vr46··on Social-Media Influencers Aren't Getting Rich–They're Barely Getting By
Good to see articles like this, even if the air has been coming out of the bubble for a while here.
vr46··on FTC sues Adobe for hiding fees and inhibiting cancellations
I couldn't agree more. AS3 was my gateway drug into static typing, IDEs, all manner of things. I did have Flex/FDT at one client, but after that I ended up using Flash Develop because it was so good, even if it was Windows.

Having first MTASC and then the as3 compiler on the command line was another route into modern-day build pipelines. The 3D engines were great, Box2D port was great, and looking at it all now in 2024, the APIs still hold up and Adobe could restart an entire multimedia division with it.

Kindof, but there was a ton of work done on ActionScript 3 making it all ECMA (?) compliant and there was a heck of a lot of road left on that. It was TypeScript before there was modern Javascript. And that could have been parlayed into a different runtime, like Haxe did. Flash the runtime had many problems, but the IDE and tools behind them were mature and well-understood.
vr46··on 'The big problem is water': UK ebike owners plagued by failing motors
Sure, the one I use right now is a German spray: https://www.weicon.de/en/corro-protection-wax-like-corrosion...

YMMV

vr46··on 'The big problem is water': UK ebike owners plagued by failing motors
Are you sure that's not just because it's cadmium plated or packed with other nasties that provided similar benefits? :D

The guy that sometimes services my BMW goes on frequent unprompted rants about how the modern bikes corrode so much more easily, etc etc etc. Not once has he looked into why.

vr46··on 'The big problem is water': UK ebike owners plagued by failing motors
Good to hear this, since it encourages me to stick with the VanMoof I bought in 2019. Fancier, swishier bikes abound, but the VM just keeps on truckin’

As a biker, cyclist, skater, and ebiker, I’ve settled about various wax-like sprays to keep crap off and out. ACF-50 for the motorbike, various protective wax sprays for the bicycles, Vaseline for skate bearings.
vr46··on Denmark recalls Korean ramen for being too spicy
The packet specifically in the BBC image - I was at the Chinese supermarket in London Chinatown, when some Korean students walked in and one of them saw those packets and said ‘oh yeah that’s the one that completely beat me.’

I was curious, so naturally I bought five packets.

I was unable to finish a single whole packet. Tried five times. Failed five times. Got very close but never quite made it.

vr46··on Noam Chomsky 'no longer able to talk' after 'medical event'
The man writes faster than I can realistically read, but I still have a full shelf that I have dipped into over the last 32 years. Linguistics to Gaza, one of my proudest moments was once having some wingnut include me on a public list of enemies alongside Chomsky.
vr46··on Photoshop ToS grants Adobe access to user projects for 'content moderation'
Ah, but C1 has completely changed the offer by not including a single new feature update on the one-time perpetual purchase, only bug fixes, and no upgrade pricing at all. So it completely removes any kind of incentive for customer to stay loyal.
vr46··on Photoshop ToS grants Adobe access to user projects for 'content moderation'
Ditto. Commercial software turned out to have limited headroom.

GIMP is here but I can’t quite get my head around the lack of integration with open and save dialogs, even while I recognize your reasoning. The dumbest stuff becomes the biggest obstacle sometimes.

But no matter, because said commercial software companies are finding new paradigms for shrinkflation while reaching new heights in fiction and fantasy.

vr46··on Photoshop ToS grants Adobe access to user projects for 'content moderation'
Ah, the new Lightroom CC! I was a happy, delighted, enthusiastic Lightroom user from the moment it originally came out and threw Aperture into the bin where it belongs. Lightroom was fast, brilliant to use, a fabulous wrapper around ACR and managed all the photo files perfectly.

It was, to me, as perfect a piece of consumer software that has ever existed.

The moment CC turned up, not only was it a cut-down version in terms of features, but the file management side was gone too, and this whole cloud functionality took over. A complete workflow change.

The main benefit that I found, ok, the only benefit, was that I was able to easily create web galleries for client approval etc. Everything else was gone. Lightroom Classic came back, kind of, but the direction of travel was fixed.

It took me years and years to finally get close to that one-stop-shop workflow, using Photo Mechanic and Capture One, both of which have gone subscription-based and offering close to zero value in return.

My strategy now, I shit you not, is to never ever perform a major upgrade on this Mac and hold out until all the root SSL certificates expire with my current setup.

We used to have such stable computing environments and now everything is a cloud-connected, exposed and defenceless security shitshow.

vr46··on Fixing My Yamaha Electone Me-50: An FM Synthesizer Home Organ from 1986
Yeah, and one thing I wondered was whether the physical switches on the older models negated the need for any kind of memory, and if so, the change seems like a step backwards.
vr46··on Fixing My Yamaha Electone Me-50: An FM Synthesizer Home Organ from 1986
Only three weeks ago did we load my Electone FE-70 into a van so my mate could take it. I rescued it for free but we had to lift it down four flights of awkward stairs like Laurel and Hardy. Outstanding instruments, enormous fun, they look fantastic and they’re worthless. If I could have brought it here when I moved I would have. Such fun to play with the rhythm tracks and accompaniments. So many buttons to play with.

If the lids closed flat, at least I could have justified it as a table…

vr46··on Story of why Elon Musk fired the entire Tesla Supercharger staff
Maybe he is a cretinous manchild, maybe not. It seems that way, even without the full story.
vr46··on Steve Albini has died
Damn. Glad I got to see Shellac at Primavera a few years ago. What a career. RIP.
vr46··on Apple introduces M4 chip
True, should have just said nonsense
vr46··on Apple introduces M4 chip
Countering a lazy reference with some weird racist stereotype was the best you could do?
vr46··on Israel shuts down local Al Jazeera offices
I would likely be arrested if I wore my UK-created anti-fascist Football Fans Against Apartheid/Free Palestine pin, so it’s going into a drawer. Zionism has drowned all voices, my Jewish friends are being harassed for dissent too.
vr46··on A Delivery Chain Breach: A UK bank opened the back door to China
Well, Barclays are my main and Starling my secondary and only ever accessed via apps, so I could start by testing them both. Thanks for all this work.
vr46··on A Delivery Chain Breach: A UK bank opened the back door to China
Super depressing as a happy Metro bank customer, although I only use their mobile app. Which isn’t amazing. All I can say now is how quickly can I switch accounts?
vr46··on Spotify to hike UK subscription prices in May
And Tidal looking to move in with the recent massive price drop/quality increase double whammy.
vr46··on How to found a company in Germany: 14 "easy" steps and lots of pain
Amazing, I’ve moved to Hamburg and the system is horrifyingly fascinating.
vr46··on Dali owner file petition to cap liability in Baltimore bridge collapse at $43.7M
"I mean, how hard could it be?"

It's an incredibly rare event. Retro-fitting things in the water is crazy expensive. Somebody estimated that the force hitting the bridge was 30 Million Pounds. That's a lot of protection needed.

vr46··on Simon Riggs has died
Not really, because different people are different. Some may not have the capacity to eat fewer large portions - like me - and eat less, more frequently.

Many people eat more than they need to at any given time, that is arguably greedy and argubably wasteful in a different way.

Portion sizes are static, appetites vary, letting people manage for themselves is perfectly fine.

vr46··on Simon Riggs has died
You're definitely not speaking about the UK as a whole, this is completely normal and rooted in not wanting to waste food.
vr46··on We do not prefer chords to be perfectly in mathematical ratios: study
This is intriguing and clearly not new as you say - my strobe tuner offers "sweetened" tunings for guitar. Going to have to experiment with this variation now...
vr46··on Lego price per part over the years
Well, simple: we have some
vr46··on Lego price per part over the years
I’ve seen how much attention Lego puts into designing and making their bricks and sets, as well as their general outlook, so combined with their better quality, fake Lego bricks is not something I want polluting or diluting my/my kid’s Lego.
