vsnf··on I am not a supplier (2022)
> We also did not add any free software

What does this really mean? Did you use some paid language/compiler ala Borland? Did you write all your own libraries?

Without huge resources, like an intelligence agency or multinational, I don’t see how it’s possible to not use any free software. Unless these stories take place 30 years ago or something.

vsnf··on AI-generated sad girl with piano performs the text of the MIT License
AI Art is second-order human art. From this viewpoint it's still human by proxy.

And anyway, is it measurably different from art produced while tripping on LSD or in similar states of altered consciousness, such as schizophrenia, dementia, or even depression, which often produce things many people would not describe as regular?

Unironically very good. A convincing replica of Miku's voice. Plus the beat itself is great too. As another commenter put it, it is indeed, a banger.

vsnf··on Bridges in the US are threaten by truck drivers relying on GPS meant for cars
A similar local example of this is UHaulers moving in for their freshman semester in Boston destroying their truck and backing up traffic for hours by getting themselves onto a road with a low overpass. This overpass strips the roof of the truck, and is referred to as getting Storrowed, named for Storrow Drive, the road they shouldn’t be on.

No amount of signage can remedy this, the only way to fix it would be to raise the overpass, or to have the drivers gps route them more appropriately.

vsnf··on When Will the GenAI Bubble Burst?
I use GPT-4 to assist in some programming, and it's useful. But I've been struggling to figure out where LLMs make sense as something integrated into a larger product. As an end-user, where I can directly ask them for something specific ("write a function that...") that I can both inspect, double check, and further refine before accepting, they make sense to me. But as an integrated aspect of some system, I haven't been able to come up with any compelling, or even mildly useful usecases.

Also, is anyone using the local, non-OpenAI LLMs for anything useful? They've always been slower and measurably worse than OpenAI's GPTs for me.

vsnf··on Dan Lynch Has Died (SRI, Arpanet, Internet)
This comment perplexes me. Do you think there is no research happening? In that view, what do you think disease research, anti-aging research, and medical/pharmacological research is? And do you suppose that there are a finite amount of great minds, that the current set of them dying off implies that we'll be left without any soon enough, or that the current set needs to be maintained forever? As important as his work was, do we need to keep him around forever as some sort of special class of person?
vsnf··on XZ Backdoor: Times, damned times, and scams
> arguably bigger than that

That’s a stretch. Stuxnet was the first acknowledged state cyber attack, utilized multiple zero days, and destroyed nuclear weapons manufacturing facilities. Bigger in scope sure, but bigger unconditionally? I don’t know about that.

vsnf··on Layout of Rust's u128 and i128 changed
This is a very good article, written well for an audience that might not understand the details of memory layouts.

Also, in the 0x0x11223344556677889900aabbccddeeff sample value they're using, what is this 0x0x format? Is this some some low level asm thing, or is it just a formatting typo?

vsnf··on LLMs use a surprisingly simple mechanism to retrieve some stored knowledge
> Linear functions, equations with only two variables and no exponents, capture the straightforward, straight-line relationship between two variables

Is this definition considering the output to be included in the set of variables? What a strange way to phrase it. Under this definition, I wonder what an equation with one variable is. Is a single constant an equation?

vsnf··on Tell HN: Old.reddit.com seems to be blocked for VPN users
This was the case for me yesterday as well, but as of an hour ago, using Mullvad (by way of Mozilla VPN), I am now blocked.
vsnf··on A Nigerian woman reviewed some tomato puree online. Now she faces jail
Sure, except for the obvious red and gold counterpoint in the far east.
vsnf··on Google suspends romance author's account for writing sexually explicit content
Yes, those are the the proximate causes. I'm worried about the effect these causes will induce going forward. With enough time, this expanded hypersensitivity will move out of TikTok and into wider culture permanently.
vsnf··on Google suspends romance author's account for writing sexually explicit content
Something related I’ve been wondering about is the change in language catalyzed by social media companies and their morality / fear of advertisers.

You see it especially in TikTok videos. When people aren’t straight up censoring themselves with bleeps, dead audio, or cuts, they use euphemisms instead: kill -> unalive, rape -> grape, sex -> seggs.

Even more concerning is that what is considered in need of censoring is expanding. I saw a video where the creator censored “white” when referring to Caucasians.

vsnf··on Go Enums Still Suck
Maybe it's slightly better than total shit, but it's still pretty shit. Half the struct field tags aren't even typechecked, and will force you to go on hours long goose chases wondering why something isn't working only for you to realize eventually that 'someField string `db_orm_field_1:"0"' is actually supposed to be '"someField string `db_orm_field1:"0"'.
vsnf··on The rise and fall of D&D in Japan
Dragon Quest too, for an obviously big cultural artifact.
vsnf··on Vultr is now claiming full perpetual commercial rights over all hosted content
I'm conflicted on comments like that. On one hand, companies make mistakes otherwise they'd never lose in court, but they do from time to time. On the other hand, Vultr has their own lawyers, presumably higher paid and better armed than an individual would have access to, so how confident can one be that their personal lawyer has a better legal theory than the corporate lawyers?
vsnf··on Florida's DeSantis signs law restricting social media for people under 16
Indeed there are. There are many hills I’ll die on, and while this isn’t one of them, I do find it deeply uncomfortable to so clearly deny a whole category of citizens representation.
vsnf··on Florida's DeSantis signs law restricting social media for people under 16
Yep, I understand the practical issues with my position. But I can’t ethically condone saying “you have no voice” to a fellow citizen, so I prefer no restrictions.
vsnf··on Florida's DeSantis signs law restricting social media for people under 16
I have the opposite take you have. There should be no restriction on voting age at all. Everyone possesses the right to have a say in the direction of the government that governs them.
vsnf··on How to criticize computer scientists (2001)
He was very strict, valuing correctness and rigidity, but entirely well meaning. It was never about showcasing superiority, nor was it ever nitpicking. Being in the spotlight though, it could certainly feel like an attack. And in some cases it was, but it was an attack on the idea, not on the person. He was ruthless, but rarely ever wrong.
vsnf··on How to criticize computer scientists (2001)
> Am I missing something here?

A colleague of mine at a company I worked at, very intelligent, would often hurl this verbal weapon out at anyone delivering any kind of technical presentation. He was a very deep thinker and always had incisive insights. It was both a treat, and also terrifying to see him essentially interrogate the presenter. I only had to go before him one time, and it was both a test of one's knowledge of the material, and a measurement of one's emotional fortitude.

As for the question, the answer was almost always "No, you are missing nothing. The rest of us simply do not exist on the same level as you do".

vsnf··on SQLite Schema Diagram Generator
It also adds a severe amount of visual clutter between the code. Individual preference I’m sure, but I’d prefer less comments, I think. Or maybe my IDE just needs to collapse comments inside functions automatically.
vsnf··on Mapping almost every law, regulation and case in Australia
Some artists had very long chains, n >= 8 between them. But a lot of artists either never collaborate at all, or only collaborate with a specific group of people. Usually that group of people is a very niche sub-sub-genre of music, like bubblegum phonk.

That being said, this was an analysis of my own library, and I didn't grab the entire discography of every artist.

vsnf··on Microsoft Launches Surface Laptop 6 for Business and Surface Pro 10
I had two surfaces die from swollen batteries. The problem was frequent enough that Microsoft Store staff (rip) would exchange it immediately, no questions asked.

This was back during the Surface Book 1 days. I’ve been a happy surface user ever since, and haven’t had any other battery or build quality issues since.

vsnf··on Mapping almost every law, regulation and case in Australia
I had something similar once - it was a graph of connections between all the artists in my Spotify library to see who had collab'd with who. It was a lot of fun to see just how distantly connected two artists were through a long chain of collabs and collabs. Of course, like most human connection maps, it mostly came down to a handful of super-connectors who collaborate with hundreds of people, who in turn collaborate with their own niche groups. But there were some interesting groups revealed by it.
vsnf··on Gitlab confirms it's removed Suyu, a fork of Nintendo Switch emulator Yuzu
What amount of goodwill Nintendo burns away is more than made up for by them continuing to make good games. I am confident that there is quite literally nothing they can do as a company to hurt their reputation enough to be fiscally damaging, save from actually making bad games. And even that doesn't seem to be an impediment to them (see also: the Pokemon mainline games).

They'd have to have a string of probably 10 consecutive years putting out absolute dogshit before they'd get even close to feeling the pain.

vsnf··on Netflix Kept Showing Smoking in TV Shows Despite 2019 Pledge, Study Finds
You joke, but I think about this relatively often. There really is something cool about the aesthetic of using cigarettes. I also think about a related but opposite problem of helmets, for instance for bicycling, skateboarding, or snowboarding. Something so essential looks so goofy, and this surely hinders usage. I wonder what it would take to make them switch places, culturally.
vsnf··on Titanfall is still EA's most innovative shooter ten years later
Other companies are no stranger to this phenomenon either. Warcraft Classic is Blizzard's, and arguably the MMO genre's most innovative game right now, and its 20 years old.
vsnf··on Ask HN: What are your oldest "online" accounts still in use?
Same. But my EQ account from Kunark would be even older, by about 4 years.
vsnf··on Cranelift code generation comes to Rust
