Decision making side.
Seems like they're approaching parity (finally) months and months later (alarms/tv control work at least now), but losing basic oft-used functionality is a serious fumble.
> 1- Things breaking seemingly randomly
This is/has always been the kicker; especially with security updates. If you're comfortable switching; just reinstalling in place is the 99% hammer solution to get back and running imo, and isn't that bad as a last-resort.
Author is both complaining about being railroaded and about being given choices paragraphs apart.
> All in all, a meaningless chapter in a meaningless story.
Author is self aware.
IIRC, This is mostly what Facebook did after the 2016 election; put together a non affiliated board and made sure it was populated by all sides - Facebook itself had no/minimal control over what said board did/decided; but all decisions were public.
Zuck just gave in to 'community moderation' instead because "actual solutions" are considered a negative in today's political climate.
there is a difference between 'US Citizen having access to information' and 'Hostile Foreign Govt having Direct Push Access for news to ~70% of a generation of Americans as they go from puberty to voting age'. US isn't discussing a Great Firewall, the information will still be available, it just won't be as easy for a generation to be indoctrinated (well, by a foreign govt instead of our own* at least. Theoretically our govt has our interests at heart more than 'hostile foreign power' - but that's a different fight we need to have)
Honestly in open source I'd argue it's not. If an OSS project has significant usage, if BDFL struggles/etc - community forks can put the project back on pace. NeoVim is the classic (successful) example that gave us a great alternative while also nudging the BDFL into the modern age.
> I'm not sure how I can survive in the US once I can no longer find companies willing to hire me
My plan is simple: Retire. Avoid that 1m house when possible.
> I have no idea how my kids are going to make it
Same boat here, but I'm less concerned insofaras I'm doing everything I can to keep as many options/opportunities open to my kids as possible. This honestly significantly dampens the 'retire' plan; but what can you do? My parents would have no idea what I do if I tried to explain it; I expect the world to shift similarly by the time my kids are working. The goal is simply to give every advantage I can and keep as many doors open as possible.
TBF; The CCP passed laws that likely make it illegal for TikTok to sell/export that kind of information (the algo). They can't divest without also neutering the sticking power of the service.
There is no credible argument that the CCP doesn't directly control the alg as it's actively being used for just that in tawain/etc.
Does the US really want a (hostile?) foreign govt to have clear direct access to influence 170m americans, an entire generation - completely unfettered? Incredible national security implications. Bot farms can influence X/Meta/etc, but they can be at least be fought. TikTok itself is the influence engine as currently constructed.
Still shit to lock him out after he pulled the site down.
My guess being OP was probably running the service for months under-the-radar via scraping prior, and they didn't notice him until he requested the token to help clean up his data. Else they punished him before* he actually did anything wrong? yea, just smells.
As I've spent weeks of my life getting kernel modules to build/sign/release properly in a secure boot environment :D
I honestly love this. I want to hang out at a bar and get sloshed with you; maybe after hours at a conference. I legitimately think we'd be best buds.
As an aside though - 95% of PC users generally just don't care as long as ItWorks and its fun. It's easy to get mired in the minutia of the systems (technical and societal) instead of thinking about how it interacts with the average person.
https://gg.deals/games/xbox-game-pass-games-list/
Currently if I'm filtering right; 553 games are 'free' under Game Pass Ultimate currently, 223 are available on PC. ~42%. That's not great; but not horrible either.
Full Game Pass is 331,461 titles currently, and 240,596 installable on PC; so a bit better ratio.
TBF; it's net the same thing. People just need it to be hard enough that it (generally) doesn't ruin your game.
You're making the same logical argument people have made against wearing (and then mandating) seat belts, and in more recent times vaccines. It's a sad slope that's led to me being told over Christmas dinner that murder being illegal is stupid because people still kill. He was serious. Boggles the mind.
