w00kie··on Entering Public Beta
This was super simple and worked like a charm!
w00kie··on Using imagemagick, awk and kmeans to find dominant colors in images
I was expecting a step by step decomposition of the process. I'm a bit disappointed.
w00kie··on Telegram Bot Platform
> Not sure what people would have thought at the time if they could not send SMS to other mobile carriers.

Then you would have loved Japan before 2006. SMS was not a "thing" (although available hidden in the interface) and the phones would default to email.

w00kie··on Japan Bicycle Parking Technology [video]
I know a couple in Tokyo: one in Shinagawa (the Danny Choo one), one in Roppongi. The one is this video is a different one.

This is a company that makes such systems: http://cycle-tree.jp/ They have more examples of installations.

w00kie··on Norwegian butter crisis (2011)
Frankly, it feels like we've had butter shortage for the past 5 years. It's ridiculous...
w00kie··on Stripe enters Asia with Japan beta launch
Sounds super expensive.

It depends on the bank. Mine gives me 5 free transfers per month and then it's 300¥ per transfer after that.

> it's difficult for me to see exactly where it would make my life easier or better

As a shopper it won't. Stripe is not targeted at shoppers but at website developers who want to implement credit card payments in a sane and easy way.

As a user, you should not care whether the website is using Stripe or not (although their UX is usually nicer by default and their development guidelines help the implementation be more secure). The added value to you is that it is easy for the developer to implement credit card payments the right/secure way, therefore giving you more payment options.

I would argue that you are usually covered by fraud insurance by default when paying with your credit which is probably not true of bank transfers.

w00kie··on Japanese Food Models, Yesterday and Today
It reminds me of the original iPod backplate that was hand polished by a little Japanese company operating in a shack in rural Niigata, Japan -> http://color-metals.com/catalog/mirror-polish-ipod/

There are a lot of these small craftsmen in Japan, specially in metal working, supplying parts notably for aeronautics and space industries. For example, the nose of every shinkansen bullet train is hand hammered to shape: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/03...

Yeah, I had to cheat on that part and check out the file content. No way I'm running it without looking.

w00kie··on Earthquake early-warning system gave 10-second alert before Napa quake felt
In Japan, all phones (even the iPhone) are setup to emit a loud alarm sound when an earthquake warning is sent, whether your phone is on manner mode or not. The alarm sound is very distinctive and the same for all phones as well as all TV channels.

w00kie··on Japanese Toilets: The Future Called 30 Years Ago
All Japanese models have a pressure sensor built into the seat so that no water comes out unless someone is actually sitting on the toilet.
w00kie··on User-Agent detection, history and checklist
It was 1999, I was a freshman at university, doing my first internship at a small hosting company. I was asked to develop a live web analytics tool that the company could offer to their customers. I made a 1px transparent image in PHP that logged the IP, referrer, user-agent, etc. in mySQL and showed the live stats in a nice table in the backend with the list of 50 last visitors.

This was one of my first projects in PHP and I naively did not know about never trusting user input and htmlentities().

Queue a couple of weeks later, I get a frantic call from my manager in the middle of the night. One of the customers is making a huge scene that someone hacked his website to put pornography on it. It turns out someone had changed their user-agent to <img src="http://goatse.cx/hello.jpg"> and visited one of our websites...

w00kie··on Nginx Plus
Do we actually know if this is a different closed source branch with all these features baked in the app itself or is it a service offering bundling other systems/scripts into a nice platform on top of everyday nginx? (i.e. can be re-created with the proper recipe, just lacking the support)
w00kie··on Where did all the HTTP referrers go?
Thanks for the info, I was not aware of this meta tag. My blog is all HTTPS (with SPDY) and I added content="origin" to all visitor facing pages, leaving the admin pages dark.
w00kie··on Why aren't we all using Japanese toilets?
The water comes out of a little nozzle on the end of a wand that extends only when used. While you do your number 1 or 2, the wand is retracted inside the toilet seat (not bowl, above the bowl). Plus, after spraying, the nozzle will auto-clean itself before retracting.
w00kie··on Buddhist monk's brain produces highest reported level of gamma waves
I first misread the HN link's title as "gamma rays" and thought a radioactive monk sounded awesome! Then I read the actual article, I am disappoint...
w00kie··on I can't keep up
So you posted a "completely random-topic blog posts where [you ] come to some conclusion, which conveniently allows [you] to segue into a quick little pimping out of [your] app, startup, or whatever"?
