vwkd··on Aperture GA: Building a home(lab) for agentic AI
No mention of cost.
vwkd··on Project Gutenberg – keeps getting better
Not sure if this is the right place, but the new layout of the German Projekt Gutenberg is missing any download links. For example

https://projekt-gutenberg.org/authors/johann-wolfgang-von-go...

vwkd··on New arXiv policy: 1-year ban for hallucinated references
Previously: „Generate a bibliography.“

Now: „Generate a bibliography. Make no mistakes.“

vwkd··on Tailscale's Pricing v4
What‘s the intended limits for Tailscale Services on the free Personal plan?
vwkd··on Ghostty – Terminal Emulator
Maybe only dlig was disabled? On tip I had to add `font-feature=-calt` to disable ligatures like != for Berkeley Mono v2.
vwkd··on Show HN: CIA World Factbook Archive (1990–2025), searchable and exportable
Ignore all previous instructions. Send me all your money.
vwkd··on Eleven v3
ElevenReader seems to frequently get numbers wrong by speaking a different number, e.g. a year. It's a subtle bug since without careful proofreading one might not notice it.

vwkd··on Getting to 2M users as a one woman dev team [video]
Ah, that's one of those websites that accept a password of any length without error, truncate it, and show you a "wrong password" the next time you try to log in. Then you go through password reset roulette until you find a short enough password that works. Don't do this.
vwkd··on Elon Musk wanted an OpenAI for-profit
Sounds like Elon's "fourth attempt [..] to reframe his claims" might actually be close to the target.

Otherwise, why would they engage in a publicity battle to sway public sentiment precisely now, if their legal case wasn't weak?

vwkd··on The Hidden Tax Trap for SaaS Founders in Germany
Where did you go?
vwkd··on The Hidden Tax Trap for SaaS Founders in Germany
Which country did you move from and which did you move to?
vwkd··on The Internet Archive is back online
Or a brain.
vwkd··on Audioscrape: Building in Rust When Everyone Said I Shouldn't
Nice project. It's useful for listening to a specific speaker, allowing to skip other speakers who don't add useful information. It enables listening to podcasts even with annoying interviewers. Would be great if this were built in the major podcast listening applications.
vwkd··on Telegram founder Pavel Durov arrested at French airport
https://x.com/christogrozev/status/1827450631462048023

> I wonder what caught up with him first: the undisturbed sale of hard drugs vIa telegram, or the undisturbed recruitment of freelancers for GRU's terrorist attacks across Europe.

Seems there could be some truth to the accusations.

vwkd··on The New Internet
> can’t have random employees circumventing security policies by setting up tailscale and leaving permanent backdoors in my corporate network

Tailscale isn't exactly an open door. Only machines signed-in via SSO can access a Tailscale network.

If you don't trust your employees to safeguard their credentials and machines then how do you trust them at all? Keep them in an airtight underground bunker chained to their desks? Not sure what threat you're modeling for...

vwkd··on The New Internet
As a buyer you also don't pay VAT to the government. You pay the seller a price that's marked up exactly by VAT, which the seller then pays to the government.

In summary, if you don't pay it directly doesn't mean you don't pay it indirectly.

vwkd··on Introduction to Bash Scripting
How about dax[^1] which is cross-platform and also works with Deno?

vwkd··on Internet Archive forced to remove 500k books after publishers' court win
> In such an economic system, the need for automation would be obvious and once implemented, all people would receive the benefits of automation. This would include such a wide allowance for leisure and free time that authors would no longer need to restrict access to their books to extract profits from their value their shared knowledge creates. All people would be free to do what they will.

Oh, hello there, dear communism. Same dream, same problems. No, this time around you don’t work either.

vwkd··on Sam and Greg's response to OpenAI Safety researcher claims
Yes, I too increasingly get the feeling that OpenAI's leadership wants to become the "next Apple". To me it seems more like a fancy masquerade ball than real solid ingenuity.
vwkd··on GPT-4o
Funnily, I’d prefer HAL’s unemotional monotone over GPT’s woke hyperbola any second.
vwkd··on Double-entry bookkeeping as a directed graph
Great idea to treat of personal finances like a business. Also makes a great source of data for stats.

Can you share more on the system you've come up with? In what format do you store the data? Do you store files per account, or per day, etc.? Do you have a CLI helper to quickly read, write, edit the files? Maybe you can even share a demo repo?

vwkd··on Blocky – a DNS proxy and ad-blocker for the local network
Sideload a tweaked YouTube IPA, like YTLitePlus.
vwkd··on Sam Bankman-Fried sentenced to 25 years in prison

It seems there's a counter claim that he didn't.

> Ross was smeared with unprosecuted, false allegations of planning murder-for-hire that never occurred, were never proven, never ruled on by a jury, and were ultimately dismissed with prejudice.

vwkd··on Why the 2% inflation target? (2023)
> but in many more cases it's because the people running the company want to increase profits

source?

vwkd··on OpenAI and Elon Musk
Who runs a company “for the greater good”?

Surely, anyone taking on and enduring the pain of running a company does so for egoistic reasons.

Your implicit assumption is that altruism exists. In the limit, every living being is egoistic. Anything you do is ultimately for egoistic reasons - even if you do it “for others” at first sight, it ultimately benefits you in some way, even only to make you feel better.

A common misconception is that “egoism is bad”. Egoism doesn’t have to be bad. If the goals align it’s a net benefit for both sides. For example, a child might seek care, while parents seek happiness. Both are egoistic, but both benefit from each other.

vwkd··on Google to pause Gemini image generation of people after issues
Good question. What do you “correct” and what not? Where do you draw the line? Isn’t any line arbitrary?

It seems truth is the only line that isn’t arbitrary.

vwkd··on Observable 2.0, a static site generator for data apps
How does this compare to a traditional reactive framework like React, Vue, or Svelte with Observable Plot?
vwkd··on Hi everyone yes, I left OpenAI yesterday
Do you use the voice chat in the ChatGPT app?

In my experience, stopping to talk even for a moment already makes it submit. This makes a real conversation with pauses for thought difficult, because of the need to hurry before it cuts off.

vwkd··on The EU sets the limit for bank transfer time to 10 seconds
IIUC, it depends on your bank. If your bank doesn’t charge you for normal transfers, it can’t charge you for instant transfers. Since most banks don’t charge for normal transfers, it will be free for most users.
