voidUpdate··on I love LLMs, I hate hype
You mean there are terminator films after T3?
voidUpdate··on The Graph That Should Be Front-Page News
I doubt my single comment about the design choices of the article is turning people off from seeing what the article is about. I'm stressing that the graph is actually important to see, not saying "the design is bad so you shouldn't read this article". And given people's attention spans these days, I'd imagine reading 14 paragraphs to find the graph the title talks about might be non-trivial
voidUpdate··on The console wars have been lost
Steam does exactly that for me, thought when I'm casually using my computer, not when my computer has gone to sleep. But since Valve controls the whole steam machine ecosystem, I'd imagine it would be possible for the steam machine to do the same sleep-updates as xbox
voidUpdate··on The console wars have been lost
Well yes, but if we are assuming that console games need to update, pc games would also need to update
voidUpdate··on A graph that should be front-page news
Good design will absolutely improve public reception
voidUpdate··on The console wars have been lost
Console games need to update too. I don't know how the steam machine handles it, but steam downloads updates for my games in the background, so if it goes to sleep instead of doing a full power off, it might be able to keep games updated while you're not playing too
voidUpdate··on The Graph That Should Be Front-Page News
That's a lot of assumptions about me based on "the important figure should be at the top of the page, not the bottom". Joe Average isn't going to want to read 14 paragraphs before getting to the actual graph the title mentions
voidUpdate··on The console wars have been lost
Valve fixed it by making a console that plays PC games, rather than making a PC
voidUpdate··on The console wars have been lost
People want the convenience. Generally , a console "just works", whereas a PC is more likely to need some messing about to get working optimally. Console devs have one target hardware that they can target, whereas PC games could be run on a huge variety of hardware

How many people living in doghouses does it take to offset emissions from large industry?
voidUpdate··on A graph that should be front-page news
If it should be front-page news, shouldn't it also be at the top of the article, rather than right at the bottom?
voidUpdate··on Tracking unique visitors without cookies
"The Internet" is paid for by my ISP bills. "Websites" are paid for by advertising people trying to track my every move when they don't need to
voidUpdate··on Guy took Jupiter photo with Game Boy Camera, giant telescope, publishes tutorial
I've used a gameboy camera recently. It took some lovely pictures once it was adjusted properly. I just suspect that there might have been problems with dynamic range etc that made it particularly difficult to take a picture of jupiter?
voidUpdate··on Tracking unique visitors without cookies
Does advertising absolutely need to track people? Advertising existed for a long time without having to know exactly who would look at the ad
voidUpdate··on Tracking unique visitors without cookies
I thought the internet was powered by paying your ISPs bill
voidUpdate··on Tracking unique visitors without cookies
What if we just don't track people? Crazy idea, I know...
voidUpdate··on Guy took Jupiter photo with Game Boy Camera, giant telescope, publishes tutorial
That's... honestly kinda underwhelming. You can't even see any stripes, it's just a vague blob. I guess the contrast was just too much for the Gameboy camera?
voidUpdate··on I love LLMs, I hate hype
I mean all of the Terminator films are essentially "Machines took over the world. John Connor will eventually defeat the machines. The leader of the machines sent a machine back in time to prevent John Connor defeating the machines"
voidUpdate··on Backtrack-Free Cursive
You only need 1 backtrack if you do the dots and crosses after you've written the word

Having the colour of your links be very close to the default colour of links you've already clicked is an interesting style choice
voidUpdate··on No leap second will be introduced at the end of December 2026
I enjoy how Chrome asks me if I want to auto translate from German to English. Where did it get German from? It's French!
voidUpdate··on Postgres rewritten in Rust, now passing 100% of the Postgres regression tests
I wonder how long this will be maintained for...
voidUpdate··on A bug which affected only left handed users
I've learnt to mouse and keyboard the right handed way because it would just be too much hassle to switch over every setup I'm presented with. It does make me atrocious at drawing with a mouse though
voidUpdate··on A bug which affected only left handed users
I can usually twist my hand to push the blades together, but the cut line is always hidden by the top blade for me
voidUpdate··on 3D Airplane tracker on Mercator map
> "the world's moving things: [...], submarine cables"

I hope not, that sounds a bit concerning if the cables are moving around enough to track

voidUpdate··on Rewriting Bun in Rust
I wonder how much the authors now understand their project? Like, if they were given a bug, would they be able to intuit a possible location in their files that might be causing it? Or are they now essentially locked in to using LLMs to write/rewrite their code?

voidUpdate··on The Clouds of Hiroshima
I've not heard testimonies by those survivors, no, but I have heard about a lot of other burn victims and survivors in mass casualty events.

How about we both don't have nuclear weapons and also don't carpet bomb people?

voidUpdate··on The Clouds of Hiroshima
Nuclear devices existed way before Putin. Currently, many countries hold the trigger. I appreciate that my wishing doesn't change anything, but I can't exactly do much about it concretely
voidUpdate··on The Clouds of Hiroshima
Depends, do you consider death by burns and smoke inhalation to be worse than death by having your skin stripped off by the blast, your appendages completely burned off in an instant, people completely losing their mind, pregnant women dying and having their unborn children exposed to the open air? I've heard all of those in testimonies from survivors.

Yes, both of those events are terrible and shouldn't have happened, but which is "worse" probably depends on if you consider more deaths or worse deaths to be "worse"
