vpribish··on The first room-temperature ambient-pressure superconductor?
room temperature superconductor does not need 'spice', save the clowning for something trivial
vpribish··on All foster kids in California can now attend any state college for free
obviously. we all get that part.
vpribish··on Investigating Zika-Microcephaly's ‘Crash’
Dude. If you are serious, check in with your friends and family. I think you actually might need help with something. Like, really.
vpribish··on Investigating Zika-Microcephaly's ‘Crash’
yeah, this looks like a sensible post from a sincere reader of sound mind, not a troll at all.
vpribish··on Intel is all-in on backside power delivery
the silicon is not a critical cost here at all.
vpribish··on Blood test for 50 types of cancer could speed up diagnosis, study suggests
Huh. I saw something blocking me from reading halfway down but it is not there now on my phone anyway. Still don’t trust em, but I guess it’s not paywalled.
vpribish··on Blood test for 50 types of cancer could speed up diagnosis, study suggests
I don't trust The Guardian, and it has a paywall. Here's a BBC piece :

https://www.bbc.com/news/health-65775159

It's about the Galleri Test, which looks good enough to be useful. It's a DNA fragment analysis of a blood sample with lots of false negatives, but few false positives. This study was of people already suspected to have cancer, but the test helped determine what kind and where it was. cool

vpribish··on Emissions are no longer following the worst case scenario
your global trade link stops in 2014, but the world bank shows the trade decline trend continuing to the present [1]

you raise concerns about the interpretation of GDP and use trade as a more believable replacement - but how about using manufacturing as a more direct replacement? it seems to have continued it's rising trend through the present. [2] rising by 50% in the last 10 years.

this seems to show that growth has not been flat, but has been rising in line with long-term trends.

vpribish··on SpaceX's Starship didn't immediately respond to a self-destruct command
Clickbait and lying.

It did immediately respond - by detonating the self-destruct explosives. It's just that that didn't immediately destroy the whole rocket.

vpribish··on Help make mass surveillance of entire populations uneconomical
same. turing test failed. it's over-wordified, too formal, message-light. how did it get to the top?
vpribish··on Even Apple employees hate Siri and are skeptical of its future, new report says
"hey siri, start a 10 minute timer for the oven"

"hey siri, set a 30 minute timer for the rice."

it works just fine for me, use it all the time.

vpribish··on US to start training Ukrainian troops on Abrams tanks within weeks
flagged. this is totally irrelevant for HN and brings out the worst sort of comments.
vpribish··on Bob Lee, former CTO of Square, has died after being stabbed in San Francisco
don't be this way. pouring conspiracy nonsense onto a tragedy is gross
vpribish··on SBF’s legal defense is being funded with Alameda money he gave his father
Jumps out at me too - it's a meme spreading all over the online discussion world. not that it's improper use or a new idea or anything, but it's become really popular in the last several months. It is a useful nuance - signifying that ownership has transferred, not just possession. But, also cringe it seems like a lot of users are trying so so hard to fit in with the cool trendy kids.
vpribish··on The hard problem of onboarding horizontal products
skimmed. no idea what he means about a horizontal product. doesn't seem to be about, like, beds or baking sheets or train tracks.
vpribish··on NASA solved a $100M problem for five bucks (2012)
"steam-actuated dials" - this article is trash. they are trying to say "steam gauges" but for some reason are up-complicating it and since they don't know the subject they made nonsense.
vpribish··on Should we care about people who need never exist?
It’s a figure of speech
vpribish··on Mazda has tested a synthetic fuel in an unmodified MX5 on a 1000-mile road trip
oil supplies are so vast that they are practically infinite : we must stop using it because of the emissions. peak oil has always been junk science and clickbait news.

synthetic hydrocarbons as energy storage is interesting, but all about the economics.

vpribish··on Show HN: Write 500 Words a Day
Do you have a newsletter about long tail, low competition keywords? I could really use $20k/month simply by writing about my niche subject. Any favorite SEO tools for reaching these long tail, niche, low-competition keywords?
vpribish··on AP fires reporter behind retracted ‘Russian missiles’ story
dude. they are anti-air missiles, pretty easy to understand they were flying west chasing a target
vpribish··on Demystifying financial leverage
the key that they seem to delight in not telling you is that the 100M debt also came with 100M in assets - you borrowed 100M cash (an asset you now have) and promise to give it back later (a liability you now also have). Apart from those offsetting 100M entries on your books, you also have 10M other assets.

so you may have started with 10M - then you borrowed (and promise to repay) 100M more. there's your 1:10 (10:100) ratio.

vpribish··on Oxford University Press’s new logo is unfathomably bad
did no one point out that the new logo is looking down a rifled gun barrel - hardly a visual metaphor for education. Maybe they were trying to connect with the globally revered UK institution of James Bond?
vpribish··on Russia to Withdraw Troops from Kherson
holy cats, a real live one
vpribish··on How to choose the right Python concurrency API
content of article is ok, but why is it written like an SEO recipe website?
vpribish··on I won a suit against a party that sent me an unsolicited text message
clearly the current model doesn't work well enough. US laws don't stop Nigerian scammers abusing weak telecom systems. Adding a tax paid by the carrier incentivises them to collect it from the upstream chain all the way back to the caller.
vpribish··on Mission to reach and operate at the focal region of the solar gravitational lens
and here's that at night, seems like a similar resolution:

vpribish··on Shouldibuytwitter.com – A tiny takeover arbitrage model for TWTR
the world of arbitrage calls this arbitrage. there are other, more pure, arbitrages - but this is very mainstream one. you are buying the stock at the market price, while you think it will be worth the offer price - there's a risk that it blows up. risk arbitrage. (not to be confused with garbitrage)
vpribish··on MIT engineers fly first-ever plane with no moving parts (2018)
I'm baffled that MIT's PR is so cringeworthy. They had a priceless, universally recognized and irreplaceable brand and they are just trashing it with a sustained campaign of cheap clickbait seemingly aimed at a technologically ignorant audience. WTF? WHY? The Fools!
vpribish··on Health minister: Unexplained high death counts in New Brunswick concerning
I wish I could tell if it was trolls, idiots, or villains - it's hard to respond appropriately if unsure. regardless, this is very sad to see on HN.
vpribish··on Fritzing is an open-source electronic design tool
if you tell them then it stops being a useful indicator
