I am really interested in real-time, or timely monitoring of external services. I'll check the service out, but curious if any of it is open source, and hos you verify a site is up/down?
Do you know what signs or tests could be done on these robust services that would tip off an attack?
That is a bold statement. Google has ~1/3 of the world who have access to the internet as regular users. Apple is a hardware maker with a very desirable array of products. I won't say I am a fan of Oracle, and I agree with you on how the lifecycle of enterprise adoption works, but that is a very far fetched conclusion.
First, large companies need to adapt quicker; while this has always been the case, the pace is accelerating. As pointed out above, Oracle has done some shit to alienate a lot of people, and have been for a while.
New companies grow up to be "enterprise". While they ard gouging and alienating their current customers and potential employees, people are NOT building on Oracle. They aren't being locked in.
As old companies (or their management) retire Oracle will have adoption rates like cobol. I am not saying tomorrow, nor this year, but Oracle is going to make big changes or see their MRR fade out with the salesy slicks who brought them on board 2 decades ago.
Surely, we should stand against such a law, and I will. But let us not do so at the expense of more dangerous and less publicized attempts to curtail freedom. This will be fought on many fronts and is much bigger than immigration. We stand to have surveillance bolstered, restriction in our movements, loss of input in our governments behavior & worse. We are entering into a world war-- which is already being fought publicly; and we need to work as a country & the global community for diplomacy and freedom.
That said, SO should link the duplicate question to the answer question if it does exist. It would stop this behavior and be very useful
- Not Comprehensive - Not wholly accurate - Difficult to keep updated - Not all sourced/vergiable or unsourced
Which is totally fair, except that would apply to a lot of articles...
I like nightshift, don't get me wrong, but I've never met someone who based their software ecosystem on a vendor provided way to change the color temp...
Quora and Yelp are ao user-hostile I try to not even open their links. The mobile homepage is literally oath signin buttons...that is it. The blog article on mobile has the large follow button fixed to the bottom of screen, hoping I fat finger it to bail me out of my fav app (a browser) and put it on my device.
On a computer, at least browsing some questions is possible, but it is annoying they won't let non-technical users just see these questions on the mobile web.
I am sure spam & ad revenue is better for them, but there was a time where developers focused on making an app/site useful to attract signups. To be fair, Quora has never done this, but others have followed shit in te last 2-3 years.
I hope this is useful to some, maybe I'll even play with the data, but I can't support Quora by visiting the actual site.
You should trust employees who have a good track record to work remotely if they want and are sufficiently operating independently.
JR employees should be allowed to work part time remotely after some time in office.
There isnt a good way to inprint culture remotely, and there is a learning curve for jr devs who need senior devs for support/the internal support structure. So most Incs would be in bad shape if all there strong engineering talent worked from 6pm to 9am (as I would left to my own devices) because their jr devs wouldnt grow and other devs with supporting software on dif schedules have to wait.
Tldr not all offices are open plan, growing a team (culturally & skill-wise) is easier in the office, part-time remote work and coordination is a good tradeoff/reward for employees of all skillsets and functions.
Ellen, you're not only wrong about censorship which shouldve been proven to you-- but you're not making the right case. Trump potentially shouldn't have Twitter. however, the internet isn't going to stop being offensive, nor is Trump the only offensive person on the internet.
The most core tenet of America is freedom of belief. Like Henry, I think I think Pao is wrong and what she says is horribly damaging because it notmalizes censorship much as the "fake news/only trust us" meme; BUT I would spend my lifetime fighting for her right to say it.
Linux is great. I have been coding/learning/programming for almost 3 years and there is a lot of knowledge neccessary to be productive-- in any environment. There have been a large amount of these "os x alternative posts"; and I agree with them.
Apple is alienating people like me-- not just the archetypal guru ninjas who contribute to the kernal or live in vim. I just bought a used 2011 15" macbook pro. The 2012 mbp are really the last year that could be hardware updated. I have a flashdrive with bootable yosemite and a carbon copy of one of my hard drives that run Yosemite. This is because if you upgrade you can't revert to previous gens. Sometimes even when testing a beta.
I am ALL for progression, it would be AWESOME if people updated their browsers and the web could push forward-- but os x has gotten worse. El capitan & sierra are pretty bad imo and many others.
Also, the hardware is leaving a lot to be desired. Also, linux is rising, shit even Microsoft is making software for linux. Apple is barely competing in the "pro" space.
I am sure people will still decelop plenty of hq apps for iphone and macos but with Linux, Android and Microsoft making such obvious pains to win devs, this could be a mistake.
I am running 2 OS back on a 5 year old hardware and the experience is only alightly worse than when I had a 2015 maxed MBP. Also web platforms are allowing tons of greatvsoftware to be env agnostic.
I am semi sick of these posts, but there is a reason they keep topping HN. A few years ago I remeber PG even calling Apple out. He said something like, he had just unconsciously subscribed to Apples next computer, but it wasnt obvious he would anymore. They weren't keeping up.
OS X was-- and still is, pretty great. Cook is likely making the right business decision in the hub progression:
laptop is hub > cloud is hub > phone is hub
But a little more effort to ship better software and reasonable hardware would go so far. No ports, non-upgradeable, limited memory and SSD storage for fing 1600.
I can punt on a decision for 1-2 more years with current configuration but without marked improvement and inprovement v alternatives i will leave amd so will many other like me-- avg & beginner developers, designers and media(photo/video/music) pros.
Bummed.
America is a community, yes we need "some form of moderation", but we enter into a very slippery slope when anybody but the community chooses what "moderation" means.
Reddit is a decent example-- albeit still flawed; of how this can work. It is states right, sharding, seperation of concerns, or a subreddit type model where small microcosms choose what is acceptable.
I dont agree with the KKK and hate speech is terrible, but if it is limited to speech I am all for it. I, like I assume many, will use my power to ostracize and dissiauade people from being hate mongering racists-- but it is helpful when I can identify who they are when they self-select to dress up like ghosts 365 days a year instead of just the end of october like many other Americans do.
Edit: to be clear, I am all for free speech & freedom to organize-- not all for the kkk obviously...
Promoting censorship is dangerous. Twitter is an option-- NOT a requirement. This is easily the 10th nearly identical article some arrogant reporter has written about their choice not to use a social media service.
Give regular credit card over the phone.
Buy tickets on craigslist (at least not directly supporting TM)
Go a day early, buy tickets at the venue.
Have friend buy extra tickets at the venue.
That said, a public company that has an incomplete product roadmap-- or poduct, shows no profit and has a poorly understood revenue strategy is immature. GM has been public for a comparable amount of time. It is well understood what they do-- they make and sell cars. Twitter aggregates and dynamically prices advertising and monetizes information. It is much harder to understand a new business model and one that is not making money. It was not ready to IPO.
Yes, the market goes up and down. Twitter was a shitty company, still is a shitty company and will be a shitty acquisition. I understood that and I didn't buy it. Thats how the market works.
Edit: While the market goes up and down, Twitter has pretty much just gone down. It was in the 50s 2 years ago and has pretty much just fallen.
Twitter is an example of a company that has had poor performance and may have been to immature to go public.
Reuters and other publishers have rss feeds however they are split accross many categories and also have strict ToU. I have been trying to find news & event feeds that are free to consume; ideally with a headline and article, but simply a blast like "3 trapped in hiking incident in montana cavern" would be useful.
Any resources or experiences would be helpful.
I dont know what will happen after, but this election has been framed as "tampered" and the language and posturing in all media does seem indicative of creating a narrative that will over turn the results
"Ok, google glass, zoom in on that hot guy!".
Voice, a great interface for SOME things. Likely not what this article is pitching.
