vmladenov··on GameStop stock soars after 'Roaring Kitty' reveals $175M bet
There is a world in which EU digital markets regulations force platform holders to sell (far more than they do now) codes for digital games through GameStop and they become an online-only retailer.
vmladenov··on Gov. Polis Signs Bill Mandating That Consumers Have Options to Fix Electronics
This kind of behavior is why I have no problem with manufacturers moving towards digital camera-based sideview mirrors. Plenty of experience being blinded especially at night, very grateful for the "flip up" trick on the rearview that cuts brightness.

I like this list

Even for just corn, 1.8kg of food a day to hit 2000 calories is gonna take some effort.

vmladenov··on Morgan Spurlock has died
I don’t recall coming away from Fast Food Nation with the impression that McD improved things, but it has been many years. I thought the book focused on how agribusiness increased the risk of contamination by pathogens like E. coli and the effects of marketing to children.
vmladenov··on US drug control agency will move to reclassify marijuana
If it is voluntary, repeated, and the person of sound mind, I can't see why the government should prevent a terminal patient who is in constant pain from dying with dignity on their own terms.

> Relativity is kind of the trivia of physics, it really has not informed much technology apart from a few things in space

GPS is kind of a huge one, though it technically is just a few clocks in space.

vmladenov··on The new Windows update made me think I'd installed malware
But I wasn’t talking about video games; I have a Steam Deck and I like it. I have lots of old / unmaintained Windows software for various gadgets that doesn’t have alternatives and has major blocking issues in Wine-like environments, up to and including failing to launch. For those, a Windows VM or a dedicated Windows system is much less of a headache.
vmladenov··on Two nights of broken sleep can make people feel years older, finds study
> and how little mass 1500 calories is

Or how much, depending on what you’re eating. It would be physically impossible for me to eat 1500 calories of lettuce in a day (10kg worth) but it definitely aids in “feeling full” when added to a meal.

vmladenov··on Two nights of broken sleep can make people feel years older, finds study
By this logic, one could run an army legion without food supplies simply by keeping them sleep deprived.
vmladenov··on The new Windows update made me think I'd installed malware
There's no real alternative for many things people care about. Windows 11 can still run Windows 98 software with minimal headache. Maybe Valve with Proton will get there someday. If it's not your daily driver e.g. using a MacBook for day-to-day, it's tolerable albeit annoying. Just go make a coffee while boot hangs on the "preparing windows updates" screen for 5 minutes.
vmladenov··on 4 Internal Apple Emails That Helped the DOJ Build Its Case
The big killer app for BBM, iMessage, and WhatsApp was the ability to send text messages for cheap/free relative to expensive and limited carrier SMS, especially on prepaid SIMs, and later to make full phone calls over WiFi. Skype was never this integrated to people’s contact lists and missed the boat with smartphones.

I question the governments decision to include this in the complaint. Surely Visa's 2-3% fee has a greater impact on the wider economy than Apple's 0.15%.

No it isn't. Nearly all of my group chats are mixed iPhone/Android skewing towards iPhone. We use Facebook Messenger
vmladenov··on U.S. sues Apple, accusing it of maintaining an iPhone monopoly
Or you could show an ounce of maturity and just move to a cross-platform messaging app. This antisocial behavior is absolutely crazy to me; maybe it's because my first experiences with IP messaging was Skype and not iMessage. My iMessage-only group chats are the vast minority; Facebook Messenger is where most live, then WhatsApp and some Slack/Discord.

How long until the government mandates that Apple start directly parenting teenagers?
vmladenov··on U.S. sues Apple, accusing it of maintaining an iPhone monopoly
> my friend group has a separate group chat for just android users and they get party invites after the main group does.

This is beyond ridiculous. All of my group chats that need to be cross-platform just move to Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp

That and 6k (21MP) or 18k (63MP) film scans where applicable. Modern formats can’t quite handle that yet but soon, and mixed reality/projection displays will open up screen formats
vmladenov··on Why are most sofas so bad?
I dislike their engineered wood stuff. It’s decent for furnishing an apartment but for more permanent things real hardwood just feels nicer, and IKEA has relatively few options with that material.

I had an engineered wood bed frame from them split in half, whereas an older IKEA pine (not hardwood but whatever) bed frame still lives on.

I’ve never understood this reasoning. Loans need to be repaid at some point, so one must realize some income to pay them back, at which point they will owe tax.
vmladenov··on Rivian software update bricks infotainment system, fix not obvious
BEVs don't eat through tires because they're heavy. They eat through tires because they have fast acceleration and their drivers make use of said acceleration. A Tesla Model 3 weighs around what a BMW M4 weighs and less than all trims of an M5.

vmladenov··on Rivian software update bricks infotainment system, fix not obvious
A lot of silliness has been tossed around about Teslas in this thread so let's be clear about how they work. A Tesla vehicle have two main independent systems:

- The "car" that operates the motors, blinkers, shifting, Autopilot, etc. It also supplies standard readouts via OBD that you can monitor independently e.g. with a phone app. As far as I'm aware, it is impossible to turn this machine off except when the car is stationary, in park, and the brake is fully pressed (or by disconnecting the 400V battery leads under the rear seat).

- The infotainment computer is a small Linux machine that displays the map, speedometer, music, plays the sound of the blinkers through the speakers, and random other stuff. This system can be reset at any time by holding the two scroll wheels.

There are valid things to criticize about this setup e.g. by not having a standard fallback display of speedo, but you can still read speed from OBD at all times. And Tesla has broken things in OTA updates before, but their rollouts are heavily staged. The last major revert I can remember was FSD beta 10.3 in 2021 back when it had reached a few 10s of testers.
