One thing which I miss on RPis, especially these tiny ones, is a tty exposed via the charging USB.

> Grid view shows people on your FaceTime call in the same‑size tiles, so you can have better conversations with a large group. The speaker is automatically highlighted so you always know who’s talking.

Is none at Apple actually using FaceTime? I remember seeing group FaceTime for the first time approx a year ago. It looked like a 90' screen saver. I was completely astonished. Like 10 years ago was late for this kind of update.

vletal··on To learn a new language, read its standard library
I'd go even further. As long as you want to communicate your ideas via code it does not matter whether you work with juniors or seniors. You want to limit the cognitive strain caused by unnecessarily complicated code.
vletal··on To learn a new language, read its standard library
Take Scala collections. These are written using builders and if-else checks of emptiness which are definitely not idiomatic. Authors of the std-lib did them for you so you do not have to. That is not a red flag.
vletal··on To learn a new language, read its standard library
Or it even uses patterns which would be considered anti patterns outside of it for the sake of optimizations.
vletal··on New language features since Java 8 to 17
There is still a huge market demand for Java. Moreover the recent releases are doing a great job adding features following recent trends. If thought using JDK 16+ a student will be able to move to Kotlin, Swift, Scala, ... much more easily than few years ago. IMO it's more about updating the curricula than dropping Java.

> provided by IBM in June 2011

In Czechia we have a system where all sellers have to log bills to prevent tax evasion. IBM also provided the system. It cost ~ 15m$ to set up and ~15m$/y to run.

Given the rate of ~millions of bills submitted per day, of which the government only gets the total price and taxes, you have like ~hundred bills per second.

I could scale a gunicorn+sqlite on my 2014 MacBook Pro to be able to receive this rate of requests with a payload which could fit inside a single TCP packet. Sure, there is auth/backups/analytics... etc. Yet, I still just do not see how could IBM charge the extra 14m$ to set that up...

Come on! 140W adapter? I thought that the efficient M1 design will allow us to return to the 80W range for the 16".

vletal··on Create and share images of your source code
Well you definitely can prune the font to ASCII. Enything outside of that can be exported as vector graphics. That would shave off plenty of space.

OT: I thought that I would not see this in mid-2021.

vletal··on New features coming in Julia 1.7
Exactly. We are training a very large neural model using [1]. We would not fix much if we decided to embed the Julia code inside a CPython wrapper or something...

vletal··on Asahi Linux for M1 Macs: progress report for September 2021
Observing the achievements of this group of young talented devs only increases my imposter syndrome.

Awesome job, love the enthusiasm.

vletal··on New features coming in Julia 1.7
Are these really the pain points of the language needed to be addressed? What kills me specifically is the fact how sloooow are the initial warm-ups. I am forced to write a webserver in Julia. The startup time is ~5min and each initial request takes like 45s. The lengths I needed to go and the hacks I needed to do to reduce that are mesmerising.

Faster log10 is all nice but I would love to see a more aggressive compilation cache and improved tooling rather than these minor improvements.

vletal··on Sustainable coffee grown in Finland with cellular agriculture
I would guess that it depends on the final product. This works for coffee because it gets grinded to a fine powder. Cocoa might work as well, tobacco for e-smokig, etc.
vletal··on The First Rule of Machine Learning: Start Without Machine Learning
In the business and corporate world this is so underrated.

In the past I attended several meetings with customers where I was actively discouraged asking questions which would help us deliver a good meaningful solution as long as the customer would be happy "investing in a ML solution". And they were...

Faking interest sounds like a great tactic! Is there a book about these? I suspect marketing graduates should learn these tactics during their studies.
vletal··on The Beginner's Computer Handbook (1983)
I remember being completely immersed by the book in the early 90'. I wrote my first working program before learning how to read properly based on the book.

What are the alternatives for contemporary languages nowadays? I have small kids and BASIC got obsolete since then :)

vletal··on Bare metal Apple M1 Debian at 4K 60
I'm curious about the power efficiency. From all my experience, all laptops I had usually drained battery much faster on Linux than on Windows. And these were very standard mainstream machines. M1 is a proprietary CPU which requires reverse engineering to even make OS running. I wonder how close to "native" is the Linux going to get.
