It's a much better app, user experience-wise. I prefer Signal for obvious reasons, but WhatsApp is easier to use (and has a much better web interface).

WhatsApp allegedly uses an implementation of the OpenWhisper encryption system that Signal created (and still uses). However as there is no source code available unlike Signal, there's no way to verify if WhatsApp "really" is using it (or using it correctly).

A buddy of mine is Special Forces (U.S.). He said JSOC recently banned use of WhatsApp and encouraged everyone to switch to the open-source Signal (another encrypted messaging app). Allegedly WhatsApp uses Signal's encryption (OpenWhisper) but I stopped trusting it the second Facebook bought them out.

I had that same problem years ago (US customer here), but as of....2015 or so? it seems to have improved quite a bit. Now I rarely lose signal entirely when in buildings.

Incidentally, there's a great write-up by Digital Foundry on why Crysis still melts modern CPUs, and is still CPU-limited.

https://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-2018-why-c...

"Not a trick, not an illusion. Yes, this 2007 game is running at under 40fps on the fastest CPUs money can buy."

It's unfortunately not AMD, but I recently got the 2019 ThinkPad X1 Carbon and love it. It was spendy (~$1300 for 512GB SSD, 16 GB RAM, 1440p screen and 8th gen i7 w/ vPro), but the build quality is excellent, and battery life on Mint 19.2 x64 is insane (~13 hours web browsing @ 50% brightness).

Only negative is the Ethernet jack requires a $30 proprietary adapter from Lenovo. Apparently to keep the chassis thin they couldn't fit the full-size RJ-45 port.

A solution I've found is to listen on 1.7x speed. Originally I bumped to 1.3x, but over time your brain adjusts and has no problem following along at faster speeds.

You can also just do "youtube-dl U7VwtOrwceo"

No need to tell it best quality; it does that automatically.

...did you not actually read his post?

Couldn't be more wrong. I deleted my account the moment they did that. Human rights are more important than a video game. There's plenty of other games to play from companies that don't actively support oppressive regimes.

Just my personal anecdote, I run Mint 19.2 x64 on my X1 Carbon and love it, no issues beyond some initial fiddling to get my hotkeys set up the way I like.

Why did Apple ever remove MagSafe? Makes no sense to me.

I left the NSA after 4 years because I didn't want to support some of the things going on there. Can't dismantle it, but can at least not contribute.

I typically request my check immediately upon receiving the food. That way I can leave whenever I'm ready and not sit around waiting.

That's hilarious, I wonder how much that ended up costing them?

Probably too late to contribute to the discussion, but I chose Windows Batch for the Tron project (https://old.reddit.com/r/TronScript) because it's super reliable and works on every version of Windows.

I would assume...(guess?) that FreeDOS will continue to exist in VM's to support extremely old industrial control systems (for example, one of the major dairy plants in my hometown of Phoenix, which still uses [last I checked, 2016] software running in a VM on actual DOS). Beyond that however, maybe outside of educational scenarios, I can't see it sticking around much longer as the move to pure EFI continues full steam.

Wait...I have a legitimate question (was about to post some snarky comment but now I'm wondering).

WHY did you need DOS??? Use an XP VM? Some sort of Linux emulator? Flashing the firmware on a device manufactured long after the existence of DOS had been forgotten for most major hardware producers...

so many questions!

DOSBox is a better option, if you have any interest in playing really old DOS games (Captain Comic, Commander Keen, Descent, etc) on a modern system. As far as running FreeDOS...it's a cool exercise in preserving compatibility for historical systems, but for the average PC enthusiast....doesn't offer much beyond that.

Proceed with the pitchforks and stake burning.

Monero for the win....the only truly fully anonymous cryptocurrency. Even if it never takes off, the existence of privacy-oriented coins like it can help influence public awareness of the importance of financial and personal privacy.

At least in crypto, that's why things like the Ledger or Trezor are really important, at least if you're storing any non-de-minimus amount. Protects against things like 0-days, etc.

Can you stream from a local media source, e.g. SMB share?

This is why I wrote the Tron project (https://old.reddit.com/r/TronScript) in batch. It's a huge pain, but batch ALWAYS works and doesn't change, unlike PowerShell v1/2/3/etc. More work, but works on everything from XP to 10 v.whatever.

Literally the only use is digital monetary instruments. Maybe "smart contracts." Everything else? Nope.

What is Carmack up to these days? Last I heard he was still fiddling with VR stuff and doing rocket hobbyist projects on the side?

I'm going to get downvoted for this, but you don't have to state "IMHO" or any variation of that in your posts. You are the one posting it; we know it's your opinion. It just adds grammatical clutter and noise to an otherwise well thought-out post.

IMHO

This is why I oppose "cloud services" at all points unless it's absolutely something we can't do ourselves. The second you start relying on another business for a critical service, you've ceded control of your operation. In house is more work, but worth it in the long run.

Someone you pay to care about your stuff will never care about it as much as someone who works and maintains it themselves.

Is that still true these days? I was under the impression they required a phone number now, or something else "real-world" to tie to.

Path of Exile (free to play) is surprisingly good and feels more "Diablo" than Diablo 3 did. Highly recommended if you're itching for Diablo 2-style gameplay.
