vsuperpower2021··on California DMV puts 42M car titles on blockchain to fight fraud
California DMV is notoriously bad even outside of California. This could either lessen the pain a bit, or cause immense human suffering.

>The project, in collaboration with tech company Oxhead Alpha on Ava Labs' Avalanche blockchain, will allow California's more than 39 million residents to claim their vehicle titles through a mobile app, the first such move in the United States.

I'm not sure I'd download a car. It seems like you're relying on the app to verify you, which is fine, but I don't see how any of this works more than a normal database. Why even write an article on technology if you don't have any information or technical expertise?

vsuperpower2021··on Hosting the Olympics has become financially untenable, economists say
Counterpoint: The Olympics are not cool and I'd rather have the money.
vsuperpower2021··on Fair Chess and Simultaneous Games
The statement still applies even if you found one thing that isn't literally the same. The point wasn't "you can do takebacks in chess so this is exactly the same!!!" but that the advantage for moving first in chess is much smaller than is already accepted in other sports.
vsuperpower2021··on Every company should be owned by its employees
This is not tenable. 400k people aren't going to all individually work extra hard for starbucks if their own work doesn't individually benefit them.
vsuperpower2021··on You got a null result. Will anyone publish it?
The whole point of publishing studies is to be able to brag about how many impressions you have, which is good for your career. Who is going to care that your blog got views?
vsuperpower2021··on I mapped almost every USA traffic death in the 21st century
There's a non-trivial chance that the only reason you're around to complain about child safety is that we spent so long eliminating unnecessary dangers. The issue is speeding, not that you want to get somewhere faster than the speed limit.
vsuperpower2021··on It All Started with a nop
I had similar experiences with every group project, where one or two people have to do all the work. I asked a teacher about it once, and his explanation is that it's a lesson for working in the real world. Really drives home the saying "those who can't do, teach". I think it would have been more moral to do what your teacher did and actually validate contribution, instead of intentionally teaching students that you can screw around at someone else's expense and get away with it.
vsuperpower2021··on Show HN: I generated 70k audiobooks with OpenAI Text-to-Speech
It makes them "not generated" which means the "generated" part is a lie. Generally I've found Ukrainian software developers to be dishonest, but now I'm wondering if it's a cultural difference in understanding of what words mean.
vsuperpower2021··on Show HN: I generated 70k audiobooks with OpenAI Text-to-Speech
You seem to understand english well enough that you know that the title, as stated, is a lie. It's simply not true regardless of whatever rationalizations you can come up with. You barely making money off it doesn't make it true. Users being able to buy a $15/month subscription to listen to 10 hours of audio doesn't make it true.
vsuperpower2021··on Show HN: I generated 70k audiobooks with OpenAI Text-to-Speech
How about "I imagined generating 70k audiobooks, and you can subscribe to my website for $50/month"?
vsuperpower2021··on Show HN: I generated 70k audiobooks with OpenAI Text-to-Speech
Aside from the lie about generating 70k audiobooks, it also gets so much free advertising because people think this is a hobby "crowd sourced" project when the author is just selling tech services and subscriptions.
vsuperpower2021··on Teaching general problem-solving skills is not a substitute for teaching math [pdf] (2010)
They skip definitions, theorems, and proofs for good reason too. Students are spending a lot of time and money they don't have to get a degree and have an obligation to work efficiently. With a limited amount of time and energy they would actively hurting themselves by focusing on things that aren't graded. In general I've found that teachers grade quite harshly on things you could have memorized, and find little value in understanding or institution.
vsuperpower2021··on Teaching general problem-solving skills is not a substitute for teaching math [pdf] (2010)
Most research makes assumptions like these without laying them out. It might explain none of their work can be reproduced.
vsuperpower2021··on NexDock turns your smartphone into a laptop
This looks like a neat idea but the marketing for this is scummy. Adding a keyboard and screen does not like a "gaming PC" just because you can run cloud games on it. It advertises plugging a raspberry pi into it for a "fully functional computer at a revolutionarily low cost" which isn't true. You also can't turn your phone into a windows 10 laptop by running cloud services.
vsuperpower2021··on Python programming for Nintendo 8 bits (2018)
I kept thinking to myself, someone really should design a language that compiles down to ASM so we don't have to write it by hand. Finally.
vsuperpower2021··on Ask HN: What were interviews like before Leetcode?
The comment you're replying to is almost certainly a power fantasy and not actual behavior from an interviewer. Basically, someone I had power over was rude to me, and I got revenge with a relevant programmer story.
