vonklaus··on Tsunami warning issued after magnitude 7.9 quake hits east of Papua New Guinea
I started noticing this and did a bit if research. These are fairly significant size earthquakes and since measurement there are not very many >8 in magnitude.
vonklaus··on Google studying ways to deal with offensive search suggestions and results
...and what simply is. If you go to wolfram alpha the number of google users / total internet is 42%. No idea why people dont consider this dangerous

vonklaus··on CoreOS Linux Is Now Container Linux by CoreOS
There logo and brand is great. It was one of the logos/brands I used yesterday for a gig I had designing a logo for a VR startup-- and CoreOS was my favorite.

It was minimal & likely unique enough for trademark and clean. I like it. This is a terribly verbose pivot and pretty bad as far as rebrands go.

vonklaus··on Google Web Designer (2013)
> Where is the need for this product?

An intuitive easy to use WYSIWYG editor is a highly sought afterand demanded product category. Squarespace costs money and is actually (for me) a pretty bad user exp.

Google probably can deliver on this because they are SEO. Even good editors were not semantic. I havent tried this product, but if it is halfway decent it will find market share. If it is perfect it could replace wordpress.

I am pretty competent as a developer and I would use (based on my understanding from the link) this product rather than battle css or compile sass. Plus I can edit the code.

On top of top teir engineering, google has control of SEO & pagerank so maybe they can win where orhers hadnt. No brainer for them.

vonklaus··on [dead]
i challenge you to reread this article and view it as skeptically and through the lens of itself being propaganda advocating the "fake news" censorship angle in a different way.

This pushes similar views of the pro-censorship rhetoric that but reframes it for those skeptical of google/control. The real problem is massive consolidation, which gives outsize levels of control to very few entities.

This article focuses on a trifle and is misleading and complimentary to the pro "truth" censorship of the nebulous "fake news".

Google serves 42% of the world with the lyxury of access to internet. It serves traffic at scale estimated to be3x the size of Facebook[0].

This article is a strawman that google (built by 2 jews) leads people to conclude jews could be bad...erm maybe. But here is the real scare:

- 1M google pws leaked; gooligan.

- All search engines based on Page Rank, immitate google. Google influences what is shown on the other 4ish search engines that cover most of worlds traffic.

- control what is & isnt indexed.

- control email, have lionshare and dictate what is "spam". Running a mailserver is hard.

- "too big to fail", imagine that dns, cloud, search, email, browser, store, android went out. Not only would google apps/email halt biz, but failover of redisistributing 40% of worlds traffic === the biggest ddos ever

- see 40% of worlds thought in realtime.

I know this is pretty extreme but I cant help but see this article as pro censorship shilling wrapped up in plausible alarmist rgetoric.

Yes google has influence, probably 1000th on list of dangers is people "going down the completion rabbit hole" and being misinformed. Sure, it happens, bur it is a symptom of a symptom of the problem.

TL;DR this article uses a real problem to push the "fake news bullshit" from another angle. Ecen has the inflamatory "jews" or "muslims" are bad to make it go viral. Thos is real propaganda, look closer

[0]google it. Wolfram alpha had estimates of 3.8ish total / 1.6B and wolfram has them doing 3x vol. on mobile google it, it isnt in 10-k filings because they are facing tons of comp.

vonklaus··on The Inside Story of MakerBot and the 3D Printing Revolution That Wasn't
Sure. The author framed it in a way where-- with SO as an example, I was waiting for something like:

The community is great for beginners who take the time to read the documentation and try solutions. 3D printing is complex and requires putting in the time and the community is happy to help those willing to learn. <joke>Beginners who are actually intermediate or experts with 1 or more CS/EE degrees are always welcome</joke>

vonklaus··on The Inside Story of MakerBot and the 3D Printing Revolution That Wasn't
> community, like Stackoverflow [ ... ] are very supportive and incredibly welcoming to beginners

I have never heard stackoverflow described like this.

vonklaus··on Amazon Worker Jumps Off Company Building After E-Mail to Staff
I don't understand this. Amazon seems to have seriously cutting edge infrastructure; they sell it as a service and operate more servers than google. Also, according to the article 20k people work for them, although I am not sure if that was total or engineers.

I am curious how they can retain people to manage all of their operations. Those terms sound terrible and not competitive. I would take those terms, but I am desperate. Why would others.

Interested to know if you(others) took terms out of naivete, need, broken promises/misrepresentation, career or skill boost, ect.

Tl;dr seems like a lot of good engineers work there, but many recount horrific exp.

vonklaus··on How Elizabeth Warren Took Down the CEO of Wells Fargo, and Why It Matters
The economy still works if banks go down, it just gets messy. How many companies & people use gmail to communicate, google apps for biz, android, search.

40% of the internet hitting Bing would potentially overwhelm it. Keep in mind the subprime mortgage crisis was several banks. Add microsoft and google, the world would panic.

Facebook sees 1/3 traffic of google. Just like a run on banks, people desperate for info would prob level news sites maybe even FB.

Consider that outside of content/services we have providers. Verizon down. At&t down. Overwhelm the other towers or broadband failure.

Leaving aside how disgusting it is that these are actively encouraged monopolies and kill innovation & competition, it is dangerous.

1% of Germany lost internet TODAY. Deutsche telkom hit with ddos. 5 Banks in Russia 2 weeks ago. Oct 21 we all remember what happened to dyn.

This isn't even hypothetical, literally getting worse daily.

vonklaus··on How Elizabeth Warren Took Down the CEO of Wells Fargo, and Why It Matters
This is good. Articles like this however always seem to recall the subprime mortgage crisis, when "too big to fail" sheltered CEOs and banks from much fallout.

I would like to express to Sen Warren, and others, that a more fragmented & transparent financial system is important-- but much less than the broadband & tech sector.

Google has 1.6B[0] users of a total of 3.8[1] internet users.

too big to fail is 42% of the world using "core" services from one institution.

The data is hard to find and I am on mobile but the consolidation of global broadband & wireless provideres attempted or closed between 2015-2016 was nearly 1 Trillion. A rollup of unprecedented levels.

[0]http://m.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=+total+active+users+googl... * While this is Alexa's visits total, subsets of Google's 10-k (which doesnt break this out because they are facing heavy competition) adjust to uniques. If someone finds better data, I will adjust, but this seems to be the accepted active user base of google.

vonklaus··on Ask HN: Is root-servers.org still official auth for root DNS; is down now?
I saw that. Also have confirmed via a few down detectors. It is down.

edit: I guess, my follow up is-- is that important? It is just a map, but they lettered subdomains are up.

vonklaus··on Stallman’s Law
This is tangential, but isn't http://www.root-servers.org/ still the authoritative source for DNS. I was browsing DNS options (switched to open-DNS) but the main http://www.root-servers.org/ site is down. It appears to be cached as recently as this month with a map, but is not responsive. A few other "detector" sites have it down. Is this important, or does it not show up because it is a resolver?

vonklaus··on FiB – A Facebook newsfeed accuracy verification Chrome extension

vonklaus··on FiB – A Facebook newsfeed accuracy verification Chrome extension
I don't use facebook. Most MSM is bullshit so i don't understand what "fake news" even means. Can someone please provide a few links for reference? Are we talking about the extremely outlandish things like:

Obama just ordered a covert strike force to start taking peoples guns

Or are we talking about factually inaccurate reporting?

vonklaus··on Time for a Rigorous National Debate About Surveillance
Trump wins largely due to poorly secured communications of his opponent. I think HRC getting hacked actually pushed this issue forward. If it can happen to someone this powerful, and it is now so easy to secure email & texts, most Americans probably are. That means; hopefully, it doesnt matter if it is flagged as security is hopefully on a mainstream trajectory
vonklaus··on Wikileaks:Hashes match the files after decryption (obviously)
If this doesn't convince people wl is compromised, what will? Not only is this out of ordinary-- for WL & anyone using checksums; but it is asinine:

Here, our leaders internet was cut and twitter here are some checksums. Smidst the chaos, just dl these huge 2-60GB files. We'll send you some decryption keys and once you decrypt these massive unverified files, you can use the checksums to verify.

raises hand

...couldn't we verify files before decryption?

What is happening rn. Are people buying into this?

vonklaus··on A “nation-state” used Wikileaks to influence US election, the head of NSA says
These are all fascinating facts and new to me. I actually didn't know any of these things. On balance, I think he is a leagues better person than Hillary or Trump but this definitely underscores hat all politicians make some terrible compromises/must do bad things.

We will never know if Trump would've beat Sanders but had he been on the ticket, I likely would've voted for him instead of writing in "no confidence". Interesting.

vonklaus··on A “nation-state” used Wikileaks to influence US election, the head of NSA says
> Apart from the fact that his hosts, his own legal team, and Swedish prosecutors have all publicly vouched for having interacted with him in the past couple of days and even Pamela bloody Anderson has met him since his last "proof of life", none whatsoever.

Links? PA met him over a month ago. I have not seen the prosecutor state she has met with him.

> there is not cryptographically sound proof that I am alive

Well, to my knowledge you aren't being hunted by state government. You also didn't publicly state, build, and confirm a contingency plan and take pains to cryptographically verify most of your disclosures.

I am again not speculating further. I am stating that despite his extremely precarious situation and his quarters being in a major city literally surrounded by reporters and with a balcony and windows he has not made an appearance despite tripping of his deadmans switch. Further, he is a pretty arrogant guy so I would be surprised he wouldn't be not only commenting on his successful influence of the election, his potential to exfiltrate himself from this legal mess or just generally make some statements, it is seeming as if he is no longer able to do so.

When your dead man switch goes off, and you have encouraged people to verify your identity in this scenario, it is pretty fucking weird there has not been cryptographic proof. Believe what you want, but clearly something is amiss.

vonklaus··on Visual Studio for Mac Preview
sorry, thought the satire was obvious.
vonklaus··on A “nation-state” used Wikileaks to influence US election, the head of NSA says
I am simply stating that there is no proof he is alive, and hasn't been for ~40 days. The checksums don't match-- which is a bit odd as they have consistently matched pre-comitments until now. That said, I would assume that if Assange is alive (and hasn't escaped the embassy somehow) that he would want people to know he was alive. If very powerful people were trying to kill you, you would likely not want to make it a habit to disappear for >1 month to elicit shock value. In the event someone actually does kidnap/threaten/kill you no one would think it odd for 40 days.

Again, I am not really speculating. There is no proof he is alive. Many have asked for it. The twitter poll vote was for a video, the pilger interview was a pre-recorded video and his spokesperson said he was "very ill and his condition had deteriorated" and the prosecutor relayed the info to him via 3rd party and barred his lawyer Samuelson from being present. So IDK what is going on, but something feels very strange about this.

vonklaus··on A “nation-state” used Wikileaks to influence US election, the head of NSA says
Point ceded, Clinton did win without super delegates. I misread that. That said, I believe sanders would have beaten Trump. I also believe the wikileaks emails and do not believe it was a fair contest (primary or general election). Again, I agree you are correct Hillary won, however I do not believe this was "fair". I believe the emails to be genuine as they were not disputed, and some were released by the government itself. I won't try to convince you how to interpret the content, but much of it certainly seems clear to me that between the non-agression pact, references to keeping in check due to their "leverage" over him, and the entire internal DNC scandal with DWS, ect. that this was anything but a typical primary.
vonklaus··on A “nation-state” used Wikileaks to influence US election, the head of NSA says
no. his last confirmed public appearance was early october. The checksums of the evidence files don't match post his internet going down. The questions were relayed to him and his lawyer was not present. Do your own research, don't take my word for it, however the "wikileakstaskforce" account was made in October. There is significant skepticism he is alive and the embassy has a bay window which his cat was seen at yesterday. He could simply pull back the curtain or sign a document with the private key to quell skeptics who have become increasingly vocal since his internet was severed over a month ago.

edit: it is nearly 7pm local time in London. Do you not find it odd wikileaks has been rather silent that it's founder has likely completed giving a full days deposition to exonerate him of the crime he is seeking asylum for...in that vbery embassy. A half-decade or greater ordeal. They posted an infographic yesterday, an NEA Bill Clinton leak, and appeal for pardoing Chelsea Manning. No mention that this is day 2 of a major fight for Assange.

edit 2: In fact, according to google[0] there has been NO news about it. There are ~5 stories and none of them relating to todays depo.

vonklaus··on A “nation-state” used Wikileaks to influence US election, the head of NSA says
What? Five thirty eight has them at:

HRC: 2,218

BS: 1,833

This includes >700 superdelegates which are not tied to primary contests. Hillary won almost all of these. If this was 100% up to voters (which admittedly is not how this contest works) it would be closer. That said, she certainly influenced those SD to vote for her well in advance.

http://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/election-2016/delegate-t...

edit: The above information is wrong. Tptacek corrected me. Please see my comment below for expanded point.

vonklaus··on A “nation-state” used Wikileaks to influence US election, the head of NSA says
no idea why this is downvoted. The emails provide this evidence. It can be searched literally right now on wikileaks. If the emails are real, these FACTS are included in emails:

- Campaign used influence to influence RNC via Pied Piper technique of promoting the weakest candidates...it worked.

- Campaign planned to oust DWS. They influenced the DNC to promote HRC over Sanders.

- Coordinated with DOJ.

- Coordinated with reporters both in feeding questions to RNC candidates and getting leaked questions in debates HRC was participating in.

- Stage protests at DJT rallies.

TO BE CLEAR, whether you believe the emails are genuine or not they DO contain this content and that is nearly indisputable.

vonklaus··on A “nation-state” used Wikileaks to influence US election, the head of NSA says
I believe that a nation state did use wikileaks to influence the election. I just think it was the U.S. Also, Assange hasn't been seen publicly in ~42 days. You can see the timeline on assange.net (not Julians personal site). It doesn't speculate, just provides facts. Very concerning.
vonklaus··on Visual Studio for Mac Preview
Yeah, this has been 99.99% of the reason people don't trust Microsoft. Someone says this in every single MS flame-war thread and is the reason many people (myself included) lost faith in MS and switched to OS X.
vonklaus··on Visual Studio for Mac Preview
I agree, but would add that I think their core motivation is to drive developers to microsoft azure. I am sure they believe they would love mac users to buy more MS software but targeting non-ms devs this hard seems like they want to compete with AWS && google.

AWS UX is a dumpster fire. Azure was quite nice from what I can tell. I love VS code and am a mac user. I also strongly dislike AWS as it is extremely complex and annoying. If there was amazing tooling, I would consider switching from digital ocean to azure.
