vletal··on What Oxford taught me about posh people
#5 - I think that grading is not a good feedback for many disadvantaged kids and their parents. I was being told that without good grades I will not land a good job. This kind of advice is worthless for a 12yo and not really true. Having a good attitude towards learning is an universally more applicable and could lead to a thriving society when applied generally.
vletal··on What Oxford taught me about posh people
My life goal was to attend one of these elite universities. I desired to work at companies such as Google or Apple.

After graduating from the Czech Technical University I realized that

1. I am much less special then I thought

2. There is much more hard working focused average people then the few talented superstars, both usually achieving the same

3. Surprisingly many of the exceptionally smart people in my social bubble, some of them graduated from the best universities in the world, "left the system" and focus on doing creative small thing's in their everyday life, instead of pursuing their parents dreams

4. Work, life, and social structure is extremely unfair

5. I will do my best to teach my kinds to strive for understanding, a love for beauty and a complexity of the world, instead of focusing on grades and stuff

6. The two guys I knew, who attended Oxf. and Camb. were both fired because they were more talk then action. Not a representative sample though. Just ruining my illusion.

TBH I'd rather die happy around the age of 75 than miserable at 90+ like my grandparents.

Not everyone has the luck of being cared of as British Queen and Prince were, yet they seem to die anyway.

So what does it do? Is it just about the daily ping?
vletal··on Kickstarting AI for Code: Introducing IBM’s Project CodeNet
I am really interested in applicability of models trained on this specific dataset. For sure I know that if I'd encounter an "algorithmic competition" style code in a PR I'd hardly ever accept it.
vletal··on Mark Zuckerberg, Let Me Pay for Facebook (2015)
Is not the fight against being tracked outside of the social media using? Like using snippets on 3th party websites etc.

Recently I'm having really bad experience with ads and sponsored content FB and YT. Ranging from repetitive stuff to outright scams. WTF? I'd pay for not being served that content.

vletal··on Mark Zuckerberg, Let Me Pay for Facebook (2015)
After reading the rumor that Twitter is going to provide a subscription option I googled this very phrase and found this opinion article, which is as relevant as it was 5y ago.

I hope that the anti tracking movement will give me an option to pay for the "free" services which I use.

vletal··on Modern Javascript: Everything you missed over the last 10 years (2020)
I can imagine that the original argument does not apply to the languages which compile to JS. But IMO the fact that there is so many derived languages covering the mess which JS is only supports the argument against it.
vletal··on Vaccinated Americans now may go without masks in most places, the CDC said
Is not the US education system very ideological?

Among the US citizens (mostly LA area) which I know it was not uncommon to hear how they "love America", similarly to how Christian believers "love Jesus".

Moreover from what I understand the local historical textbooks are censoring displeasing moments from the time of oppression of the black community.

I'm far from an anarchist yet I would take my kids out of the system if I found a meaningful alternative which would not cost a fortune.

vletal··on What Happens to Stocks and Cryptocurrencies When the Fed Stops Raining Money?
Even if that was the case the hyperboly is put in a way that it's undermining the greater point.

I felt like accepting your rightish narrative and then you drop this asocial bomb?

vletal··on Over 96% of Apple Users Have Blocked Facebook from Tracking Them
Granularity of several hundred is actually fine grained enough for it to be worth spending while targeting an individual. Remember the case where the guy tried to pin point a CEO of a company to catch his attention.

Long story short: Apache Arrow defines a format for (tabular) data to allow efficient computation and easier interop and sharing data between different frameworks.

Well, some of these attacks exploit the actual values present in the memory, not their stored representations. Therefore it would not matter how you encode them on the way, right?

vletal··on Dear Zuckerberg, We're writing to urge you to cancel Instagram for children [pdf]
You sure that your "we do not need governments to babysit us" ideology goes well with the rest of the tread you seemingly agree with?
vletal··on Dear Zuckerberg, We're writing to urge you to cancel Instagram for children [pdf]
Ah. Ok. Here in Czechia we get partial responsibility at the age of 15...
vletal··on Dear Zuckerberg, We're writing to urge you to cancel Instagram for children [pdf]
How did they come up with 13yo as the minimal age btw. Is it set globally? I feel like it's itself too low.
vletal··on Dear Zuckerberg, We're writing to urge you to cancel Instagram for children [pdf]
I was actually asking an honest question. I do not think I'm giving up on my responsibilities. It's just that does serving as a proxy to YouTube really help better than some reasonable weekly limit?
vletal··on Dear Zuckerberg, We're writing to urge you to cancel Instagram for children [pdf]
FOMO? Potential social isolation?

I have just a 2yo and a t-6m so I do not have to worry about these things. Yet the way you handle it sounds a bit too strict. You sure that maybe strict limits on screen time and YouTube together with speaking about what they consume would not teach them more?

vletal··on Dear Zuckerberg, We're writing to urge you to cancel Instagram for children [pdf]
More of a "free" like in "you are free to behave immorally"
vletal··on Dear Zuckerberg, We're writing to urge you to cancel Instagram for children [pdf]
"free" like in the "regulations are harmful" way?
vletal··on The Daily Standup Is a Waste of Time
After reading the negative comments I feel like a misfit. We have two standups a day and it has been great so far. After a year into this social appocalipse I am just happy to see faces. We do not have any issues with severe noise or hardware though.

For the usual noise, like keyboard, Krisp [1] has been a pleasure to use (beware, shameless referal link plug)!

vletal··on Mathematicians find a new class of digitally delicate primes
That is wierd. Base k includes numbers 0,...,k-1. For example 101 is a valid number in base 2 which is 2^2 + 2^1.

Using that logic, base 1 would only contain 0, hence it should not be able to expresss more values that 0.

Is your example actually a valid base 1?

vletal··on Show HN: My personal website is a shell
Such a great idea! I'd personally consider using busybox in WASM instead of reimplementing a shell. Quick Google search found [1]. Have you considered that?

[1] https://tbfleming.github.io/em-shell/

vletal··on Mathematicians find a new class of digitally delicate primes
Nice corner case. It's pretty much useless, it would contain just a single value. Is it even valid base?
vletal··on Apple doesn't care about album cover art
Such a close minded harsh thing to say.
vletal··on Wezterm – A GPU-accelerated cross-platform terminal emulator and multiplexer
I've just tried it on 2014 MacBook Pro with Intel Iris GPU. It seems it bit more sluggish than the built in Terminal app.

No hard numbers, yet simply resizing a window is visibly slow or "accidentally" catting 100k line txt file in the terminal takes several seconds. Both is instant in iTerm and Terminal on my machine.
