voldacar··on Nuclear physicist explains why fusion ignition is hailed as a major breakthrough
Energy is the ability to transform matter from one state to another.

Food is a particular form of matter.

Therefore...

voldacar··on Thomas Pynchon, famously private, sells his archive
>The Huntington is likely to draw a flood of requests to access the Pynchon archive, which it says will be open to qualified researchers after processing, which it estimates will take a year. “The kind of research this archive is going to support is advanced scholarship, literary scholarship,” Brooke said. And the archive, she added, “is not for the casual observer.” The published novels themselves take a lot of time to grapple with,” she said. “The drafts are even more complicated.” As for whether biographers and journalists would be granted access, Brooke said, “We evaluate all requests on a case-by-case basis.”

How delightful. I certainly wouldn't want to read something too complicated.

These people really are a wannabe priestly class

voldacar··on Precise atom manipulation through deep reinforcement learning
They can approximate any continuous map between finite dimensional vector spaces. Complex numbers are a finite dimensional vector space.
voldacar··on The mid in fake midcentury modern
Some of Albert Speer's stuff is pretty cool. Certainly nowhere near the ugliness of anything Le Corbusier designed. Though it definitely does have a kind of austere bloodlessness that is also present in Italian Fascist architecture, sort of monumental yet dead.
voldacar··on The mid in fake midcentury modern
A lot of people responsible for 20th century architecture believed more or less that beauty is Literally Fascism, so that's another component. The ugliness isn't always accidental.
voldacar··on Nervous system manipulation by electromagnetic fields from monitors (2003)
Nice, I'll be paying attention. I've been planning on messing around with tdcs for a while now but I've never sat down and actually built the (admittedly really simple) device needed. Possibly a dumb question but do you have to use electrodes that require that gel substance for good conductivity, or are dry eeg electrodes sufficient? Or is this irrelevant if the signal comes from a current source?
voldacar··on Nervous system manipulation by electromagnetic fields from monitors (2003)
This is interesting — could you link your research? And are these DC fields you're applying using electrodes across the cranium? Or AC using an external coil?
voldacar··on Nervous system manipulation by electromagnetic fields from monitors (2003)
Your comment doesn't add much value here. Which parts do you find implausible? Note that they are referring to CRT monitors, which do emit a strong electromagnetic field

What effect does capitalization have on the model, in general?
voldacar··on Building a Virtual Machine Inside ChatGPT
This reads like a Borges story
voldacar··on The Twitter Files
Nah you are definitely trying to minimize this. At this point it is clear that you have political parties (let's be honest, it's really just one political party, coincidentally the one that receives >99% of twitter's political donations) colluding in secret with high level people in twitter (whose political affiliations, curiously enough, are quite different from a random population sample) to censor a news story that could have a big effect on a national election.

I don't have any particularly strong feelings about Matt Taibbi, I just want to read through these files myself and form my own opinions instead of having reality mediated to me by an Approved Professional

voldacar··on The Twitter Files
Do we get to read the actual files? Or do we only get them mediated to us by Matt Taibbi's summary + some redacted screenshots?
voldacar··on The game theory of John von Neumann transformed the 20th century
It is a serious indictment of our culture that we are not trying to clone von Neumann or even just sequence his genome. His genetic material is slowly decaying in some cemetery in New Jersey, I think.
voldacar··on UK high street banks are quarantining from crypto
>The same people that complain about the impinging government are usually the first to ask for a handout the moment something goes wrong

Really? This doesn't seem to match my experience.

voldacar··on Proof of work is temporarily illegal in New York
It's my computer though, and I'm paying for the electricity to run it. Why is it any business of yours what calculations I run on it? What an absurd statement.

voldacar··on Is wine fake?
It really depends a lot on the region. For example, price and quality don't correlate that much in Burgundy. It's easy to spend a few hundred dollars on a mediocre bottle.
voldacar··on The Joukowski Airfoils (1964) [video]
My complex analysis prof was obsessed with the Joukowski airfoil. The derivation is surprisingly simple and elegant.

voldacar··on Lisp as the Maxwell’s Equations of Software (2012)
What world are you living in where popularity is somehow a way of judging quality? The masses love marvel movies and fast food
voldacar··on The Quest for a Fusion Drive
Yeah the reason is that Richard Nixon cancelled Project Rover, which had long since demonstrated that a safe and reliable nuclear engine was totally feasible

It doesn't have to be a prime, it can also be a prime power
voldacar··on Microneedle patch digs deep to regenerate hair in bald mice
To me it's probably a combination of stress from dht exposure and mechanical stress that causes thinning and baldness once the total stress level around the follicle surpasses some threshold. You can't just dismiss mechanical stress that easily, it would be an insane coincidence for scalp tightness to correlate so closely with dht sensitivity in the absence of any causality.

It's interesting seeing these concepts being created in real time. This seems like the sort of thing that will become popular in new york times articles in the near future.

voldacar··on Ask HN: How can I improve my terrible memory?
- Learn the memory palace technique. It's thousands of years old and really works. People use it to memorize tens of thousands of digits.

- Take B. monnieri. It's not a huge effect but it does seem to have a real positive effect on memory if you take it for a while.

- Practice n-back

- Get good sleep and exercise frequently to optimize your brain health

voldacar··on The Geometry Junkyard
A lot of geometric results like trig identities come out most elegantly when stated using complex numbers. I always struggled remembering trig identites until I took complex analysis, and after that class they just seemed totally obvious.
