vmurthy··on Taiwan presidential hopeful offers pets in push to boost birth rate
Seems like an odd choice of incentive. I have young kids and the idea of having to look after another being is quite difficult to even think about!
vmurthy··on LeCun: Qualcomm working with Meta to run Llama-2 on mobile devices
> enable functionality while maintaining data privacy

Ah but is it in (insert any ad business big-tech company)'s best interests to do this? Do they already have so much data that these user <> LLM interactions are only marginal that they don't care about harvesting the data ?

vmurthy··on The “three things” exercise for getting things out of talks (2011)
> the same as writing things down Ah, I could go down this rabbit hole but (after a lot of trial and error), I have come to a (reasonably working) method. It's not enough to write down what you hear/see . I find it so much better to link what you write down to something you already know. That way, things tend to stick longer. Otherwise the notes are just that -- a random collection of things you have written down. No idea if they will ever surface in your memory.
vmurthy··on Kevin Mitnick has died
:-(. Always sad to hear such news. Stay strong mate!
vmurthy··on Ask HN: What’s the best GUI you’ve ever used for managing/querying databases?
My use case is a bit different (I am a PM) but I found what pyCharm offers very useful for my use case (Postgres) . I don't create or manage DBs if that helps.

They have a tool called DataGrip as well [1]

vmurthy··on Ask HN: Any software engineers here that switched to a business/sales role?
Backend developer -> Product Manager . Experience was smooth. I have always worked with startups as PM . I get to code a few things for ad-hoc reports etc.

I learnt to deal with sales types and ensure that my engineers don't get crushed with conflicting priorities (my main job actually).

vmurthy··on [dead]
Given that this article doesn’t share a context, I’m going out on a limb and ask if this is regarding Sam Altman and OpenAI? He was showcased on both NYT and WSJ ..
vmurthy··on Why Should I Buy a Life Insurance Plan?
The key is "term insurance" . I'll explain : In India, there is something called moneyback insurance , unit linked insurance plans (ULIPs) etc. All these combine the (worst) features of investments and insurance - they are too costly, don't give much returns and certainly don't give enough cover. I have advised people I know not to touch these. Instead, use a combination of term insurance + any other instrument (like equity mutual funds or bonds or even bank deposits)

Term insurance is just that : if something happens to the insured, his/her family get the benefits .

vmurthy··on Ask HN: What “special” app you are using?
- AutoSleep (iOS + watchOS) [0]

I bought it when my Apple watch didn't yet have a sleep tracker and have used it for the last 2 years. Good one! Has helped me understand what works for me and what doesn't. I use the iOS app for analysis.

A sample of my findings :

1. I sleep very well when I have done some hatha yoga exercises + eating early

2. I sleep pretty well when I eat early and eat mostly salads

3. Beer ruins my sleep (no surprise, really!)

4. Cheesy/foods heavy in spices make my sleep bad and my energy levels in the morning low

vmurthy··on Ask HN: What is your minimal WFH exercise routine?
While I don't do it, a lot of people I know (online) swear by treadmill desk. Walk + work.

I personally stick to hatha-yoga (physical stretches etc) and one kettlebell for my shoulder.

vmurthy··on Reasons a Raspberry Pi Belongs in Your Network Lab
> Just needs a hdmi capture dongle and USB-C power/data splitter.

Do you recommend any? The one that I saw (recommended by PIKVM DIY site) is 40+ USD just for the capture dongle

vmurthy··on Ask HN: What's the Best Git Book?
As it turns out, I have been having fun with the plumbers guide to git [0]. While it's not a book, it is a way to understand the inner workings of Git . Think of it as first principles. The book "Pro Git" linked by @kgodey has a few chapters related to this "plumbing" [1]

vmurthy··on Ask HN: How to build out a startup in the medtech space?
Have worked as a PM at a (now defunct) medtech company. A few lessons:

- The distinction between a user and a customer is a big one here. Customer pays for your stuff. User uses it. These two are usually light years apart in terms of what they want

- Fine balance to build for the user but also keep the customer happy

- Doctors care about their work and don't want to change too many things since it there's a cognitive cost

- Any language that hints at making doctors redundant is an obvious no-no (Here's looking at you , AI)

- Long sales cycles. Be prepared for cash burn

- I'll type more tomorrow when I wake up :)

vmurthy··on Ask HN: How to deal with regret of not having kids
@OP : Sorry to hear that you are suffering. To give you a bit of perspective - I think couples who have kids will regret some bit of it. There are things that are inconvenient , there will be missed opportunities either way. So don't think that the feelings you have of regret will go away if you have kids.

It's a conscious choice: You can use IVF / adoption other means to have kid(s) but be aware that once you take the decision of having kid(s), you can't really go back even if you feel helpless,anxious etc:)

Signed, Dad of two kids

vmurthy··on Six Indian Institutes Boycott Times Higher Education World University Rankings
tl;dr The heads of the institutes (6 IITs) need transparency in how the rankings are arrived at. I don't know why this was a whole article,really
vmurthy··on Trauma from the Holodomor genocide continues down through generations
There was a Dutch famine during WW2 [0]. The health problems from that famine got transmitted across generations. It's literally in the genes. Epigenetics ,as it is called

vmurthy··on Ask HN: What Are Some Good 2FA Service Provider?
In my previous company, we had a lot of good things to say about OKTA. They have the authentication service [0] of course and then Adaptive MFA . Good luck!

vmurthy··on Ask HN: What are the productive ways of using a smartphone?
- Disable all notifications

- Audible

- Some podcast app

- No social media apps. I mean literally none

- Zero apps on Home Screen

Works like a charm for me

vmurthy··on $55 board turns a Raspberry Pi CM4 into a router

vmurthy··on My customized Wim Hof breathing method
The author's blog post should come with a disclaimer :) .

A while ago I tried a few breathing techniques which were given in a nice book [0]. I really enjoyed the after-effects of the said techniques so I decided to mix and match some of them etc. The effects were awesome .. at first.

After a couple of weeks, I started feeling very low for no particular reason (no dietary changes or anything) and just downright weird. I eliminated one factor after another and checked if my energy levels were OK. I finally gave up the experiment on breathing techniques and restarted what was in the book. I am good, now.

So.. despite a sample size of one and a trial which wasn't random or controlled (:)) , my advice on this whole thing : Get a qualified teacher and do what is taught. YMMV otherwise.

vmurthy··on Save the Soil
> Wow! One of the biggest con man has made it to HN as well?

Leaving aside whether you believe what he says, any citations on being a con man? Let alone the biggest con man?

>For those who really worry about soil and the facts spoken or presented by him, it is a total garbage and it done purely as a publicity stunt so that people will start buying the so called blessed soil from him (??).

Oh wow. That seems like the biggest publicity stunt, then , no? If heads of state are buying into this, this must be a very sophisticated plan.

> Buying the blessed soil (whose soil is it anyway?) will save the soil from degrading? Poeple get to buy some soil samples blessed (!!??) by this conman and keep it in their homes and expect the soil is saved while he happily walks towards the bank laughing about people's stupidity!!!

I didn't see a buy link in the web archive (the link is HN'ed), but perhaps you could enlighten us what you think he does with the money?

> educating people about sustainable living and introducing technology guidance, reducing dependencies and a changed economic models

You hit the nail on the head. This article seems to be about educating people about sustainable living and the dangers we humans pose to nature. Geniunely curious , what exactly are you so upset about? Sadhguru's teachings ? His article? Hidden agendas ?

vmurthy··on Stripe cuts internal valuation by 28%
Totally agree. Just something to watch out for. If the market is giving a multiple of 25 today and it drops to 10 in a year , one needs to be aware that’s all
vmurthy··on Stripe cuts internal valuation by 28%
> So $74b is probably about right or maybe even low?

Of course you are assuming that Adyen is somewhat fairly valued :) . That's the problem with comparative valuations IMO. If company A valuation = company B valuation and company A itself is overvalued, it doesn't mean they are both fairly valued,no?

vmurthy··on Bitcoin Falls Below $20k
>Fortunately in what sense? You're talking as if BTC was worth nothing. 19K is still a really good price if you zoom out.

Fortunate in the sense that I learnt that the only way to reliably value any asset is to calculate cash-flows -- for me anyway. There are a million things (BTC,ETH whatever) in which you can invest and some of them will make money but I learnt these weren't for me because I can neither predict how high/low something can go

> I understand young people whose first investment was BTC 1 year ago and bought at 60k and are -70%. But if you have been investing for 10+ years as you mention then there's nothing fortunate about not having bought BTC.

Investing in company stocks that I somewhat understand, yes. Fortunate about not having bought BTC .. well. I don't seem to understand how BTC can be worth anything at all so I didn't/won't :)

vmurthy··on Bitcoin Falls Below $20k
When you see people you think are not as smart as you get rich via crypto, it is very natural to think that you should go at it, too. Fortunately, about 10-12 years of stock market investing showed me a lot of patterns. There will be stories, there will be wondrous companies that seem to grow magically and yet what lies beneath is most critical. Cash flow and the embedded estimate in the market cap vis-a-vis this cash flow (reverse DCF). W.r.t crypto, I never could fathom a cash flow or what a certain value for a bitcoin actually represented. I took a pass (probably my profits would have been 3x at max with BTC at $20k) , but useful to remember this when another new fangled thing makes others rich.
vmurthy··on Lead poisoning probably did not cause the downfall of the Roman Empire
If you look at _any_ complex event (war , disease , great success , great failure) you can use the same rule of thumb. As an example, did Europe in the middle ages succeed only because of science and technology? Did they take more risks because they could get credit? It's all layers and makes for a richer understanding of the world :)
vmurthy··on The rise and fall of Cathie Wood, controversial Wall Street investor
>A similar thing happened with Bear Stearns. It beat the market consistently every month... until it didn't. IIRC it blew up very very quickly

Very subtle difference,though. I am simplifying things here but IIRC, Bear Stearns blew up because they wrote insurance for things they didn't think would ever happen (housing mkt going down) and had a lot of exposure vis-a-vis how much premium they collected (i.e. sold a put -- limited upside , unlimited downside). I doubt ARKK has _written_ put options. It might be the case that the value of the ETF will go down drastically but they won't go bust because of liabilities.

vmurthy··on Ask HN: Best book on modern cryptography?
Lol. I’ve read part of this book but didn’t see the full title. This is a book by Simon Singh.

vmurthy··on Mental illness, mass shootings, and the politics of American firearms (2015)
Quite a quick read and sounds somewhat better than knee-jerk reactions people might have

The 3 policy changes in the paper :

``` Evidence suggests that three priority policies would have the greatest impact in reducing overall firearm homicide rates:
• Universal background checks;
• Prohibition of gun possession by people with a history of any violent misdemeanor, threatened violence, or serious alcohol-related crime or subject to a domestic violence restraining order. This must be accompanied by: (1) a requirement that firearms already in their possession be surrendered; (2) a procedure for confiscating guns if they are not relinquished voluntarily; and (3) procedures for confiscating guns in situations where a person becomes prohibited from owning firearms after having passed an earlier background check;
• Extreme risk protection order laws that allow removal of firearms from an individual who, after due process, is deemed to represent a threat to themselves or others
```
