voidUpdate··on Supersonic Trebuchet [video]
I'm pretty sure the only reason the video trebuchet wasn't a proper bullet is because it's made out of plastic instead of a ball bearing. Aren't most handguns subsonic?
voidUpdate··on And then the men with guns tell you to do it anyway
That works until you have a sudden and unexpected situation such as "There is an epidemic of black death, please remain indoors" which you didn't account for, and now you have to tell everyone that the country has been beset by the whooping palsy instead and hope the intent comes through
voidUpdate··on Teaching my kid to code with a modern MUD
Looks like it's just dithered pixel art. The JS in the page isn't obfuscated, and I'm not an expert but it looks like the image is being dynamically generated, and then there's a bayer dithering with some extra random jitter
voidUpdate··on How Bluesky draws its logo on screenshots
No, and that's not what bluesky is doing
voidUpdate··on How Bluesky draws its logo on screenshots
They don't respond to it. It simply says "this button is part of sensitive content", and the OS itself hides the sensitive content, revealing the image below it
voidUpdate··on A particle made of force: physicists say they've found mysterious 'glueball'
"practically finished and ready to go" is a bit of an overstatement. They made some holes in the ground, and did preliminary research and manufacturing, but it was heavily mismanaged and fantastically over budget, so congress killed it
voidUpdate··on How Bluesky draws its logo on screenshots
That's what bluesky is doing in this case. It is showing the button on an area that is "invisible to screenshots", and the butterfly is behind it, so it shows through when a screenshot is taken
voidUpdate··on The Median Voter Is a Maoist
Well, the fact that the article says they cannot help pay
voidUpdate··on Why is this 15 year old still in Morocco and not in some big company?
Generally, you don't employ children
voidUpdate··on The Median Voter Is a Maoist
> "because the things they scapegoat – on the Left, the billionaires, on the Right, foreigners – cannot pay for more than a pittance of what they want done"

Why can't billionaires help pay for it?

voidUpdate··on Anthropic's 'watermark' text adulteration in Claude is a perversion of writing
They're not trying to make the watermark undetectable, that would defeat the point of a watermark. They're making it detectable, but not make the text obviously watermarked

> "Nothing is aligned"

The first two items in each row are aligned, and each item is aligned to one of two columns

> "Buttons are touching"

The only buttons that are touching are the + and - buttons which are part of the number input, as they are one connected part, and the units dropdown which is also part of the number selection in one item

voidUpdate··on Anthropic's ‘watermark’ text adulteration in Claude is a perversion of writing
Have you compared pre- and post-watermarked text to make that assertion? And I'm not sure how writing your own text if you care deeply about the word choice is handicapping the technology?
voidUpdate··on Anthropic's ‘watermark’ text adulteration in Claude is a perversion of writing
I'll be interested to see if people can actually pick out which text is watermarked and which isn't once they introduce it. It won't switch "bananas" to "airplanes". It'll switch "I really enjoy eating bananas" to "I love eating bananas" or similar
voidUpdate··on Anthropic's ‘watermark’ text adulteration in Claude is a perversion of writing
LLMs do a whole lot more than writing your thoughts down. They write extra text. If you just want a pen and paper, use Notepad. Or better, a pen and paper
voidUpdate··on Anthropic's ‘watermark’ text adulteration in Claude is a perversion of writing
> "The exact words we choose when writing matter."

Then write your own damn text if you care about the exact wording so much

voidUpdate··on Design 3D-printable parts by talking
> "It asks for the real dimension instead of inventing one."

Shortly after

> "Make an adapter that connects my shop vac hose to the dust port on my table saw" > "Done: Ø57.6 → Ø35.0 · 74 mm"

is interesting. When did it ask for the dimensions?

voidUpdate··on I built a 500k-domain search engine for makers in a weekend for $10

voidUpdate··on 2026 Eclipse Webcams
It still started in russia though, even if nobody was there to see it
voidUpdate··on 2026 Eclipse Webcams
If you pan to the right, it shows that it actually starts in a bit of russia

voidUpdate··on Dropbox is an obvious PE Target?
Oh, I didn't know about that

Joe Public has no idea what an "FTP" is and just wants a program they can download that does it all for them
voidUpdate··on $580M undersea cable rerouted to avoid the grave of Dobby the House Elf
If it's a legal requirement to have the government check for hidden people before you do building, why do they need to hide the fact they did it? I'm not a Christian but I'm pretty sure I'd still need to deconsecrate a church before knocking it down
voidUpdate··on Show HN: Modern Browsers Don't Need the Cookie Anymore
> "Your CPU is ARM-family — we know from a single subtraction"

Not sure what went wrong for you but I'm running an i9

> "Your battery is at 100%"

I don't think my desktop computer has a battery

> "Microphones attached = 1, Audio outputs attached = 1"

Windows audio settings shows 3 inputs and 5 outputs currently

"TOO LOW – TERRAIN" vwoop vwoop
voidUpdate··on No Data Centers in My Backyard
> "The EMF reader is shakier, going haywire under the crackling power lines, then settling down a few steps away"

That kind of statement really bothers me. Is it measuring the magnetic fields or RF emissions? If it's RF, what frequency? If the EMF reader is picking up radio waves, I'm not exactly concerned. Visible light would be weird. X-rays would be very concerning. Is it just picking up the 50/60Hz power line? That's all around you in your house anyway. If you just don't like power lines, say that

Didnt meta violate copyright by torrenting terabytes of books and use them as training data? Theyve all probably done it but we have concrete evidence of meta doing it
