vore··on 11% of the world’s billionaires have held or sought political office
In practice, I think this gets you politicians who are completely detached from the common man – what do you mean you don’t have a personal maid that does all your shopping for you?
vore··on MetNet-3: A state-of-the-art neural weather model
Mid Atlantic = south of New England north of Virginia (more or less), not middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
vore··on MetNet-3: A state-of-the-art neural weather model
Does anyone's 5 day forecast look good?
vore··on C++23: Removing garbage collection support
I would probably agree with those scientists, this seems like a “well actually” kind of gotcha claim with no practical significance when there is no usable implementation of this.
vore··on Two hackers one keyboard two ways
You’ve never hammed anything up on purpose for laughs? Overexaggeration is peak comedy!
vore··on Gmail, Yahoo announce new 2024 authentication requirements for bulk senders
5000 emails a day is an extremely low limit for spammers, though.

It’s kind of a goofy translation of 名誉 in that context, it’s probably less silly to translate it as “prestige”.
vore··on Psychedelic Mushrooms Hit the Market in Oregon
We do have some understanding of the safety profile of psilocybin, even if its Schedule I status makes it hard to research. At the very least, it doesn’t have physical dependency like opioids.

However, the lack of significant safety research does make it hard to determine the incidence of development of disorders like HPPD but, unlike opioids, I can’t imagine someone wanting to continue taking psilocybin after developing HPPD.

vore··on Killings in the U.S. are dropping at a historic rate
Sure, but what matters is if they track the actual crime rate right? If you’ve never made any claims then you’ve never been a significant data point to begin with.
vore··on C++ Attribute: Likely, Unlikely
The part that's confusing me is the part about avoiding clutter – if you have to do all the checks anyway, what clutter are you avoiding by changing the order of them?
vore··on C++ Attribute: Likely, Unlikely
I'm so confused by this. How would you avoid doing these checks? Aren't they invariants for your function?
vore··on The decline of computers as a general-purpose technology (2021)
This article has absolutely nothing to do with what you’re saying. This article is about how certain types of calculations are better suited and are more efficient on specialized processors. I don’t know what finding dates in Excel has to do with this.

vore··on Clearview doesn't let Europeans delete themselves anymore
Sure they can – if any subsidiary of the controller or processor is domiciled in the EU, they can penalize the subsidiary.
vore··on Clearview doesn't let Europeans delete themselves anymore
Right, I would argue that if the OP is not complying or attempting to comply with GDPR and believe that the laws don't apply to them at all, then they are not making an effort either to actively avoid offering goods or services to EU citizens.
vore··on Clearview doesn't let Europeans delete themselves anymore
https://gdpr.eu/article-3-requirements-of-handling-personal-...

  2. This Regulation applies to the processing of personal data of data subjects who are in the Union by a controller or processor not established in the Union, where the processing activities are related to:

    a. the offering of goods or services, irrespective of whether a payment of the data subject is required, to such data subjects in the Union; or

    b. the monitoring of their behaviour as far as their behaviour takes place within the Union.

  3. This Regulation applies to the processing of personal data by a controller not established in the Union, but in a place where Member State law applies by virtue of public international law.
How this is enforced this is a different question, but the GDPR explicitly spells out that the controller or processor, even if not established in the EU, is subject to GDPR if they are interacting with EU citizens.
vore··on Clearview doesn't let Europeans delete themselves anymore
Hmm. I hope you are aware that GDPR has extraterritorial jurisdiction, enforced via any data controller or processors you are using that have a presence in the EU. Did you remember to check all your boxes there too?

vore··on Bandcamp's Entire Union Bargaining Team Was Laid Off
Why can't they also want to make conditions better? Why do people have to accept that conditions are bad, tough tits, deal with it? We would probably have not half the safety regulations we have today and people would be dying a lot more on the job.
vore··on To YouTube: I'd gladly pay you if your website was de-bloated and fast like this
If your choice is between no YouTube vs ad-supported + premium YouTube, what would you rather have? How would you keep YouTube afloat?

vore··on Skyvew – View and share Bluesky threads without needing a Bluesky account
I don’t think that’s true either; they’ve explicitly stated that their roadmap for 2024 is federation: https://atproto.com/blog/2023-protocol-roadmap
vore··on Skyvew – View and share Bluesky threads without needing a Bluesky account
Huh? AT Protocol is neither proprietary nor centralized?

vore··on Apple plans to update iPhones in-store without opening the boxes
Surely you have to put a lot of trust in Apple as soon as you buy their product?
vore··on Transactions and Concurrency in PostgreSQL
"Security"? This has nothing to do with security. Also, it's not great to pollute technical forums with more ChatGPT-generated content when it would be more useful for domain experts to contribute their own knowledge.
vore··on Google blocked Pixel 8 reviewers and owners from benchmarking the Tensor G3 chip
I think you are as blind to Google’s intentions as much as I am, but it sure seems silly for them to intentionally block it from the Play Store when side loading it is trivial, doesn’t it?
vore··on Google blocked Pixel 8 reviewers and owners from benchmarking the Tensor G3 chip
I would place my bet on this being some kind of app compatibility mishap rather than Google actively blocking Geekbench and 3DMark.

Apparently Pixel 6a owners also had this problem, but with none of the Tensor G3 performance speculation in the article: https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/wc4m3w/pixel_6...
