Yeah I've read that. I think the connections to Memphis are vastly overstated, and the data on its origins is still not enough for me. Okay, so a particular design company created it in 2017. But which individual humans are responsible for it? And who at Facebook is responsible for the initial idea of commissioning the design work and what it should look like?

Great essay. Has there been any serious research on the origin and history of Alegria? It was created at some specific time by some specific person but I can never seem to find that information. It feels like it just appeared out of nowhere one day and all the world's ruling institutions just adopted it as their aesthetic.

It feels like this kind of language use only came into vogue during the last few decades, but is now extremely common in humanities academia as well as pseudointellectual "cultural" publications such as the New Yorker and this one.

- "an active process of aid" etc. Trying to describe simple or obvious things using vague language with a sort of "conceptual" flavor or affectation. It reminds me a little bit of the "translation" of Ecclesiastes in Orwell's Politics and the English Language but it also has its own distinct flavor. The French are probably to blame, somehow.

edit: Blah blah blah Foucault a few paragraphs in. You can't make this shit up

> You can set a read watchpoint using debugging APIs (ptrace);

What kind of read is sufficient to trigger this? If dota makes a read watchpoint with ptrace, my cheat process calls the linux equivalent of readprocessmemory on the dota process, then dota gets notified by the kernel? So every time a process directly interacts with the memory of another process, the kernel has to look through a list of which processes have called ptrace and run some kind of handler? As an aside it seems like this would be bad for performance of the whole OS

If ptrace is a syscall and ptrace (according to wikipedia) allows one program to intercept and manipulate another program's syscalls, then couldn't I just launch my cheat first, have it ptrace dota, and intercept dota's ptrace call, so that the read watchpoint never gets set up in the first place?

How are they able to afford so many domain names? And what stops the state from just asking the domain registrar for the details of who purchased the domains? Besides, there are only so many domain registrars in the world, eventually you will lose the ability to purchase new domains

And if the actual web server is behind a service like cloudflare, the state can just ask cloudflare for the IP of the real server, then ask the datacenter who owns the server at IP x ...

I mostly agree with this. But the real problem is a meta-problem. Which is that society will never allow this unless everybody becomes some kind of moral nihilist ubermensch overnight. Any kind of (recognizable) deontology would have to be left behind completely. And the socially enforced "ick" reflex (which is MASSIVELY strong in most of the population) is something that can really be overcome only by people who are far right-tail in terms of intelligence or creativity or imagination. Read your comment to the average person on the street and see how they reflexively react. People on this site routinely overestimate the quality of the average human (in literally every possible way) because they only work and interact with above average people. I just don't see how we get from here to there, at least not without some massive alteration of humans, which would only really possible with true BCI or some kind of extreme eugenics effort. But in a world where either of those were possible, head transplanation would be a breeze.
