voidee··on Trust in Firefox and Mozilla Is Gone – Let's Talk Alternatives
Yes, but one of the best alternatives until Ladybird is ready.

Librewolf, Vivaldi, Orion (iOS and macOS only) are all solid options.

voidee··on Show HN: I made a site to quick identify any plant and learn how to care for it
A different product would be evaluated differently based on its usefulness and quality compared to free options.

As many others here stated, there are free trustworthy alternatives like PlantNet and iNaturalist. For now, even Google Lens is more reliable… until Google gets flooded with bad data and AI generated images of plants.

$3 seems like a better entry point for a product to test the market. Equivalent to a cup of coffee in most cities.

voidee··on 2M users but no money in the bank
Yes. Good idea.

Another thing. There are several podcasts who have a free feed and paid one. Sam Harris’ Making Sense comes to mind with their free feed and a paid one for full access to all content. But they understand not everyone can pay. If one is unable to pay, they can simply email to ask for a free annual membership.

Pay what you want albums on Bandcamp are another example of a sliding scale. Suggested price $10, but artists can define their minimum.

voidee··on 2M users but no money in the bank
Yes. Like others here, I did not know there was a paid Insiders tier. Just nudging free users with a “consider becoming an insider” hard sell splash screen upon each login with a 10 second countdown would go a long way towards encouraging users to join Insiders and might be enough to avoid going the ad route. Then you are still offering a free option but I think lots will sign up.

Redesign the donate/payment page for clarity. Enable Apple Pay to reduce friction.

voidee··on Signs that it's time to leave a company
But I love distracting people and making them unproductive!
voidee··on Someone bought 26.9 BTC on Binance and sent it to Satoshi's dead wallet
WCK is one of the best run charities providing food in otherwise hopeless catastrophes and wars. https://thegivingblock.com/donate/world-central-kitchen/
voidee··on Do It Yourself Blind Repair
Excellent. I applaud anyone who helps people repair their own equipment vs trashing it. Some of the repairs I’ve made on appliances have taken days to complete, but it is extremely satisfying once done and they’ve lasted for years.
voidee··on The curse of the goitre in Switzerland
Definitely if they live in an inland region. Seaweed and fish have abundant iodine.
voidee··on Don't Say Velcro (2017)
“Still confused?” LOL, yes!
voidee··on Amazon receives FDA warning letter for supplements with undeclared ingredients
Of course nobody will buy a dangerous product twice. You can’t buy another product after being burned to a crisp!
voidee··on Potato Diet Riff Trial: Sign Up Now, Lol
Only works if the potatoes are McDonald’s fries.
voidee··on Not setting up Find My bricked my MacBook
This story will certainly start a trend of people covering MacBook lids with the most unique sticker combination possible.
voidee··on Ask HN: How do I move forward after being laid off?
Post your resume and skill sets. Join online communities in your field. There are so many remote options now, as you already know from getting a YC company position. Good luck!
voidee··on Italy moves to ban lab-grown meat to protect food heritage
Italy: The population is projected to drop from 60.5 million in 2020 to 54.4 million in 2050, a 10.1% decline. Hopefully they don’t ban lab grown people!
voidee··on Launch HN: Electric Air (YC W23) – Heat pump sold directly to homeowners
WOW.
voidee··on 200-year old heat pump technology is back
Following! Thanks for the link.

A standard to compare costs would be ideal. Right now in the US, your best bet is to repeatedly mention energy efficiency in the listing and use a realtor who understands how to market it. Provide monthly bills to show actual usage and use the analytics which most energy companies and smart thermostats provide. Being able to show 50% energy usage compared to average homes in your area helps homebuyers understand the benefits.
voidee··on Dell to layoff 6,650 employees as demand for PCs plummets
Thanks for pointing this out.

What kind of infrared heater did you use? Heat bulb, floor heater, other? TIA

What IR heaters did you purchase? TIA!
voidee··on Morning exposure to deep red light improves declining eyesight
Curious if anyone has instrumentation to measure wavelengths for something like this. For instance, I have a 60” TV. What output would a #FF0000 image produce at full brightness?
voidee··on Five mildly anti-Buddhist essays
I echo your sentiments as I was first introduced to the practice many many years ago through JK’s writings and recordings. Years of recordings are available on the Dharma Seed app as well.
voidee··on Software horror show: SAP Concur
I’ve no doubt that you have many anti-Concur club members here! Whenever they make “improvements” it breaks something. Monthly Concur expense reports are torture, possibly being the only part of my job I consistently dislike. Can anyone recommend better alternatives to lobby my company to try?
voidee··on Jazz Is Freedom
Great list! Thanks.
voidee··on VanillaOS: Immutable Ubuntu-Based Linux
Fedora Silverblue certainly seems popular here. I use it regularly and it’s been solid. I’m not sure how many people use Silverblue, but I recommend evaluating it!
voidee··on Investigation on the effect of oral breathing on cognitive activity (2021)
I think it really depends on the severity of the deviation and blockage. Before I I had the surgery, the difference between nostrils was significant. Left side was normal and the right was like breathing through a very small diameter straw. Post surgery, I sleep much better and rarely snore. I feel more comfortable when running or biking long distances while only breathing through my nose. Do yourself a favor and get an evaluation if you have a blockage or deviated septum!
voidee··on Amazon packages burn in India, final stop in broken recycling system
I ordered a small item from Amazon about a few months ago and it came in a paper envelope which was light weight but padded with a corrugated paper mesh which was not rigid like cardboard. At the time I thought, “This is the perfect replacement for those plastic blue and white envelopes!” But every small item since then has been shipped in the standard plastic envelopes. I don’t know what it would take to change all to these soft paper envelopes. If all retailers changed to these, it would be so much easier to recycle.
voidee··on Amazon packages burn in India, final stop in broken recycling system
Yes! Metal is extremely recyclable. I think the biggest problem was the move to single stream in nearly every US municipality. We should have 3 different bins. This requires more personal responsibility and more infrastructure, but it is far easier to separate at the waste source than in a massive dump of every crushed together in India or elsewhere.

I’ve used BuyNothing many times in my city. I’ve mostly used it to give things away, but have scored some great camping gear too. It’s been a very positive experience compared to listing free items on Facebook or Craigslist. People on BuyNothing have been responsible and grateful.
