vulcan01··on How many billions of transistors in an iPhone processor?
> there was a web-based game where you did exactly that

This is the one I played some time ago: https://nandgame.com/

vulcan01··on Linux on a MacBook Pro (M1 Pro): How Good Is Asahi Now?
My understanding is that the chosen page size is optimal for the M-series integrated memory.
vulcan01··on “I want to use this tactically vs. GOOG/AAPL” (2022)
In addition to sibling, FOIA is only for the government (and probably work that government contractors do that's related to their contract, which this isn't).
vulcan01··on Linear code is more readable
This is not a constructive comment. I just want to say that I appreciate this joke, it's pretty funny.
vulcan01··on Hypervisor from Scratch (2022)
The author claims that the concepts are platform-independent and that they give examples for Linux when needed. I don't know enough about the topic to know if that's sufficient.

vulcan01··on Microsoft to kill off third-party printer drivers in Windows
Costco does not sell printers that require subscriptions. I believe they get custom models from the manufacturer.

Also, the exercise equipment they sell don't require an internet account for basic functionality, and I believe this goes for the TVs sold at Costco as well.

vulcan01··on Privacy Nightmare on Wheels’: Every Car Brand Reviewed by Mozilla
The question is, why are they collecting it in the first place?
vulcan01··on Maybe Rust isn’t a good tool for massively concurrent, userspace software
> an OS that used channels

I'm very curious; what OS is this?

vulcan01··on Ask HN: Does Instagram suspend accounts just to get their phone numbers?
The only times Discord has asked for my phone number (and I have many alts) is when a server specifically says that only people who have added a phone number to their account can join. This is off by default.
vulcan01··on Chandrayaan-3 Soft-landing [video]
I tend to consider the aid as reparations for the massive amounts of theft by the British East India Company and the British Raj.
vulcan01··on Abbrev: A hidden Ruby gem
GDB is one software I use a lot that has this feature. You can abbreviate break, print, delete, and others.

For conflicts (does 'd' refer to delete or disable?) the more commonly used command is usually what the abbreviation will expand to (so GDB accepts 'd' for "delete").

vulcan01··on China’s property giant Evergrande files for bankruptcy protection in Manhattan
I don't know if they get paid for it, but it is apparently NY law.

vulcan01··on Fastest branchless binary search
In debug mode, integer overflow panics. In release mode, overflow does occur; that's why checked_add and friends exist.
vulcan01··on CIQ, Oracle, SUSE Create Open Enterprise Linux Association
I started a 501(c)(3) with some friends. It didn't require broad public support, just that we intended to grow to such a point.

(I'm not sure exactly what the current support is like; I left the board over a year ago. I think it's around 10 folks that donate somewhat regularly.)

Certainly the political activity provision of 501(c)(6)s are beneficial for this association, and I guess they'd have more scrutiny as three large companies instead of a few high schoolers.

vulcan01··on What comes after Zoom? (2020)
I think the GP is referring to the video quality with Discord Nitro (their subscription service), which is not bad.
vulcan01··on Help the Library of Congress create games to improve public knowledge of civics
I remember using iCivics in middle school (yes, I'm young); I found them to be decently fun and educational at the time. https://www.icivics.org/

I think "Win the White House" was the game I enjoyed the most.

vulcan01··on Better ways to read Hacker News
Yeah, I use Stylus. My stylesheet is here: https://gist.github.com/PerpetualCreativity/68ea74ad2fb761d1...
vulcan01··on Better ways to read Hacker News
I just use this site, plus a custom stylesheet. It took me around 2 hours to write it (and occasional updates) but it works for me. Almost every important thing on the page has a descriptive class name, so it's not too hard.

A benefit is that you can actually reply from here.

vulcan01··on Apple Vision Pro developer kit
A few years back, Lowe's tested their "Hologram Experience" using Microsoft's Hololens. I think it was only for kitchen remodeling.

vulcan01··on Ask HN: When will HN add ActivityPub?
I think this question would be best answered by dang: hn@ycombinator.com

(also in the footer, "Contact")

vulcan01··on Sidebery – A Firefox extension for managing tabs and bookmarks in sidebar
> My Attention is directed

Sidebery has tab groups, which you can then fold. Also has panels, which are basically full-size permanent tab groups (that can be linked to containers).

> Less RAM

It also lets one enable tab unloading for folded tabs. And you can middle-click on a panel to unload all the tabs in it.

vulcan01··on Brazil's Jair Bolsonaro is barred from office until 2030
You forgot to add your "[1]" footnote, but based on your description the equivalent would probably be the US's Government Accountability Office.
vulcan01··on Site claims to sell upvotes on Hacker News
Click-through rate optimizes for clickbait titles and controversial topics. Comment volume optimizes for controversial topics as well, since people would be arguing in the comments in those. It also optimizes for comments that don't add value.
vulcan01··on Delta flight lands in Charlotte without front landing gear
I don't know what model of plane this is, but I was watching a Real Engineering video on the Boeing 787. He said that some planes have a third engine for generating electricity (the APU) and the exhaust for that is at the tip of the tail.

Maybe there are concerns about potentially damaging the APU?

vulcan01··on Even more hindsight on Vim, Helix and Kakoune
My understanding is that the devs think that AI-assistance should be plugins, as there's no open spec for communication with Copilot and others:

https://github.com/helix-editor/helix/discussions/4037#discu...

And the plugin system is not done/released yet.

vulcan01··on Even more hindsight on Vim, Helix and Kakoune
There are default keybinds for copy/paste to system clipboard, but as the parent said, tabs are a work in progress.
vulcan01··on OpenGL 3.1 on Asahi Linux
There is a recovery partition (in fact, it's used when installing Asahi) but I don't think it's possible to update the firmware from there. Boot CD might work. You could try asking on r/AsahiLinux.
vulcan01··on OpenGL 3.1 on Asahi Linux
Yes, that's right; I generally pop back in to macOS every so often to check for OS updates (which update the firmware as well - no way to just update the firmware).
vulcan01··on I didn’t learn Unix by reading all the manpages (2022)
This matches what I see using less as manpager and every terminal I have installed on MacOS (Apple Terminal, kitty, alacritty+Tmux, iTerm).
vulcan01··on I didn’t learn Unix by reading all the manpages (2022)
Yes. A few seconds of thinking does the trick.

"file hierarchy" - Something to do with my file organization?

"walk" - Most programmers are familiar with trees.

Oh, we are walking through the file tree!
