vln··on I started programming when I was 7. I'm 50 now and the thing I loved has changed
The thing I loved has changed.

And I fell in love with it again. I'm learning how to work in this new world and it's fun as hell.

vln··on Ask HN: How to talk with logical flow and coherence at interviews?
One thing I do to give myself time to think is to just rephrase the question as a way to ensure I understood correctly as well as demonstrating that you're listening and participating. I then ask clarifying questions and ask for them to confirm any assumptions I'm making based upon answers given as part of my thought process. It's just thinking out loud and can also help demonstrate _how_ you think about problems. This lays the groundwork for you to construct a cohesive narrative.
vln··on Changing jobs during the Great Resignation
I think it's because he's on the eng management track. I don't think they're asking hard leetcode questions.
vln··on Show HN: Flight Penguin – Like Hipmunk, but a browser extension
They intend to make money selling your data.

> Monetize without ads: As a browser extension, we can focus on monetizing free users by selling information about user's search intent.

vln··on Facebook whistleblower says she wants to fix company, not harm it
I said the same thing. It's how I rationalized selling out for a company that does harm to the world.
vln··on Apple's Power Move to Kneecap Facebook Advertising Is Working
Yeah, I opt out by default.
vln··on AMA with Substack and Matt Taibbi about a new business model for journalism
Can't readers just unsubscribe if they disagree with whatever the writer is saying? This just changes who pays the bills. Ultimately, I think the writer will cater to their audience with subscriptions being a far stronger signal than clicks. I don't see how this is better for Democracy, but I'd love to be proved wrong. We need better access to better news, not more paywalls.
vln··on The assault on neurosurgeons’ privileges by software and bureaucrats
I did some time at a healthcare IT startup and had to suffer through some Epic training. It's terrible. But so is most health software.
vln··on I quit working full-time years ago–here’s why I recommend it highly
These are radical ideas. I would like to subscribe to your newsletter.
vln··on Build Apps for Cars on the New Automatic Developer Platform
I actually participated in the program a couple of years ago. You used it for 6 months and it monitored your driving looking for things like rapid acceleration/deceleration -- I assume that's what leads to most accidents. It also tracked time of day as an indicator of how risky you are to insure. When I used it, it was only used to discount your insurance if you were a good driver by their metrics, not increase any premiums.
vln··on A note from Keith
Was he openly gay/bi? I could see him not wanting to disclose a same sex relationship and outing himself.
vln··on Introducing Humble Indie Bundle 7 (with Legends of Grimrock and more)
I just bought Shank 2 yesterday. Darn.
vln··on Ask HN: Do you care about your digital footprint? Why/why not?
I've basically locked down my Facebook to where no one can see any tagged photos of me. I don't fill out any of my interests/hobbies and I limit who I add as a friend.

Google has me by the balls though. I'm sure they know me better than any other person alive through my searches, email, and google reader subscriptions.

I don't like it, but I'm also not overly concerned since I'm not doing anything to get me into any sort of trouble.

vln··on Why do I keep coming back to the Nexus S?
I'm still using my original Palm Pre because I find the other mobile OSes lacking. Sadly, I'll probably make the move to Android soon since the Palm hardware is falling apart.
vln··on Ask HN: Help, my $150,000 student debt is ruining my life, and my future
Look up the College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007. After 10 years of working in public service where you have made 120 payments toward the loan, they will discharge the rest of it. There's always the military.

vln··on Show HN: NationBuilder, my startup just launched
I also like the idea and agree with you on the name. From the US point of view, when I hear nation building, I think of the conflicts in Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, etc.

I also don't see how the name relates to non profits.

vln··on Photos Too Racy for Facebook? Put Them in the Fridge (YC S10)
> Also facebook album with proper privacy settings is much better option.

I think this is superior due to the simplicity of the privacy settings.

The main benefit I see is for events and occasions where multiple people want to share photos. They can all be uploaded to a single location/group rather than spread out among several different facebook albums. In addition, only the users within the group can view them. You could be diligent in the privacy settings for the photos you upload yourself, but your friend might not be and the photos could still be viewed by mutual acquaintances.

vln··on Google is eating Microsoft’s lunch, one tasty bite at a time
I don't see Google Spreadsheet eating Excel's lunch anytime soon.
