vmfunction··on Don Estridge: A misfit who built the IBM PC
"Heroism doesn't scale"

You can pretty much replace Heroism with Leadership or whatever.

Question is do we really need it to scale?

Corporatism thrived off the back of the industrial revolution. It is not bad, it just has taken us as far as it can go.

Something more decentralised and organic should take place instead of corporatism for large scale human development and space exploration.

vmfunction··on Developer posts secret key on GitHub, loses $40K in 2 minutes
In that scenario, people still need a medium of exchange. Physical medium of exchange such as precious metal and paper currency will still be more reliable than crypto or anything digital. The countries who are enforcing digital currencies are just digging their own graves when a Carrington level of event (or EMP) hits.
vmfunction··on Cancel Adobe if you are a creative under NDA with your clients
I will never every trust real content to be on Cloud of any of these big corp, or any software going towards an online like photoshop is going.

vmfunction··on Kling (Chinese Sora Alternative)
Now that the this geni is out of bottle, China will have quickly the alternative counter part very quickly that openai. Guess LLM works now just as well in Chinese as in English?
vmfunction··on lsix: Like "ls", but for images
There are many terminal users, check their email in terminal, and use browser like Links, Links2, and would like to be able to see pictures sometimes.

Also graphics response in terminal are blazing fast, and compared to whatever is happening in the Apple, MS and Gnome GUI environment that are just getting sluggish by the version upgrade. More and more I just want to do everything in terminal, and not have to deal with all this GPU acceleration BS that is happening. Give me the UI in pixels likes it is 1980's. Most of times just want to do my work, We don't care if there is some anti-aliasing or shadows under the text.

vmfunction··on Creating a Safari webarchive from the command line
Good point on the cache. However things such as putting background image in CSS, so user can right click to download the image is just stupid. Why is css all the sudden in control of the image display? It just makes archiving pages harder.

vmfunction··on Engineering for Slow Internet
>A lot of this resonates. I'm not in Antartica, I'm in Beijing, but still struggle with the internet.

Not even that, with outer space travel, we all need to build for very slow internet and long latency. Devs do need to time-travel back to 2005.

vmfunction··on Bringing Rust to Safety-Critical Systems in Space
>The current state of Rust is a moving target for such tools and design methods. Publish a formal language standard first.

Would it be just easier to use something like OCaml? where it offers the memory safety and a mature language.

vmfunction··on Why did Tom Lehrer swap fame for obscurity?
>Being famous is a 24-hour-a-day job.

That's why, people whom are smart and/or lazy won't touch it.

vmfunction··on Anger Does a Lot More Damage to Your Body Than You Realize
> I was taught it was shameful to be angry, and my main religious experience was with Buddhism, which says anger is always purely bad.

Sorry to hear that you encountered buddhist practitioners who made you think that. Don't think shame is part of buddhist teaching. However, this kind of techniques quite common across all religious zealots, buddhist or not.

vmfunction··on How I Made Google's "Web" View My Default Search
You can also use https://startpage.com a proxy for google.

Kinda like the DDG -> Bing, StartPage -> google type of deal.

It is with recommended by EFF. Seems like a good way to search google without giving up privacy.

vmfunction··on Show HN: Pls Fix – Hire big tech employees to appeal account suspensions
With corporatism and capitalism, m

maximizing revenue != maximizing benefit for customer and/or society

Corporations' business model have not being long term sustainable, most of them have being off setting the hidden cost to environment, tax payers and general public for quite sometimes. Not event sure they can actually delighting users and make money at the same time.

vmfunction··on GPT-4o
Many business doesn't want to send their data to a third party such as OpenAI, so until locally run LLM becomes wildly available in businesses.
vmfunction··on Telegram has launched a pretty intense campaign to malign Signal as insecure
Would make more sense if it is reproducible builds. Shouldn't we just all switch to matrix clients which use Olm and Megolm cryptographic ratchets and it doesn't rely on one server/one entity.

And looks like it is implemented in Rust:

vmfunction··on Show HN: Convert your Containerfile to a bootable OS
so it is only bootc-enabled container https://centos.github.io/centos-bootc/

So only CentOS? Would it be possible to run that with firecracker? If that is the case, then wouldn't it be better to just run a Docker/container file in a firecracker vm. It will be more isolation, and easier scripting and networking?

vmfunction··on BlackHole: macOS Audio Loopback Driver
Hmm on first look, it looks like Audio MIDI Setup App [1].

Then again it looks like patch bay. Then isn't there already: QjackCtl, and that works with mac/win/linux?

vmfunction··on Why We Hate Working for Big Companies (2018)
It is important to disguise between:

1. capitalism as a form of free market. 2. capitalism as a form of corporatism, the kind that practiced by German conglomerates before and after the WWII.

We can argue that 1 has never being tried any where. As markets are never really free currently.

Number 2 is what the author and most people who don't like about capitalism. It is a form of authoritarianism rather than capitalism, just as how Soviet and China pretend to be communist while they were just practicing authoritarianism.

vmfunction··on JSR Is Not Another Package Manager
>Gotta admit, I'd like to see a more decentralized approach become popular here. There's no specific reason packages always have to be hosted in one or two central registries.

That is what ESM is. Each https link are basically decentralised registries.

vmfunction··on How the Food Industry Pays Influencers to Shill Blueberries, Butter, and More
this is nothing new. Companies have being paying models to go to bars and tourist site and use their products.

Pharmaceutical companies have paid doctors (in hotels, spas and what not) to prescribe their pipeline medications to patients. Then US government passed a law to make it illegal for pharmas to do that. It just spawned some 'medical education' company that is hired by the big pharams to do it on their behave.

Consumer capitalism is kinda like democracy. The consumer/voter need to be well informed/educated, and information needs to be 100% transparent.

vmfunction··on Ask HN: What software sparks joy when using?
Beautiful Dorena, but doesn't run on new mac os any more.
vmfunction··on HonoJS: Small, simple, and ultrafast web framework for the Edges
this is kinda lib we need! Not something specifically coded for a runtime, rather adhered to the Web Standard.
vmfunction··on BTFS: BitTorrent Filesystem
>A prominent direction in the Linux distribution scene lately has been the concept of immutable desktop operating systems. Recent examples include Fedora Silverblue (2018) and Vanilla OS (2022). But, on my anecdotal understanding of the timelines concerning Linux distros, both are spiritual successors to CoreOS (2013).

Remember in the late 90's booting server off a CD-ROM was the thing.

vmfunction··on AI-generated sad girl with piano performs the text of the MIT License
This is the thing. Live performance is always gonna be different than something from pre-recorded or AI generated. That's why music lovers like to go to live concerts and performances.
