vukk··on Just the Facts: S&P's $2 Trillion Mistake
I recommend reading Friedman's Free to Choose after reading The Shock Doctrine http://www.amazon.com/Free-Choose-Statement-Milton-Friedman/... (Friedman is the guy that Naomi Klein blames on the book)
vukk··on Poll: Have you read SICP?
No, but I plan to read HtDP http://htdp.org
vukk··on Once Greece goes...
Just because things are different, doesn't mean that certain analogies couldn't be useful.

I would argue that if you are aware that a person is not a nation and vice versa, that there are some traps on the way, this analogy is useful indeed.

vukk··on Scala on LLVM
No lightweight threads, one has to resort to an evented approach (and lose the fault tolerance etc. afaik).

vukk··on Germany to be nuclear-free by 2022
Taz seems to be a rather leftist newspaper, wouldn't take it at face value.
vukk··on Germany to be nuclear-free by 2022
Also, the swedes reversed their decision few years ago. Nowdays while they are not increasing nor decreasing nuclear power, they are OK with replacing the old reactors.
vukk··on In Lisp, should lists be replaced with trees?
http://vimeo.com/6624203 Conc lists as video. Titled Organizing Functional Code for Parallel Execution; or, foldl and foldr Considered Slightly Harmful (Guy Steele)
vukk··on FBI seized PokerStars.com, FullTiltPoker.com, UB.com,... domain names
! You are correct, isnic allows to register two-letter domains :) It is probably better to register there anyway than with some random registrars.
vukk··on FBI seized PokerStars.com, FullTiltPoker.com, UB.com,... domain names
I tried to register a two-letter domain with few registrars found by googling: it seems that one isn't allowed to register a two-letter .is domain anymore; a very common policy in domain names.
vukk··on New collision-detection technology used in Little Big Planet, GTA IV and others
Game and hack the system by writing good articles? http://xkcd.com/810/ :)
vukk··on Ask HN: How to stave off decline of HN?
I think this is indeed a low hanging fruit. Upvoting should have some negative side effect or limit that makes you think for a split second if you really want to do it.

In articles: personally I only upvote only those articles that I really want to see in my "saved stories".

So one might make voting comments clutter something for the voter and I think that most hackers like to keep things beautiful, clean and searchable if possible. Might work better for articles than comments though.

vukk··on AT&T has a fiberoptic splitter copying our data to NSA
They _need_ to make some version of that bird picture into a t-shirt.
vukk··on Poll: Hacker News User Age
The last one had 21-25 group hidden, only those who had showdead on could vote it...
vukk··on Video of reactor 1 at Fukushima plant
"... that's not exactly the best case is it?"

You could think about the outer building as keeping the rain out, and possibly aeroplanes to some extent. It is not the critical last defence against stuff happening in the reactor, the containment building is. You can bet that the japanese army is keeping any possible threats out of there.

vukk··on Poll: Do You Use the HN Showdead Feature
That's great, if you have the time to filter it all. I use HN because it takes way less time than checking all those RSS feeds. I might miss interesting things, but those are beyond the point of diminishing returns. If it saves my time, I'm happy.

Filtering in HN has it's problems, but I don't turn off the spam filter for few false positives in email either.

vukk··on Milton Friedman's Free To Choose
Well probably the people who are interested on this know the name Milton Friedman very well, but I agree that for others an about page would be nice.

Just FYI: this is a television series from Friedmans book "Free to Choose", a classic book that advocates laissez-faire politics (free markets). Highly recommanded if you are interested in economics.

EDIT: Actually I checked and it seems that the book was written after the first TV-series, my bad.

vukk··on Visa.com Now Also Down Under DDoS
I wonder why they don't get payment gateway IP's from shops, surely some of them work in them, and DDOS those. Maybe too much heat because Visa and MasterCard would lose millions per day and people would lose the ability to pay with their cards?

vukk··on How your data gets compromised in an IaaS cloud: Vendor tells all
Since we are not directly accessing the HDD, couldn't the virtualization layer say if(disk block not written before) return 0; and thus the customer wouldn't have to worry? Or is this too inefficient?
vukk··on The Age of Music Piracy Is Officially Over
iTunes sells AAC, not MP3, as far as I know. My _opinion_ is that 128kbps AAC is about the same quality as MP3@V2.
vukk··on Eliminating Political Parties
That is an issue in many voting systems, not just winner takes all. There's a fix for that too, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_transferable_vote

EDIT: STV would also take power from political parties in multi-party systems, since people can vote for different candidates in different parties, and list the preferred party as the last choice.

vukk··on A statically typed language I'd actually want to use
Especially as the upcoming BitC language seems to have sound _and_ complete type inference http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BitC
vukk··on HN-Books
There is going to be a lot of books in there, so _filtering_ is a must, sorting just isn't enough.

EDIT: I mean this for "Noob ... Expert" selection. Also simple tags would probably be better than those "How to xx some xx"

vukk··on Land of Lisp: Learn to Program in Lisp, One Game at a Time
Since the author is Conrad, the well balanced human, and the book is named LoL, does it show how to implement the first Lands of Lore? :) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lands_of_Lore:_The_Throne_of_Ch...
