vvilliamperez··on Flat-to-curved screens have an identity crisis
From what I know, e-ink tech is and has been very feasible, but is on hold since it's under patent. The company that holds the patent is notoriously slow to reach any licensing deals in a timely fashion to bring a product to market. Not to mention their exorbitant licensing fees. The end product turns out to be to expensive to market.

This is the kind of niche community that brings joy. Thanks!
vvilliamperez··on ErgodoxE EZ – an ergonomic keyboard with open source firmware
I've had an Ergodox EZ for 4 years and it's awesome. Once you learn to type on it and take advantage of the multitude of macros, it's almost telepathic.

But I end up using an inexpensive bluetooth keyboard most of the time because I work between a macbook (that doesn't like USB-A without a dock or dongle) and a windows desktop.

I've thought about getting a USB switcher hub or a bluetooth dongle for the ergodox, but at that point I'm adding way too much bulk to my desk or bag if I decide to travel with it. I'm already pushing my luck when I try fitting it in my carry-on suitcase.

I wish there was a bluetooth Ergodox with MX low profile keyswitches+caps.

Rings of space debris coalesce into small celestial bodies over time. That's one theory of how moons form.

Back in the days of dial-up https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Download_Accelerator_Plus used to help a bunch too.

Square or portrait aspect monitors rock for most computer work that's not media. Give it a try sometime.
vvilliamperez··on Earn.com will ruin email if it succeeds (2018)
Sounds like the user intentionally set up Earn instead of unsubscribing to hundreds of newsletters. Seems like it's working just fine.
vvilliamperez··on FDA Approves First Covid-19 Vaccine
Like someone else mentioned, I think the core issue is "Should the government have the right to mandate medical procedures?" In my mind, I'm vaccinated, so what does it matter to me if others are not?

vvilliamperez··on Police have been quitting in droves in the last year
For people against the concept of police, what do you see replacing it? Privatized security forces? Community members/ local militia? A more limited public police force? National guard?
vvilliamperez··on Mark Cuban-backed banking app Dave to go public in $4 bln SPAC merger
I used it a bit back in college to avoid overdrafts. When living with no income and under 1k in the bank, it was pretty useful.

It would predict automatic payments, and allow you to take out a small loan to cover the payment, avoiding about $35 in overdraft fees. And the best part was the payment back was 0% interest, only you couldn't use the service again until you paid Dave back.

I'm sure they got their money's worth from banking data after I left it signed in for 5 years. Eventually I deleted my account and unlinked my bank.

vvilliamperez··on Firefox Release 89.0
I'm not familiar with how Firefox UI works. Would it require a non-trivial amount of work to maintain a compact theme? I'm assuming it's some form of style sheet and they share assets like icons.
vvilliamperez··on Firefox Release 89.0
I liked the UI changes, except that they removed Compact Mode due to "Low Engagement" Why is that even a metric for a browser UI? Are they putting ads in the settings?

It's now hidden by this bool in about:config, `preference browser.compactmode.show `

vvilliamperez··on How does Startups pay salaries when they raise only 125k USD?
Salaries aren't paid in lump sum. You expect more funding or revenue by that point. YC investing also creates buzz for other investors so it's easier to get more people on board. "We are a YC backed company, asking for 400k series A"

There's also Google pools/proxies. https://searx.me/ works pretty well and has public instances.
vvilliamperez··on The Rise and Fall of Pret a Manger
I saw these all over New York in Christmas 2019. Ended up grabbing a bite to eat and was pretty impressed with the food. Definitely fills a market gap for fast, small, semi-healthy food. No oversized combo meals there.
vvilliamperez··on Ask HN: Have you ever gone without a computer or phone for an extended period?
Computer no, but I've had gaps in phones spanning almost a year each. It ended up being quite the inconvenience for others even though I could make due with desktop SMS/Calling apps.
