vrc··on Turns are better than radians
See Gaussian-CGS v. SI units [0]. It really confused me going from a CGS physics class to an EE electrodynamics course!

vrc··on The toll of dating app burnout
Just don’t go too far past what you can deliver in person. The matching party could feel catfished and that will just push your failure down-funnel.

I.E. don’t take shots with perfectly styled hair, a leather jacket, and a motorcycle, if your day to day and date attire will be a t-shirt and jeans and you’re going to arrive on an e-scooter.

vrc··on Ask HN: Did the Tesla return to work happen?
Incentive Stock Option. SOs that vest over time or via some other performance metric
vrc··on How to make fermented hot sauce (2021)
Just wanted to add this anecdote in case people want to get frisky with fermented hot sauces. I’ve been experimenting with fermented hot-sauce equivalents of Indian pickles, using green mango, dried lemon, turmeric, fenugreek, nigella, mustard, etc (not all in the same sauce) and it’s shockingly similar in taste to the original pickle but without any oil.
vrc··on Goat Rental – Hire Goats
Fish and turtles immediately come to mind. I knew of somebody who released Siberian dwarf hamsters and for a brief period they multiplied in their backyard before the local red tailed hawk caught wind
vrc··on Goat Rental – Hire Goats
My town stopped its annual “goats clear the park” setup because one goat would consistently escape and wreak havoc on traffic. Pretty solid enclosure, too
vrc··on The End of Manual Transmission
I am not terribly old, but my dad insisted I drive stick (he grew up with a manual crank-start car in India), and all of my cars were manual until I went EV. I think I was far more attentive driving a manual, and that’s carried over but slowly fading. Just the awareness you need of your driving situation —- eg do I need to pass and does that require me to downshift? —- made me far more vigilant than I otherwise would have been.
vrc··on Foods That Fight Inflammation
Rheumatologists in particular care deeply about inflammation markers in both blood and imaging. Unfortunately the presence of inflammation doesn’t always pinpoint which rheumatic condition (if any) you have. But gastroenterologists and even ophthalmologists use these markers in making diagnoses.
vrc··on In defence of garlic in a jar
Small modifications = don’t plop it into hot oil like you’d do with fresh ginger garlic or it will splatter on you. Usually I saute onion or something else and then add the cube. The brand I find in my local grocery is the same as TJs — Dorot
vrc··on In defence of garlic in a jar
I buy the frozen ginger and garlic cubes TJs has and that’s been a revelation. Fresh taste, no prep, only slight modifications to use. The snobs can go rub stainless steel with their garlic scented hands!
vrc··on One man’s fight to end California’s ban on ferrets
The black footed ferret is native to the US, wild, and endangered. The domestic ferret is thought to be from the European polecat
vrc··on Documenting Aramaic before its native speakers vanish (2013)
Seems like 6mm worldwide. They’re concentrated in the southern state of Kerala, and it seems you’re on to something about the Marthoma [0]

vrc··on 58% of Americans are living paycheck to paycheck – including 30% earning $250k
Americans also often don’t have the same relationship with their nuclear families. In India, and from what I’ve heard Europe and AUNZ, it’s not uncommon to live at home and commute to university and sometimes after. That’s anathema to the American model. 18 and you’re out the door.

Many of my friends’ parents financially cut them off when they graduated high school, and/or immediately moved out of their town to a lower tax area (and these are upper middle class folks). So that safety net of weathering the storm in a hometown may not always be there IME.

vrc··on Wild turtles age slowly, and some basically don’t age at all
Already part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (ex https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guilinggao)
vrc··on USDA ignoring the science on low-carb diets
I believe their stomach acids are far stronger, their bowels are a faster path to exit, and they often eat adjuncts which I assume help move things along.

Here’s a brief explanation from a member of Cornell faculty: http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives/2004-10/1096814276.Zo.r...

vrc··on One-night stands will be illegal at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar
Qatar is Sunni, not Twelver Shia. Their rules don’t have such short term niqqahs.
vrc··on One-night stands will be illegal at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar
If you’ve ever been to a GCC country, you’ll notice that passport control when leaving is extremely long. It’s filled with South Asian men (and some women) who are put through the ringer by the officials and often pulled aside for extra questioning before being able to board a flight. They all seem to be on pins and needles
vrc··on I'm making drugs for cats
And Rogaine. It was also created to treat High BP as a powerful vasodilator. Turns out it made you hairy too. Maybe we should spend all of our R&D pursuing High BP -- who knows what other ailments we'll cure!
vrc··on FTC acts against private equity firm’s acquisition of veterinary clinics
Also in my experience it’s very standard for dentists to quickly go out on their own —- many towns will have multiple dentists and none to one doctor or vet clinic.

Then again I’m seeing places like Aspen Dental popping up all over the place so who knows

vrc··on Coinbase employees petition to remove execs
That email about bankruptcy seemed to be a call to action to move funds off platform. Not sure why it was framed that way or sent to account holders — was it supposed to be a shakedown (“support us, or else…”)? Either way, Ledger just got a new customer.
vrc··on The Weight I Carry (2019)
Right. So two furnaces run at 98.6. Is it not possible that one is more efficient at maintaining that temp (slow metabolism) versus one that is inefficient(fast metabolism). That’s why people suggest finding your basal metabolic rate (BMR) and from there everything is CI<CO.
vrc··on I stopped to watch kids playing at recess – security was called
Sorry, by DTX I meant Downtown Crossing in Boston :)
vrc··on Coinbase stock lost over 75% value
Probably not materially. I also assume they have a pre-allocated pool for their ESOP or equivalent.
vrc··on Please don’t let anyone Americanise it (1992)
I used to watch Discovery’s “Wild Discovery” animal series every night. Then they spun out Animal Planet, which was cool. Then they started putting filler programming on AP. Now it’s all gone Honey Boo Boo TLC with scripted reality shows that are animal-adjacent. Have to catch reruns of Blue Planet and Planet Earth on BBCAmerica if I want to unwind with a nature doc in the evening
vrc··on I stopped to watch kids playing at recess – security was called
DTX is regressing in the last 5-10 years. Not to combat zone levels, but certainly not the calmer place it was becoming
vrc··on Please don’t let anyone Americanise it (1992)
That’s why the continuous motion ones are so sought after and pricy. The mechanical continuous motion watches are really marvelous feats of engineering
vrc··on Please don’t let anyone Americanise it (1992)
I think there’s something about British narration of nature docs that makes them more relaxing and engaging for American audiences. Especially those who grew up in an era of Discovery Channel and PBS where the narration was usually British, or South African, or Australian, or in the Commonwealth-tinged flavor of English of that location. Perhaps it’s nostalgia.
vrc··on Tether starting to lose its peg too, after Terra did
If not, somebody is feverishly writing an ERP now
vrc··on Acute inflammatory response via neutrophil protects against chronic pain
If you’re trying to make “gainz” then don’t ice according to this study [0]. If you’re trying to avoid muscle soreness and swelling however I don’t know. Anecdotally icing areas that I have previous or chronic issues with prevents flare-ups.

vrc··on Acute inflammatory response via neutrophil protects against chronic pain
Whoa! Probably not wise to casually suggest people pop corticosteroids if their “inflammation is in overdrive” based on some blood tests. Seems like something a doctor needs to evaluate given the serious side effects of their use.
